  • Hugh Hughes,

and you used the echo to freestyle a version of the Rhythm Selection theme. That was very clever.

Clever. Hmm, probably just the weed Dubhead gave me everytime I mentioned his show in primetime.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Nor is the slot being extended. My comment about the 2-4 being extended was facetious

Yes I did get it wrong, stand corrected. Thinking about your comment on MH tardiness, I was reminded of a comment I heard the other day by 2 20 year olds when, having been given some work through their uni break and having been desperate for an earn said, "Oh I wont work tomorrow, it's Saturday"
Yeah, I know expectations an' all require a respect of the starting time and absolutely agree with your comment about, punctuality in such an important slot is expected and for those listeners off to work, still, I would have sorted the problem along time before if I had an issue.
An example could be this: My man had a problem getting to work at 6am whilst working on a movie (he had no car). Each morning someone designated would locate his whereabouts and pick him up and deliver him on time to work. I only discovered this the other day and thought "that's a bit spoilt", but, on reflection, his ability to do his job was valuable enough to facilitate, and easy enough to enact. I also note that Mikey's tardiness has had an effect on others on the b. John Key doesn't show up at all sometimes for his weekly update. ;)
Oh, and Damian, it's Sofie with an "f", I realise I am insignificant but as you noted earlier .....:)

  • Phillip Magee,

I'm not sure what name recognition Marcus Lush or Wallace Chapman brought with them. Don't people listen to Bfm because it is Bfm? I would have thought the dj was of secondary importance.
It strikes me as a mistake to use Matt for his "brand" value in the same way as hoping Mike would "sell" Bfm.
The very reasons I love Bfm is because of it"s lack of "professionalism".The mistakes and cock-ups are endearing.(This does not include turning up late every day. That is rude and arrogant.) But then I am not trying to sell advertising space.

  • Robbie Siataga,

we used to have a great Student Radio station here - until some ad salesman who apparently couldn't sell enough ads bought the station for a $1 off the Student Union (as I understand it)

He was first and foremost a drum n' bass DJ, but oh he's come along way baby since doing this remix for us back in the day. Still, all the best to him...

    http://idealog.co.nz/magazine/may-june-2008/features/diy

...though at the time i'd wondered if PZ hadn't run the station into the ground then made out he and his lady lawyer could be its only saviour by picking up the license for a dollar ?

'In actual fact', as that link points out, was later edited to say 'actually'. Which in actual fact doesnt actually mean a fuck of alot eh...so why bother ?

Dreadful idea to move Mike to drive-time. Tal about back to the future. Cut the cord. I like having five different dj's thru the week. Now I will not even bother listening to that time slot.

Yes, the irony of Mikey getting wound up by others not being punctual burned soooo bad. He's a real rough diamond that Havoc.

  • Wammo,

Feel compelled to weigh in right now to the defence of James & Karen who purchased RDU not long after I left in 2006. The station was never being "run into the ground", in fact every year I spent there the quality of it's output only improved. It was however being dicked by the management of the student union who had come to a stage where they neither understood or cared about owning a radio station. They were more interested in the output of the deep fryers and the coffee machine downstairs. Everyone working at RDU in 2006, including the sales team, were passionate talented individuals. It was the student union who had no vision for RDU.

James & Karen should be respected for taking a risk and saving the character or even existence of student radio in Christchurch and on campus. It could all so easily have degenerated into a Hamilton or even a Wellington situation where only low power true student radio exists (Active maybe in the b-net but it has no affiliation with Vic uni).

From what I've heard the staff feel valued, something I only experienced from co-workers, certainly not the student union management. There's also been significant capital investment under Fabel's management.

You see! One still feels passionate about the damn station when one should be concentrating on something else... Isn't live and on demand video streaming the future anyway... anyone? no? okay.

  • Damian Christie,

    1. Sorry Sofie :)

@Andrew C - yes, as I think I mentioned here a few years ago on this topic, Mike actually expressed indignation to me once at the fact that the breakfast host (yes, you Hugh) who had been there from 6-10 (am I right? 6am start?), wouldn't stick around and keep doing his show until 10.30ish for Mike to turn up! There's just so much lack of irony and self-consciousness there it's incredible.

@Phillip - This has been one of bFMs problems for a while, star-fucking. I believe any number of key appointments over the years have been made because the person in question has a TV show, a slot on music TV, or some other brand, rather than because they're doing good radio, and often in spite of the fact they're not. As I said before, I think Matt will do a good show, but it would have been a bold, fresh and symbolic move if the show had gone to someone unknown (or at least unknown outside of bFM), as @Andre suggests.

