  • Richard Stewart,

Ventured out to support Heart Attack Alley at the Wine Cellar on Saturday night. They're fundraising for a trip to Europe to record with Voodoo Rhythm Records, and oh lordy what an impressive sound they make. Go and see them live - you won't be disappointed

  • Ian Dalziel,

    Grimes treat...

    It's lovely, girly, electronica.
That's what I'm trying to say.

at last a new gamine waif enigma,
with the chops to back it up...
...very 4AD, up there with This Mortal Coil.
hmmmm, what random factors can I throw in to the prize pick mix...

    Close enough for Jazz...
    One to watch from Christchurch:
    Ella Dunbar-Wilcox

written and performed while still at Intermediate...

    Capital Classic...
before design stores roamed the Earth, there was...
    Naked Spots Dance
and it was good, well they were...

    Roeg wave...
warning this sign has Jaggered edges...

  • Jos,

I love this lady, Anais Mitchell, she has a wonderful new album out ‘Young Man in America’, but this clip is one of the songs from Hadestown. This is her just doing it straight to camera on her farm

That little girl is astounding, Ian. And jazz at 12? Seriously impressed.

  • Kumara Republic,

My favourite track on the album is this one, ‘Genesis’, which they appear to be giving away as a free download on the site. I think it’s what it would sound like if Clannad and Kraftwerk got together for an orgy. Erm, in a good way. It’s lovely, girly, electronica. That’s what I’m trying to say.

You’re right, Craig, it’s a bit like “Autobahn” in a New Beetle. The full 22-minute album cut of it.

And on a related note, Giorgio Moroder boasted the following on 1977’s From Here To Eternity: “Only electronic keyboards were used in the making of this album.”

And Manuel Göttsching couldn’t find any light music to play on long plane trips in 1981… so necessity was the mother of invention.

  • jb,

"All Songs Considered" is what public radio should be (and in this case, is) delivering. Despite being underfunded. Despite constant attacks by conservative politicians to reduce its funding even further.
    How do they do it?
With sponsorship from local companies, major corporations and private citizens.
First thing I do when I hire a car in the States is to head for the 90 (+/- 2) MHz region on the dial.

Amazing talent. So good to see a very young person so into their passion.
Tonight I watched one of my sons discover a new love. I smiled my face tired as I watched him have his first lesson on the Highland 'pipes. He bloomed as he quickly got the fingering on the chanter, and he is still buzzing. Neat; one of those special experiences I'll always remember, and I think he will too.

Jeepers. That would be the daughter of Leonard Wilcox, my former teacher and pal at the university, and Jane Dunbar of The Press. Leonard is a very good jazz drummer.

  • George Darroch,

I like this thread. I often discover music months or years after the wave has passed; it’s still good music.

John Talabot sends shivers down me. He’s good:

Last year’s Metals, by Feist was terribly overlooked, so I’m throwing it in here. In a better world, it’d be heralded as a classic:

And Bobby Womack has a new album upcoming. That in itself should be enough. But the crisp modern production means it’s warm honey on chunky buttery goodness. I’m looking forward to this.

And as of this evening, I’m in love with Grimes. Thanks.

(That this has less than a million views is simply criminal, in this day and age).

Best Coast is one of those bands you think you've heard before. Most likely you have, but I'm still getting to know them.

    On the money, Geoff!
Though I'd have expected a University Lecturer to play, not drums, but the 'tenure sax'...

Though for a pun like that you'd need a drum-roll.

    Not bad, eh?

It always amazes me, although I know he's not to everyone's taste, how he keeps re-inventing his wheel. Like a reptilian shape-shifter.

This a remix of my favourite from Wake up the Nation.
