  • Joe Wylie, in reply to Lilith __,

Culture vultures in Chch should go visit painter David Woodings at his gallery-studio.

How about that. I remember him - I think it was him - exhibiting at the Denis Cohn Gallery in Darby Street, downstairs from Rip It Up, back at the start of the 80s. He was painting coin op rides back then.

    Home Time

Gudrun, you've caught some great pictures of Show week -- it's so photographed over so many years that it's hard to get a fresh angle, and you have achieved that.

Soon Gudrun. You will be welcome for coffee and cake when after this week (cross fingers) work is done on our house which should bring the kitchen out of the third world into adequate and comfortable: no hole in the floor! Proper benches! A place for the table! And a real laundry! So show week festivities have been off the agenda while we prepare for the building visigoths.

Coffee in Ballantynes this morning and this bird was sharing the crumbs. Later it was swooping and hurtling though the cafe and kitchen shop, not afraid, just having fun flying.

A couple of town, another view opening up. The big building with the broken windows centre left is the fomer Ngai Tahu HQ and the old Reserve Bank building (I always liked that symmetry). The demo on the right is the Holiday Inn. In front is Colombo St/Cashel Mall corner with the empty space being the Triangle Centre. The map is a wee bit dated. Christmas decorations are up and the flowers are making a lovely show.

  • Rob Stowell,

It's weird- I used to know this bloody city! Trying to sort out where and in which direction the photos were taken makes my head spin!
Cheaper than travelling- in a year or two maybe we'll go into town, get lost and enjoy discovering a new city :)

Me too. (Ballantynes is out of picture on the right by my elbow.) That's why I posted: The weirdness of walking around: oh there's the river, there's the Bridge of Remembrance, stomp, stomp, there's Bally's, there's the old DIC/ Bus Exchange entrance. There's ... bloody hell. It's not! And what's the back of that building... High Street is that strip on this side of the diggers; hardly any buildings there.

That's happening to me everywhere. Now things are popping up out of nowhere as well; almost as disconcerting. Visiting the old Spotlight mall in Sydenham (sorry, SoMo) a couple of weeks ago was the reverse.

    shifting spaces…

    That’s happening to me everywhere.

Every building I have ever had an office, studio or worked in, in town (9+) has been demolished now, bar one; the Old Chemistry Building, at the Arts Centre, and who knows what’s happening there…

<edit> make that bar two, I think the old Agfa building may still be standing in Cashel Street (but that was an after school delivery job…)</edit>

...things popping up out of nowhere

…from no where to now here
    with no thing in between
and no particle place to be.

That erasure of personal history is odd: one of mine was on the top floor next to Smiths Bookshop in Manchester St. Now it's shingle, but I still "see" the old place above the chemists and Aji. Is that what it's like to be very old?

Most places in Christchurch I love (the hills, the valleys, the riverbanks, the beaches) are on dodgy land now. Scenic seems to equal unstable; but I’m not going to end up in bishopdale because it is solid. Yuk..

  • Lilith __,

The Chch Public Library announces the new Mobile Library Van service which will replace the Mobile Library Bus which will no longer be used.

They make it sound like an improvement, but the book-carrying capacity less than half that of the bus. And the vans are only available because Rotary kindly donated the money.

Rotary, you folk are wonderful, thank you!!! But why the hell is the CCC not funding us a new bus??

And here in Sumner the van is visiting for fewer hours, and they’ll still be parking it on the fucking Esplanade well away from the village where actual people go.

The librarians are wonderful, but WTF is up with the library management?? How many years do we have to wait for anything resembling a proper library service out here? When will we be told if our library is going to be rebuilt? Why can’t we have a temporary one in a prefab or container?

I’d really like an answer to some of these questions.

Bastards. Small-minded, box-ticking, divorced-from-everyday-life bureaucrats. My MiL will be fuuurious. Lots of old people out there for whom the mobile library is a lifeline; they just don’t go near a library any more, especially now South and the Linwood libraries are closed. And children out there have to go to the central city (or Lyttelton? if it’s open) for the nearest public library. A van is not enough. And don't tell me on-line ordering is a substitute; it's not. Libraries are some people's main social contact of a week.

  • Leigh Russell, in reply to Lilith __,

That the Christchurch City Libraries administration continues to deliver such a vague and unsatisfactory service to the suburbs is really staggering and a cause for intense frustration. What exactly is the matter?! It's not as if what is required is difficult although it may require a significant shift in mind-set about how that service is delivered. As a former community librarian I know exactly the size and shape of the service that isn't being delivered and the article I wrote about it last April hasn't dated much at all. You can find it here: You know you're a librarian when ~ Sumner Library remains closed and you get mad!' And I know it's not just Sumner that is being neglected.

    disaster mismanagement...
Sounds like New Jersey is going the way of New Orleans, post Katrina and Chchch post quakes - forced demolitions and Draconian actions - see this
And FEMA doesn't work in bad weather - of course, brilliant!
How did the world get like this? ...sigh!