FYI, the bFM Twitter stream says Adam, Richie and Mr Crawley will "be moved to other slots" and is promising full details, including "a few more changes to the daily structure," by the end of the day, on the bFM website.

I can see some merit in putting people with a profile into key slots.

OTOH, the Cryptid Factor on Sunday mornings is kinda pissing me off. Much as I like Rhys Darby and David Farrier, if they can't make their show sound like more than a very long in-joke, perhaps they should give it up in favour of some kid who really wants it.

  • uroskin,

Speaking when wearing my hat as programme director at Triangle TV / Stratos TV, thanks for the commentary on "The Beat Goes On". It is a one-man-band-show (literally: producing, scripting, presenting, inteviewing, filming, editiing, delivering). All without state funding, of course. And he pays us to be on air, rather than the other way round in the case of all the media divas here. It possibly is the only sustainable form of free-to-air television when the advertising and the state funding get cut out soon.

As a former newsreader on bFM (in Graeme Hill's breakfast days, and Lisa Van Der Aarde's drive show) I still listen but not to breakfast, RNZ National is too valuable. And I appreciate George FM and RNZ Concert in equal measure.

Another point, I have always liked bfm breakfast, even the dipsy lady whose name I can't remember, and, don't think she was well known before her show.. It hasn't really been about the host, it's been about the show and all the marvelous contributions from all involved on the day. But, Mikey does make me laugh out loud and go an' wake t'other half up to tell him something he said. I think it's Mikey's stream of consciousness that reverbs on a basic level for anyone to feel at home, included without being scrutinised if one wants to contribute. Text, email, phone in, all welcome. I like that.

    @ Uroskin,

Don't get me wrong. As much fun as it is to take the piss out of that show, I love it, because in a sea of imported culture it's a little slice of real New Zealand on the tube. It may be ghastly, but it's our ghastly.

I'm a big fan of the station.

While I've got you here, could you put the 1:00 am movies back to 12 please. :)

Oddly enough, he was hired at bFM as an advertising creative, not in an on-air role. The Breakfast gig came some time later.

Charlotte Ryan came from RDU around the same time and was originally hired as brand manager. She's my favourite bFM host at the moment. Great interview yesterday with Scribe and Savage.

BTW: are they really so bereft of ideas at Radio Ponsonby that they had to call their Breakfast show Morning Glory? Or did they simply not know that's what Charlotte's show is called?

  • Phillip Magee,

I fail to understand how Mickey can fail to turn up on time for breakfast, yet the traffic will be much kinder in the afternoon.
Simply exchanging one middle-aged man for another(sorry Matt) screams of lack of imagination. What are the priorities here?As a listener I could not care if only twelve people are listening. We seem to be chasing our tails. Bfm needs the ratings to get advertising to pay for too many staff. This is an alternative music station not BBC International.
Keep the station manager on full-time and pay the dj"s by the hour. It strikes me at the very point a person becomes a full-time employee of the station the ethos takes back seat to self-preservation. When did "working" at Bfm become a job for life?

According to Cheese on Toast, this is the new deal:

    Breakfast with Matt 6-9am

Morning Glory 9-noon (an extra hour for Charlotte)

The Wire cut back to an hour.

New 1-4pm afternoon shows with various hosts.

    Drive with Mikey 4-7pm.

bFM's nurturing of editorial talent has been one of its great glories. I learned so much doing Wire shows, and I'm far from the only one.

Cutting The Wire in half is a terrible, terrible move -- and it looks like it's been done solely to make the other programming decisions fly.

  • Phillip Magee,

What sort of profile would one need to enhance Bfm. By that logic Liam Finn would be the dream host. But would that bring one more listener? At the risk of repeating myself the host should be subservient to the station not the other way around.
What makes Bfm great is 1) The music
    2) The music
    3) The music
    4) The people
The music always seemed secondary on breakfast. coming a distant second to animal noises and (even as a confirmed leftie)some ridiculous conspiracies involving George Bush of wingnut proportions.
While I am whinging away, even as someone stuck in afternoon traffic every day I cannot stand the "Traffic Report" What are we? Newstalk ZB?

That is REALLY bad news. Apart from the being one of the few radio shows that can interview people for up to 20mins at a time without ads, it's been a really rich training ground for journalists and broadcasters.
