Ok, sneaking in a little more playtime…

All I did to the sunflower was hit the B&W button.

    The plane, the plane.

Used the raw editor that came with the camera.

    A demonstration of channel splitting:

    top: colour original
    middle: converted to greyscale
bottom: colour image split to RGB, this is the red channel.

You can see how a colour separation can be much more contrasty and striking than greyscale.

This wasn't quite pure black and white, just mostly. If using photoshop I would have done the desaturation on a layer then set the opacity of the desaturated layer to control the blending

This one actually isn't black and white at all but I figure it looks close enough. It did have some tweaking of the light levels (curves) as it was mostly a nice day. We had been getting dramatic clouds, and I went to match the landmark to the cloud.

My most recent black and white photo: a floating toy piglet in the loo. I feel like this says something very poignant about the plight of the stay-at-home parent. ;)

I just save as jpg out of Photoshop, after resizing to about 1000 to 1200 width or height max. This seems to create images about 400 to 500k, which works pretty well here. If I’m exporting from iPhoto, same image size with Quality high, Custom size as above. Hope that helps.

Yeah, that does, thank you so much, I realised after I’d posted that I’d asked you before, but my memory these days… I’ll bookmark it this time!

Letting out a long wail, it seems I’m going to have to start to dabble in tweaking.

But in the meantime, this evening on Maungawhau (first one shot in colour and not converted….second one converted to B&W)

Another from my archives. For those that know Dunedin, I drove up Signal Hill to get the foreground for this when I saw the clouds.

Wow, great shot! That turbulent altocumulus is one of my very favourite formations. We get it sometimes here in NorWest weather.

    And really great stuff, everybody.

This thread is fascinating: I’m learning heaps and it inspired me to do battle with the software I haven’t been able to bend to my will – hence no photos for a while.

These two are from playing with the macro: part of a blue borage bud and a drip on a nasturtium.

So the combination of film and filter does the weird things. If I remember correctly the classic is a red filter to darken the skies.??

Check out the photographic suppliers now for various coloured filters, all heavily discounted! This one was yellow, which is meant to increase contrast between clouds and blue sky, except there was not much blue sky to be seen.
