  • simon g,

I think the idea is to finish him off with a warm cuddle.

When the SST/ACT realize that the only people left expressing any sympathy for Garrett are those lily-livered liberals on Public Address ... well, then they'll want him gone too.

    Rehabilitation Rocks! Save Dave!

Did David Garrett murder Ernie Abbott?

That really is quite a leap of logic, and not one which reflects my view, or the view of the site, in any way. Srsly.

Thanks Russell. Random murder accusations are a weird thing to be saying, even in jest. And I have no idea whether that is a statement in jest. If it's serious, then that's just wrong.

Said as someone who has walked past Wellington Trades Hall and felt a twinge of sadness on seeing the plaque on many occasion.

It would be interesting to know the DOB on the forged passport. 26 would be just over the age of eligibility for UK working holiday status at the time.

  • Gary Chiles,

Apologies for the earlier rush-of-blood out of order comment....

What I meant to say is that nothing I have heard or read has convinced me that the serious crime of identity theft isn't concealing an even more serious crime, the trades hall bombing was just the most high profile unsolved crime from 1984 that leapt into my head.

Not trying to cause trouble, just got those annoying nagging alarms on my bullshit detector going crazy when I try to get this story to add up.

Not convinced that identity theft is the end of it.

  • Jason Lea,

Garrett's counsel had said he had been working on an oil rig in a ''roughneck'' lifestyle.

Hide admitted his own transgressions on Close Up, saying that when he was a young man working on an oil rig he had been arrested for being drunk at Heathrow Airport

oil rigs. interesting. is that where you recruit Act party candidates?

  • Just thinking,

David Garrett doesn't exist. He is a Soviet Spy in deep cover.

Once a Communist, then Labour, but it was all an ACT.

He must be deported to Mother Russia.

Discovering via the lifting of the order that Garrett has experienced mental illness takes the fun out of the meme a bit.

  • izogi,

Garret should have applied for the lifting of name suppression the moment he considered public office. The fact that he didn't is deceitful to say the least. [...snip...] I may go as far as saying this was election fraud, a deliberate concealment of the facts so as to gain public office.

Yes we now know that he didn't, thanks to an anonymous leaky person, and he's already been there for a couple of years. Unless that continues to happen years after people are elected, we'll never know for sure how many other MPs are actually nasty people who didn't apply to lift their name suppression around an embarrassing crime at the time they decided to run for office. Perhaps in the grand scheme of things David Garrett was just unlucky compared with his mates, but there's no way we can know for certain.

If there was an election rule that said that a judge had to reconsider suppression orders on people who decide to run for public office, only allowing the suppression to stay under circumstances where they protect other people, for instance, there'd be a better chance that voters would be informed about who they're voting for... even if they're nasty people who'd rather keep that hidden.

I guess nearly any employer would like that kind of information about applicants and there are reasons why they don't have it. Personally I see MPs as being a special case, where name suppression shouldn't be as easy to maintain, given the responsibility they have combined with the generally lesser amount of checks and balances. It depends on where you draw the line, I guess.

Mental health issues affect a very large section of the population. As many as you'd expect, on the right, and as many as you'd expect on the left.

Well it's not is it. There is an entirely split party going on here. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and not least a woman with support amongst those that matter.Bear in mind the elephant in the room is female and has been smited.Act is about self. Well capable of hanging themselves. Well so far.

  • andin,

    And human beings make mistakes.

I'll not be dissauded from the view that politicians should be expected to be respectable.

And here we all are, including pricks like Garrett, stuck between what we are, and what we think we should be.
Who started this respectable meme? Anyone? or did we just stumble into it, like most of the stupidity that doesn't make sense anymore.

  • Sonic,

" the immigration department (or whatever it's called) would have brought this up at the time of the court case, "

That got me thinking, he didn't have to use the passport to get in and out of NZ to use it. I'm sure someone travelling abroad (especially in the pacific islands) could get away with using a false NZ passport and leave no record that anyone in, say Tonga, could recover after all these years.

He had a reason, no-one commits that sort of serious fraud as a prank.

  • Lucy Stewart,

I had a serious WTF? moment when he disclosed he was attending the House and caucus drunk. How could anyone not have noticed and done something?

There was a recent study (don't have a link ATM) which found that even bartenders - who see a lot of drunks - were pretty much useless at correctly identifying someone as drunk/sober unless the person was totally off their face. In a situation where no-one would reasonably expect their colleague to be drunk? Quite frankly, I'd be astonished if anyone had noticed.

  • dc_red,

Mr McVicar did not return calls yesterday.

Possibly the first time that sentence has ever been written?

In terms of the victims of this type of "prank," RadioNZ had an insightful interview yesterday with a father whose dead son's identity was stolen in similar circumstances. I'd be surprised if it didn't bring a tear to the eye of many listeners.

This may just be me, but Key's description of Garrett's offence as "bizarre" doesn't cut it. I would have thought a much stronger adjective ("repugnant", perhaps?) would be appropriate. Still, at least he's not "relaxed" I guess....
