  • Jackie Clark, in reply to Gareth,

We have no dishwasher. We have the dog, followed by hot water and detergent. She is the best cleaner upper of roast/baking dishes ever.

  • Hebe, in reply to Gareth,

So they are labradors with a high IQ? Meh. I had thought we could have a beagle next time instead of the serial black labs to get away from food-focused dogs. Perhaps beloved is right: he mourns his huntaway and wants another.

I found the lab a huge aid when dealing with young twins -- more for the floor than the plates and faces before you call CYPFs.

I'm one of those really horrendo people that thinks dogs have very clean mouths. Which is helpful when you have a girl who would bathe my face with her tongue, if I let her. As it is, I let her have a good old licking and then, enough!

Stella comes up behind and does a gentle lick of the back of the knee and if seated she will go for your elbow. I give her raw hide munchies as her teeth cleaner and her teeth have stayed relatively good for an old girl. Having lost the front teeth in her childhood accident, I suspect it caused her to be rather gentle with food and licks. :)

And then we have Amercian (sic) Presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney treating his Dog like luggage
You can tell a lot about someone's character by the way they treat animals.

This is the gorgeous Georgia (Georgie) who is dangerously close to converting this cat-lover. She belongs to my sister and her partner - they have a wee maltese cross called Pipi too who is delightful - but Georgie's beautiful. She's in bed with Zoe, a practise which now takes place every time they come for dinner. She starts lurking in Zoe's room as soon as she sees the pjs go on. Felix has moved onto the bottom bunk with the express intent of luring her into his bed. She is a visitor, but much loved. Perhaps being the dog of a much-loved aunty helps?

and as you can see I'm swayed enough to let her bony old greyhound body get up on the couch next to me.

  • Jackie Clark, in reply to Kate Hannah,

I think greyhounds are possibly the most lovely dogs I have ever met. I really want one in my life, before I die.

    More? I wrote the book!

I'm reading your book!! This is where we point out again how small NZ is. Had some ideas about truffles and our research and so grabbed some books, yours being one of them. Only problem is it takes years to do the experiments :(.

  • Gareth, in reply to Bart Janssen,

...and only minutes to eat the results. ;-)

But seriously: when we planted our first truffle (T melanosporum) trees we were told it would take anywhere between 5 and 15 years to get production, so when we got our first truffle after 9 years we thought we'd done well. Nowadays, it would be normal to get production in 5-7 years. Not for the impatient, still...

  • Bart Janssen, in reply to Gareth,

Lucky you had a vineyard to tide you over then :).

The main interest is we think we might be able to shorten the time it takes to establish an interaction. But even so not a quick experiment and you kinda need a bit of land to play on :). Maybe a retirement project.

  • Kate Hannah, in reply to Jackie Clark,

They really are delightful Jacqui - she's got a fab personality, good with all sizes of kids, is super toasty warm as they have very fast metabolisms, and you're allowed to feed them treats as they need fattening up! good walker and a real point of conversation - noone can ever go past without a comment. She likes to lean heavily against my legs when I'm in the kitchen and look up at me with her beautiful aristocratic face .... poor Pipi the maltese however is getting fat and is on diet - she feels very hard done by. The kids like to dress up both of them in dolls' clothes. They accept this torment with grace. Good dogs.

Not the best photo, but this Puppy and Tellus. Puppy, the darling white boxer, was deaf and partially blind and epileptic. She lived for five incredible years, was gentle and loving, and taught me to love dogs. She was the kind of dog that you used to teach kids how to approach dogs, because no matter how badly they did it, she'd still just drool on them and like their faces. It didn't hurt that she only had baby teeth.

And Tellus - a huntaway-rotty cross. Gorgeous, kind, dependable, cuddly and strong. With the most expressive eyebrows I have ever seen. She is my ex's dog, so I don't see her anymore.

I miss them both so, so much.

Oh JoJo. That made me cry. Puppy reminds me so much of a member of our dogpack, Feeney, who was also a white boxer and also deaf. She also died when she was 5 of heart failure. Her brother, Falco, lives on and is doing well. Sweet sweet dogs.

  • JoJo,

Sorry for making you cry, Jackie - although the nine pages of dog photos already had me leaking a little bit, so typing that about Puppy and Tellus finished me off.

If by chance you are on Facebook, do check out https://www.facebook.com/spike.nicholls

Spike is a mischievous deaf boxer, whose behaviour is so like Puppy's it feels like she's still close. Except I don't have to clean up the chaos!

It's alright, JoJo. We've had a lot of our old dog pack die lately - Ruby and I are off to a memorial morning tea for our dear Byron tomorrow in fact - so I've been dogweepy all week anyway.
