  • Joe Wylie, in reply to Chris Waugh,

I’m going to assume they were of the more traditional variety

    Here they are.

  • Hebe, in reply to Chris Waugh,

The cathedral ones were; don't know about the chimney. Is swastika the right word given that we're talking about the ancient symbol? The appropriation of the symbol and forever linking it to the German word in the West continues that negative association.

  • Ian Dalziel, in reply to Chris Waugh,

    that bastard Schicklgruber…

…that way, way predates the Nazis’ appropriation of that symbol

“The cornerstone was laid on 16 December 1864, but financial problems in the fledgling city saw its completion delayed between 1865 and 1873.
In 1873 a new resident architect, New Zealander Benjamin Mountfort, took over the project and construction began again.
The nave, 100 foot (30 m) long, and tower were consecrated on 1 November 1881, but the transepts, chancel and sanctuary were not finished until 1904.”
    (from wikipedia )
So yes, a wee way prior to Herr Schicklgruber/Heidler’s rise and rise…
    …and fall.

Here’s a link to a pic of said tiles.

Fascinating detail on its use here:
Western use of the swastika early 20th century

  • Hebe,

Google sez the Indian word for swastika was swastika, Still sounds Germanic to me.

  • Just thinking,

It is used in the Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford too.

Oh dear that link got a bit scary.

The chimney is still just plywood cladding. It was used as a back drop for Newsboys reports on Christchurch.

  • Chris Waugh, in reply to Hebe,

Google sez the Indian word for swastika was swastika,

I'd be inclined to trust Google on that (although, Sanskrit, surely?). My German is way beyond rusted out, but I seem to remember the Nazi abomination of that symbol being called a Hakenkreuz. I also note the caption to the photo in Joe's link says:

(and a little notice explaining it's ancient usages)

And from the about page of that Proswastika site:

The word swastika is derived from the Sanskrit svastika

So I guessed right about the Sanskrit.

In Chinese it's a variant of the character 万, meaning 10,000 or myriad, everything, as in the line from the Daodejing:

    无名天地之始,有名万物之母

The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth, the named is the mother of the myriad things

That's my crappy translation. My excuse is I'm in the office struggling with the rubbish office computer and don't have a copy of the Daodejing on me to consult.

Why just the other day I was introduced to yoga asana swastikasana
not that I got all the way into the position...
    All in good time!

  • Hebe,

I'm looking at the local body nominations list on the CCC website and wondering if it is up to date (nominations closed at midday). The surprise is Cr Sue Wells not being on the list .

    Wells quits council.
so that's 3 dubious ex-broadcasters out of the equation
And I can cope with a new one, Ali Jones, if she rids us of Aaron Kleown...

Agreed, but there should be some other accountabilities levelled at those responsible for the farce of CCC governance.

  • Hebe, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

I'm in Spreydon-Heathcote: no Wells, no Barry Corbett, so a new start this time for council seats. Erin Jamieson of UCSA is standing: tick. Then either Steve Bush (Trees for Canterbury founder and good man) or for a better chance of getting in, independent Tim Scandrett. Phil Clearwater from the community board is standing for Labour-in-drag, the offputtingly named People's Choice. He's a good man but the CCC really doesn't need the local Labour Party to dominate with their toxic tribalism.

No Sam Johnson, but we do have Mark Belton, Lisle Hood, Rik Tindall. standing.
All of whom I've met in the wake of the quakes and have something to offer.

Agreed. My picks to get in (not necessarily who I support though some are) Vicki Buck a cert for Riccarton: so that will eliminate either Helen Broughton or Jimmy Chen, maybe both. I reckon Yani Johansen and Paul Lonsdale for Hagley-Ferrymead (Lonsdale will take over Tim Carter’s votes). Fendalton looks like an unholy scrap: some good people but the vote could be split many ways. Pegasus has shamefully few and a rather tired selection of candidates: no X-factor. Then Shirley: Ali Jones and? Whatever, It’s the end of the A-team.

An odd thing: Rod Cameron is listed as standing for two or three council seats and three community boards: how the hell does that work? Is it allowable? Talk about spreading the risk!

Colour me surprised too, though the death wish has been evident for some time.

Not my neck of the woods, but no problem here with Glenn Livingstone back for another term.

Helen Broughton has her failings but she does reflect community concerns about WESTFEILDS unlimited growth and is likely to be rewarded for that as Riccarton/Addington become the new CBD.

As for the Merivalian Man of Mauve - Paul Lonsdale ... it's horse before the cart to focus on the old city centre rather than other aspects of city life, where we live and work now.

I'm predicting who I think will make it to council -- not who I support. Lonsdale is not who I would vote for if I lived in that ward, but I will be surprised if he doesn't make it.
