Hi Jackson, we are all over the show like a mad woman’s …. I think I am around for only 3 days but not sure as I am back up north by Friday. This and next. We are a bit exhausted and birthdays in the near future and funeral past has made us a bit busier. If I venture out I will yell out, if not ,next time fer sure.
I think the message today could be KIA KAHA!
Oh Jackson, I'm sure you met Graham at our gatherings. His charming wife who is in Archives. The masterful magical Graham. A gem of an English man was he. :)

Yes, I think I did. We’ve had a lot going on too, which is why I’d love to catch up. Summer will bring more opportunities.

    Arohanui, and take care.

Hello Jos, your car photo made me laugh. Your personalised name pic juxtaposed with the little car, and I imagine you in it!

What a nice bit of sculpture. While I'm no expert that looks like one of the rarer Fun Hos.

In 1976 I bought a Fun Ho twin-engined aeroplane at the New Brighton market. As I'd never seen one like that it caught my fancy. Someone who knew about these things identified it as being finished in RNZAF training colours, while implying that $25 was a bit on the high side. When I put it on TradeMe in 2009, even though it had endured some rough play by a couple of generations of littlies. it ended up paying me 50c for every week I'd owned it.

  • Lilith __,

I was very angry when I read about NZ On Air funding a Wellington crew to make a film about the Chch earthquakes, and I've been reflecting on that anger. And the insider/outsider dynamic.

It's a tough one. There's a strong sense here that only Chch people understand what Chch people have been through. There's also a sense in East Chch that only Easterners understand how bad it's been in the East. And I'm sure in the worst-affected communities there's probably a feeling that no outsider can truly understand the experience.

All of these things are true, up to a point. There's a strong bond we have from shared emotional and life experiences. But I don't think that should blind us to our commonality with others. So many of us have survived horrific traumas of different sorts. No one but you can truly understand what you've been through, but perhaps the more we talk, the more we can appreciate that we're all damaged, all survivors, and that realisation can bring us all closer together.

I know everybody in any way associated with Chch and NZ will have feelings about the Canterbury earthquakes. And everybody has a right to express what they feel, as well as acknowledging other experiences.

As much as I love the feeling of community that's grown here in Chch, I'd rather our community wasn't an exclusive club. We've had such a lot of love and support from elsewhere.

This has been such a big experience, it can seem overwhelming, blotting out anything else. But it's not the whole world. Perhaps, letting other people in is part of letting go of these horrors.

Keep safe, and arohanui to you all.

Well said Lilith. Also a good picture: did you hear the wind before the rain started – it howled like I have not heard before. Big weather too.

More than that, even. I was gobsmacked when the bidding almost immediately went apeshit, and the winner was ever so grateful. There's no way I could have bought the equivalent of a nice little point & shoot AND a juicy stash of art materials for $25 back in 1976.

    - How cynical I have become...
    - How nothing much surprises me anymore...
    - How The Eastern chose the right cardinal...
    - How much the Hope and Wire premise sounds like Treme...

The Leggs crew has been busy with funerals over the last week too.

This cineraria bud held in a raindrop seems to say something about the way the vibrant colour of life continues to shine even in the middle of tears.

O that's hilarious. I think I need one, have done plenty of Photoing on Car myself, as has Sofie from the looks of it.
