  • ChrisW, in reply to Jos,

    Loud conversation at Ohope beach.
And the eyes of a stink bug

    Very striking!
In their own ways, both seem to be singing "It ain't easy being green"

    Walking the dog.
Could be a black dog, but against the rising sun, how could you tell?

    Maukatia (Maori Bay) last night.

Surfers were looking photogenic in the sunset.

This is grainy, and at the very limit of my G9's capabilities at maximum ISO, maximum aperture, maximum time, but. My first aurora!!!

Another lovely thing here on my coast south of Dunedin!

To the naked eye the glow is faint, dimmer than the stars, and only subtly greenish. But the just-perceptible shimmers and flashes and changes of shape are magical. Thank you Hebe, for telling me to go look!

    Green – with envy…
One day I’ll get to see one…

    When was this event ?
Was it part of the one on April 25 that took out most high frequency radio and shortwave for an hour or more?

see: here – I know it’s the Huffington Post but they do aggregate well ;- )

You can get aurora alerts from http://www.spaceweather.com/}Spaceweather
and from the Space Weather Prediction Center (sic)

    Pakiri beach

I really liked Pakiri beach, we stayed at the motor camp in a unit right on the edge of the beach - very relaxing place to be... especially after seeing The Clean at Leigh Sawmill the night before going there - double happy!

That lovely Land-ness monster also looks like a waka or viking longship wreck to me...

Brilliant, reminds me of the one and only Green Flash experience I had. Blink and you'll miss that : )

    My first aurora!!!

Great capture Lilith! I had an intuition when the aurora alerts fired up last night that I shd let you know. There are pages on Facebook -- which seem to be based in the south with people aurora-hunting, watching and photographing. Keep an eye on spaceweather.com for the NZ map kp readings: above 4 and you're in with a chance apparently.

    Last night, Ian!
Our first clear night for a while. The stars were brilliant. It was very cold, but worth it. :-)
