  • Islander, in reply to David Hood,

I love hoiho - but am a bit distressed at how that bird's eye-band is depicted (it is a slightly lighter yellow - but v. definitely yellow...seen hundreds of them on the family kaik' beach at Moeraki-)

Poetry on the street. Saw an old guy writing stuff in chalk on the footpath on my way home, then saw completed poems. Not sure if it was the same guy, didn’t hang around to chat, being so outgoing and sociable, just snapped a few pics on the cellphone. First two poems by Mao Zedong, third by Guo Moruo, so of dubious artistic merit…. still better than no poetry on the street, though.

Not quite art, not quite on the street.... elephant statue and UFO... erm... 2008 Olympic badminton gymnasium, still with the 2008 Olympic signs on it.

More utility boxes, this by Albert Park, seems to be ‘adopted by the (nearby) Hemp Store’.

爱国 (àiguó, patriotism), 创新 (chuàngxīn, innovation), 包容 (bāoróng, tolerance), 厚德 (hòudé, virtue (but actually, 厚德 isn't in any of my dictionaries)), and in the square at bottom right, 北京精神 (Běijīng jīngshén, the spirit of Beijing).

Still sloganeering after all these years.

Dawn, pagoda, Peking University campus this morning.

Fat boy, round the back of the PKU School of Government building (why I chose the Art on the Street thread, but I promptly forgot as soon as I went to upload photos).

Dawn light, reflected twice to hit the back of the School of Government's old building*, School's new building looming over it doing what it can to keep the old building dark and cold.

*not the old School of Government building, but an old building with their name on it. By the look of the old building, when it was built, PKU was located in the Red Building in the centre of Beijing near the National Art Gallery.

Am I imagining it, or is the only non-brown part of him the tip of his penis? Is that deliberate, from wear, or vandalism?

I can think of several possibilities. One is the combination of my crappy cellphone and the reflected at least twice dawn light on the last clean air day before that wave of apocalyptic pollution made it up to the northwest of Beijing. Wear, though, strikes me as the most likely possibility. It is, after all, on a university campus. Plenty of young people about.

Antidote - perhaps with greater claim to be art, certainly it's on the street.
I met this couple of colourful characters outside the Gisborne Contract Bridge Club.

Wider shot reveals the secret of their cheerfulness despite being out in the midday sun on one of the particularly warm days a week ago.

A fertility symbol that might actually work. If young people are hanging around the guy suggestively touching his penis, they might hook up with each other.
