  • Rob Stowell, in reply to Gudrun Gisela,

@Gudrun, yikebike were on Montreal St when I visited a year or so ago. Between Brougham and Moorhouse, but I can’t remember the exact address.
The one I saw was a bit noisy too. Not dreadful, I didn’t think, but not electric car silent, for sure. I think it’s claimed to be deliberate, so people can hear you coming. Not sure I believe this…
Some thoughtful design gone into them, but I don’t know anyone who owns or has used one extensively. There’ll be more on the yikebike blog.

ETA: local contact from website is:
    YikeBike Ltd

    Maria Kay

    77 Montreal St
    Christchurch 8023
    New Zealand

    Telephone: +64 3 669 24 01

(I'm definitely not trying to sell them! I just think they look fun and practical, and like that they're a local business.)

Well about 3hrs 45mins of continuous Floyd and our Morepork friend (of which there is 4 at the mo) stayed the entire evening. One seems to hang out when the music is on. I am so pleased I can almost touch it from our flash new deck. We shone a torch to find him before we snapped :)

  • BenWilson, in reply to Gudrun Gisela,

interesting contributions fron Stephanie & Ben Wilson.

Note that mine are based on el-cheapo second hand bikes. Newer and/or more expensive ones are a different experience, range and effort-wise. I never paid more than $300, but if you drop $1500 you'll get a different class of bike. Spend $5000 and it's something else again.

Mind you, in Christchurch, an unmotored pushbike is a pretty good option if you want to go slower?

    Held Hostage by Caterpillars

I wake up and the plants are stalks
No time today for Sunday walks.
I have to rush to King's Plant Barn
In case my caterpillars come to harm.
Help! I gasp as I reach the door.
Swan plants, swan plants, I need some more!

  • Sofie Bribiesca, in reply to Cecelia,

Not sure but last year it was inundated with Manuka honey bees and so far this year I am seeing many Monarch butterflys of which there were none before. So maybe they have binan'gone. Short of time to study that at the mo.The tree stands at about 2 metres now.

I think it’s claimed to be deliberate, so people can hear you coming.

Might even be a legal requirement in some countries by now. Too many blind pedestrians getting run over by Priuses.
