  • Jo S,

    Federer is just ridiculously classy.
I'm not a huge tennis fan, but i still enjoy watching him play.

I could never build up any enthusiasm for watching Sampras when he was at the top of his game.

Federer's ball placement (pause for giggle) is better than anyone I've seen. It's like he's got the damn thing on a string.

If you know anything about the game, you can just know that that Federer will reward your time in watching him. Unless he's in a slump.

Me neither. He was clearly a very fine tennis player, but the thrill was missing.

"Oh sure the Chipmunk in a Singlet is injured, but that's all part of being the greatest. You don't get there by getting hurt. And you definitely don't get there by never recovering from a slump."

Nice points - Nadal is good, no doubt, though to be great, you have to have longevity and that's what Feder is achieving.

I think people like Federer because he seems geniune (refer tears at the Aus open) Where as every dislikes for example. Leighton Hewwit who comes across as a cockly lil basterd.

  • Hadyn Green,

I feel a little sorry for Andy, his brother was in stands and got caught eating a booger:

He also looks like some kind of god leaping to take his new place on Olympus, methinks.

That's probably just his balls. (Three comments, two balls jokes. That's a pretty good ratio)

  • Angus Robertson,

There can be no doubting, no consideration. If you are asked "who is the greatest tennis player of all time?" you have to say, Roger Federer.

    Or Rod Laver.

As it neared 6.00 am I began to wonder if the idiots were about to cut the final in favour of some idiot breakfast show like they did the Warwinka game...

  • LegBreak,

Comparing players between eras is always a bit dodgy, but Laver did have the prime of his career cut from his CV during the professional wars.

BTW, can’t understand why Serena Williams is never mentioned in despatches as greatest female tennis player of all time.

  • 3410,

Another epic Wimbledon final, though I'd still rate last year's as better.

Federer was clearly a bit below par, or else he'd have blown Roddick away, but huge respect to Roddick; he played his arse of till the end, embarrassed Roger, and accepted the defeat with great humility, especially for an American (joke.)

It's about time the women played 5 set matches.

All games continued on TV2 after 6am barring the first day didn't they?

  • LegBreak,

    @NalyD,
I think they only started moving to TV2 in the middle of last week, although for most of Week 1 they didn’t need to.

    @3410,
    Well said, on all points.

I find myself compelled to share some tweets from @RealBillBailey:

"great tennis final , well done Federer, but at 14games all I was hoping they'd just settle it with a quiz or something"

"or an egg and spoon race round Centre Court, or flicking beermats, or how long you can balance a baguette on your chin..anything"

"or just guess the weight of Prince Michael of Kent.."

Because Martina Navratilova is better? Or Steffi Graf? Actually there's a good argument

    Wellington • Since Nov 2006 • 2090 posts Report

  • LegBreak,

Without Googling, I’d say Navratilova would have most of the records, and she did it at the same time that Chris Evert-Lloyd was around; a rivalry that will probably never be bettered.

Serena isn’t there yet, but I’d have thought she deserves to be compared by now.

I'd say that is not mentioned, because to do so would be rude to Venus. Cue variants of what James Ormond said to Mark Waugh repeated in various ladies locker rooms.

Also Serena spent alot of time injured and recovering during the mid-00s and Justine Henin spent a lot of time winning Grand Slam tournaments during the mid-00s, now Henin has retired and Serena is winning tournaments again.

And Serena had that fashion label phase too (Roger needs to be careful there; the Cabin Boy jokes have already started)

Ah yes, Justine Henin; a contender in the worst sportsman / woman of all time award.

  • Tom Semmens,

Sport is always great for learning new life lessons.

Like finding out that Hitler was a fellow who got things done!

"...Formula One commercial rights holder, Bernie Ecclestone, has stoked up controversy by claiming that Adolf Hitler was a man who "was able to get things done", that democracy has not worked out for Britain... ...Ecclestone... ...said: "In a lot of ways, terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Hitler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was in the way that he could command a lot of people, able to get things done,..."

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised, since his great chum and head of the FIA Max Mosley is a noted fascist. This is not only because he is the son of Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists in WWII, but also because Max likes dressing up as a Nazi in sex games with prostitutes, with the hookers playing Jewish camp inmates.

There is something SERIOUSLY fucked up about Formula 1.

The question he was asked was "Who is your favourite fascist dictator?" WTF was he supposed to say?

but also because Max likes dressing up as a Nazi in sex games with prostitutes, with the hookers playing Jewish camp inmates.

Tom, dude, the women were dressed as German soldiers. Max Mosley is a SUB. Okay, you don't like the guy or his sexual practices, but could you not just make shit up please?

I don't know, ummm... possibly not Adolf Hitler? Just throwing it out there.

As for that low life Mosley, I am not condemning his sexual preferences, except where that it CLEARLY relates to his personal views. He can sub or dom in whatever way takes his fancy, the only reason I got it wrong is because I don't care for the man and couldn't be bothered with being more accurate. The fact that he like to play the sub just makes it little bit more pathetic in my eyes.

The whole organisation frankly reeks of unreconstructed Nazism, something for which I choose to take personally.

Nice, Tom. So you make a really offensive statement that has NO basis in fact, and top it off with 'subs are pathetic'.

But you're taking his 'unreconstructed Nazism' personally, so you get to just slag people off with no basis, yes? Charming.

Max sold 100 years of F1 TV rights to Bernie for about the same amount of money it would take to buy 2 years of NASCAR TV rights. 5 years later Bernie sold 75% of those rights for lots more to a highly leveraged hedge fund. So 75% of every cent that every F1 fan on the planet pays (through the f@#king nose) is being used to pay off debts of the same people who have just wrecked the worlds economy and 25% goes to Bernie.

In a effort to contextualise this I'll use a local example. Kiwiblog contends that Dr Cullen paid Toll ($655million) twice what the Railways are worth and DPF cites this as an example of gross incompetence amongst the previous government, general political misrepresentations aside it looks kind of bad. To come close (in levels of shear pathetic-ness) to the financial ineptness of Max our finance minister would need to have paid about $25billion for the railways (and then spent the next 8 years attending parties as a guest of Toll Holdings).

And the really funny thing is that Max did not appear to do this for any other reason than a lifelong ability to cavort around the world in a series of F1 parties, as president-assumed-for-life of the FIA. It does not appear that he has been paid off in any sort of bribe, he did not benefit financially, so why did he do it? why was the deal he made so pathetic?

He likes getting beaten up by prostitutes.
