    Virginia creeper

I thought Virginia creeper in Jos' picture - though now that I check in a gardening book I find that what I thought of as Virginia creeper is the Boston Creeper and wot Jos shot seems to be Virginia creeper if that makes sense......

In a creepy kind of way. :P

    Love that bus stop photo!

I bet America is reeling. Take care there.

The India garden is nice as well, the modernist bit was looking tired.

Cheers. It's possibly the first time I've seen what seems to be an act of vandalism unintentionally improve the original. Check out the detail on this tree. An artist could have worked that by etching the glass and not come up with much better.

It could just be an accident, a stone thrown by a tire, but if it is vandalism, it would be odd to leave it at merely cracking the glass - unless they saw what I saw, curious random beauty of their own making.

Summer is well and truly done for.
    Yes, it really is.

But it was lovely warm summery weather in the Mangatu valley up in the Gisborne backcountry on Sunday – though admittedly there are some autumnal trees.

    A frame upon the land.

Most of us gazers preferred the view without the frame.

    This grazer too.

These grazers are generally happy to go with the colour and flow of the land. But really, for all that stuff about “following like sheep” and “wake up, you sheeple!” there’s a lot of radical individualism going on here.

After a little indecision and rightist tendencies, the collective made a determined swing to the left and headed for the warm sunlit uplands

    Hard Yakka

Not really the thread for this, but I clean forgot I took it. How work has changed in 30 years.

Yes, and very clever to match your grey-scale photo with a grey-scale caption of exactly corresponding length so it looks like part of the fine artwork!

On the other hand, what happened to your full-on big-file photos?

These are phone cam shots...quality is not great, and getting worse, the lens is getting more scratched and blurry every day. But it's the camera I'm always carrying.

    The eyes have it.

A kereru visiting my place is a rarity. This one perched on the walnut tree the other day seems to convey a message this morning – no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should, all’s well with the world.

That raised toe in particular, corresponding to raised forefinger from the steering wheel - an acknowledgement from provincial-rural NZ.

Lovely combination of the regular geometry and the organic. Maybe my tired eyes exaggerate the movement but those fiddle scrolls seem to be rolling and unrolling - won't quite stand still ...

Great photo - where is it? It reminds me a little of various Muslim palaces in Spain.

One from early in the summer, before the fire ban kicked in. Testing my rocket stove. Hot, thirsty work :-)

  • BenWilson,

The ultimate plan with this setup is actually to use it to make biochar, a summer project I had planned, that got completely fuxored by the drought. I wanted a fire hot enough that it makes no smoke. Which this did admirably within about 30 seconds of lighting it, as I forced it with a hand held fan. The char itself is made in a big tin on top, with small holes to let out the wood-gas (which also burns smokeless). On top of that, the grill, on which I cook stuff. The char goes on the garden, to make terra preta. That's the plan, we'll see how it goes during the next week of holidays.

Sequestering your own carbon! How awesome. :-)

  • BenWilson, in reply to Lilith __,

:-) I've certainly got plenty of biomass to get rid of. TBH, my motivation is not really about sequestration, it's about getting space back from various woodpiles that are taking forever to compost, whilst generating a useful byproduct, and an interesting experiment, without annoying the shit out of the neighbors or getting a visit from the council, or spending money. I don't have an indoor fireplace. It's a pity about the wasted heat energy - cooking is the only real use I can find for it. If anyone can think of a way to turn a bunch of excess heat on a small scale into something useful, let me know :-)

Cat attractor? Heated bricks as warmed cat seats?
Would save getting scratches on the car bonnet....

Interesting you should say that. I found this cat laying against it the next morning, and many times since. Intermittent reward is really powerful on cats.

Hasn’t been very summery today, what with a high of 8 (after really nice days earlier this week), but whatever…. only 2, but she already takes care of her own vaccination records.

And is busy reading up on how to stay healthy.
