    I don’t like most eq-representation art but that’s good.

It is a piece at least 6 years old. Cant remember when I took that photo, but I took this in it's new home today.. The cracks represent a number of things for me.

I’m not sure if we should post pics ourselves but, what the hey…

Last I looked, it's still a photo blog.

Anyway, surely safer than pictures of dignitaries and the constabulary. ;-)

It interests me not just a little bit how images can carry more significance and power than words sometimes, and as a result be more challenging. Well, I've found that to be the case, but YMMV.

Glad you made the effort Gudrun, and pleased to have given them a context.

The woman next to Parkup is his deputy isn't it?

No, while she bears a passing resemblance to Councillor & Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button, it's not her.

There was an interesting case in point a while back, where Ben Wilson posted a pic here of the thinly-patronised overflow RWC wharf when it was a big issue. Danyl Mclauchlan reposted it uncredited at The DimPost which generated a long discussion thread, but no-one bothered to credit or directly acknowledge the picture (well I did, and Ben was more than modest in response). Yet without that one bit of newsgathering the discussion thread was pretty much an online version of talkback radio,

  • JacksonP,

The one that gets me every time (and yes, I am mildly obsessed by it) is Emma’s Snow Dalek.

Screw you earthquake and weather apocalypse, I’m making a Snow Dalek!

I am in awe of this sort of human spirit in the face of adversity, and the photo says it way better than words ever could, IMhO.

    Ok ok, I’ll move on.

There were at least a couple of snow-dalek attempts in my street (not by me, incidentally!) at that time, maybe it's a thing? But none of them were in the same league as Emma's.

This is a really good point, thanks Joe (and Ben!).

Plus I find my new interest in wildlife says words that don't exist to me .
This shot I took yesterday made me think of Islander immediately. Her love of birdlife and my desire to see an interaction from them relatable to human interaction, which is,
one is stuck on the ground while the other flies high. The glance up is my moment of satisfaction. Shot grabbed

Thank you. That means I am getting there huh? It is ridiculous how happy I get when I just know the shot has been achieved. As an aside ,these welcome swallows (named via and because of the PAS crew) are so fast it feels like it is very difficult to catch them in flight so that shot was special for me. :))

Kamakura Temple. South of Tokyo 1991.

When I think of remembrance, and symbols of grief, I often think of the temples in Kamakura, where I found myself in 1991. My grandfather had just passed away back in New Zealand, and I couldn't make it back for the funeral, so spent the day here instead.

Guess this constitutes a thread jack, but oh well. I blame the fever from my head cold.

Thank you. That means I am getting there huh?

Might need a few more, before we know for sure. Lovely shot Sofie. ;-)

That was certainly the case for the first few months of the central city red zone, where even the Press was excluded, and a North Island photographer was given exclusive CERA-sanctioned access to create an 'official' record.

It's not often that media photography becomes a political issue in NZ, but eventually the Press threw their weight behind their people and gave one of their more articulate snappers an op-ed piece to protest the media's rights. Shortly afterwards the restrictions were relaxed. Interestingly enough, on the day that CERA excluded the media from the red zone, the Press ran an uncritical puff piece on the CERA-sanctioned photographer. One of their own people even took a lovely shot of him all kitted out and grinning.
