  • Chris Waugh,

I had been missing ChrisW's beautiful photographs. Such sad news.

Many thanks to Chris’ family and to Philip Wilkie for posting this here. I was really saddened to hear about Chris’ death, I enjoyed his photos and his comments on those so much. I’ll look through later and mention some of the pictures I loved the most. Best wishes to Chris’ family and friends.

  • Chris Waugh,

I loved Chris' chronicling of the riverbank life. For example. Or this.

Great series of images on those pages. Thanks Chris.

I spent last weekend in Gisborne, which is where Chris lived, and thought I’d post a few from there. I’ve been down that way three times this year, and it is a truly beautiful part of the world.

First three from Anaura Bay, about an hour north of Gisborne.

  • Nora Leggs,

So, these were the first of his pictures I noticed – something about the combination of crisp clear light and the unusual framing…. and the commentary.
    spidery engineering

    and these two

then an endless parade of pictures of the riverbank, the walnut tree, the grapevine, the local bird and rat life.

I'll pick out some more tomorrow.

  • Ian Dalziel,

Very sad to hear of ChrisW's death - his pictures (and comments) here always conveyed a love of, and engagement with, his surroundings, the land, its occupants and the environment.

  • Joe Wylie,

Last time I was at Pt Chevalier Beach, the tide was out, the pohutukawa had finished flowering, the sky was boring - so I had to liven it up a bit.

So sad to know that ChrisW won't be back. Thanks for the great tribute.

  • Hebe,

I am also saddened by ChrisW not being around here, and I have missed him. I loved his river life pictures and many others. Once I got through thinking he was also Chris Waugh, I saw a patient and generous photographer with a love of place and people. He taught me a lot.

I’ve been pretty urban lately, but here’s the United Nations.

You reminded me of the ‘Non-violence’ sculpture outside the UN building.

Photographed here with keen young man in 1993.

  • Lilith __,

I was very sad to hear of ChrisW's passing. I loved his pictures, and particularly his way of always finding new things in his familiar garden and riverbank. Careful observation brings great rewards!

I was staying in downtown Auckland recently and was suffering my usual insomnia. So I spent a lot of time looking out the windows of my hostel, and trying to photograph what I saw.

    Different exposures changed the mood.

I used to live in downtown Chch, which was at that time largely late-19thC brick: soft, elaborate, and gently decaying. This shiny, hard-edged style is probably what central Chch will look like when rebuilt.

I had a splendid morning in the Auckland Botanic Gardens last week and found one of the harakeke bushes had this charming modification.
