Hebe, Melbourne is fantastic minus the weather. I lived there for three years, adored everything, except the weather.

What is a good time of year to visit? My impression is of a bigger, more sophisticated Wellington with a funky edge.

Spot on, and with lashings of European styling. It probably don't matter too much if you're just visiting... hotels, lane ways, funky bars, holes in the wall, tram rides, galleries, shopping, fantastic food... who cares about the weather. It's that four seasons in?

Ok if we?re doing trains, here?s one. The Weka Pass Railway, which runs steam-train excursions twice a month from Waipara. It?s great fun, particularly if you are accompanied by anklebiters. There?s an open car at the back if you can handle the steam and smut. ;-)

Have some photos of a steam train going up to Arthur?s Pass somewhere. But negatives, so the train meme might require some planning. Will do it at some stage though, as love the trains.

We went to the Hunter Valley Steamfest 2012 at Maitland last month expecting to hang with the engines. Got torrential downpours instead. Better luck next year.

BTW Ted Hughes' collection from which this comes, Moon Whales, is IMO one of his very best. It's supposedly for children, which I think is just an excuse to be whimsical and hilarious. It's out of print but can be obtained from libraries or?

This is forcing me to look again at some of my photos from the last visit. Took a bit of tweaking to get the lattice work out of the shell, but kinda works.

The camera policy in the MCA is interesting. They simply said 'no flash'. Every one I saw was taking photos with varying quality of phones and cameras.
