  • Gudrun Gisela,

Deep Red it appears so. Maybe it is a case of not what you know but who you know that is the reason. If you think right now the person, Doug Martin Crown Manager in charge of building consents, installed by central government, has no structural or geotechnical engineering experience but there he is , going to call the shots . How does that make sense? We have post graduates at our universities who would be able to do the very job and would be qualified to work for a fraction of the cost and with a lot more technical background. Why do we put up with bureaucrats making decisions that can potentially cost lives?

6.5 quake in the Wellington/Marlborough region? is ok?

  • Ross Mason,

Yeah it's our turn. But given the lack of posters here it probably means it's "only Wellington". :-)

It was a good shake. Was in Silverstream's "new" New World and the shelves lost a few items onto the floor.

But not much more....for the moment...

    Edit.....5 minutes later

Just watching a news bulletin on TV3. Seems a few buildings likely to be looked at a bit closer. One hotel (Mercure) is being evacuated. Some apartments are being checked as well. Water main has been broke. Part of the container port has sunk ad took a container into the sea. Picture of a library somewhere with books all over the floor.

TV1 bulletin says Seddon has a house that is damaged.

Our "damage" was a toy motorcycle falling off the shelf......catastrophic.....

  • Chris Waugh,

Huh. Just as I saw the news, my internet connection crapped out, and I wound up trying the cellphone, which is usually painfully slow. It managed to provide me with the information I was looking for, but now I see it randomly chopped a few words from my comment. Oh well.

Just got word my family is all safe and well. Do try and stay safe Ross and everybody else in the area.

"only Wellington", geez, I've only been told only my entire life that we're only waiting for The Big One.

You will all be joyful to know that not so much as a slight bump/little wriggle/slip/slide/teensy shake was felt on the West Coast-

Wellington, Blenheim, wherever: I feel for you all. Keep as safe as you can, be as kind to yourself and others as you can, always sleep half-dressed with tramping boots by the bed and know that many of us are shuddering in sympathy. (It is an accepted fact in our house that the earthquake controller punishes those who sleep naked.)

I thoroughly recommend what we called “sleep juice” for distressed kids (and adults) who cannot sleep but desperately need to. An essential oil blend called ” Tranquil Sleep” by the horridly-named Dolphin Clinic. A few drops on the pillow and most times sleep is a certainty.

Arohanui all – and especially to Islander.

His job is not to make consent decisions, but to strengthen the team who does. Different skillset.

Oh yeah? The same Crown manager this week appointed to the city council, Doug Martin, was part of a team appointed to write a report on Ecan. As you say, different skillset.

Ta for that link. Eugenie Sage's comment #6 is interesting:

Govt does not need to appoint commissioners. Its changes to the Local Govt Act in 2012 give the Crown Manager substantial powers, more than those of a CEO. The Crown Manager can direct the Council including councillors which a CEO cannot. Would not be surprised to see Crown Manager given role of managing resource consents. Gov will have achieved a similar level of control of the Council as it has with commissioners at ECan without the accompanying public criticism.

Why on earth pay a godforsaken bureaucrat 2000 dollars a day for overseeing a group? It does nothing but encourage bullies to apply for the job and suck the very marrow out of an organization. Mr Marryatt that Ueberleech still here and creating nothing other than havoc .By the way what is Jenny Shippley doing for her remuneration?

The group may have a differing view than that which the govt seeks. An appointed single person can be more easily directed

And that's what I think it feels like here now. It may be perceived as not as bad (yet) but I feel this oppressive Govt is heading there fast.
At this point , (although peeps feel the opposition is useless), I feel strongly that any other combo Govt has to be better than this mob. The day they got in ,my heart sank. Today it's sunk

To top it off now Dunne has crawled back to JK and wormed his way back to that cesspit of corruption. Why are peeps so stupid even to think about spying on their own people let alone making it law.

  • Hebe,

I don’t have a problem with someone being brought to sort out the bureaucratic shambles at the CCC, and being paid well to do so. The management of the organisation has been disgraceful, so bad that the council is incapable of carrying out core functions.

Much rather that than commissioners being appointed and no elections for years at a crucial time of decision-making for the city. The shambles is so bad that there are no easy solutions. The appalling thing is that it should have got to this state.

It’s worth noting that Cera was installed after the February 2011 quake as a direct result of Marryatt and Parker’s misreading of the geological situation the city faced in the months after the September 2010 quake.

I just dont know. The creation of the fear you mentioned? I guess the 1% movement knew what we were getting huh? At least how it felt and not afraid to express themselves no matter how unsophisticated.
