  • Yamis,

    From that article

    All Blacks jersey prices:

    USA -
    RWC version - US$89.99 - NZD$103.80 (worldrugby.com)
    Test version - US$79.99 - NZD$92.60 (worldrugby.com)

    UK
    RWC version - 64.99pounds - NZD$122.20 (rugbystore.co.uk)
    test version - 54.99pounds - NZD$107.70 (rugbystore.co.uk)

    NZ
RWC version - $220 (Ryos in Wellington and Champions of the World)
Test version - $190 (Ryos in Wellington and Champions of the World)

*Overseas prices do not include postage and packing

That's just absurd. With our dollar where it is the price should have come down. Clearly NZers are being ripped massively. They'd be importing them for under $100 NZ and flicking them off for $220.

I have heard that the Adidas stores are getting pissed off because people have been going in and trying them on to get the right size and then going and buying online overseas. They are saying that people should be supporting the NZ [ripoff] market. Funny when they are getting them made in China.

Radio Sport has been on it.

    and there's also this

Mr Huggett confirmed that some overseas websites are being investigated to see if they were breaking a cross-border agreement which stops them from selling to New Zealand residents.

So they have laws which allow them to rip people off? Another fine hour for the 'free market'.

I would like to see the drop goal devalued to either 1 or 2 points to turn it into a tie breaker and not an attacking option.
However for now it is far too undervalued by the ABs and should be used more often.

  • Sacha,

Campbell Live's story on the jersey pricing rort (7 min clip) includes the Rebel Sport/Briscoes head, Rod Dukes, estimating an unjustified 35% wholesale difference which he has unsuccessfully complained about to Adidas local and regional head offices.

  • Kumara Republic,

So it's not the factory creaming it, and it's not the retailers, nor is it the shippers. And somehow it's little to do with economies of scale or currency fluctuation either. BTW are the Adidas stores franchises or company-owned?

Unlike electronic goods, there's no warranty to void with buying these jerseys from overseas.

There was a similar kind of controversy in Europe about 10 years ago with car makers.

I would like to see the rules changed so you can't run with the ball or use your hands and play the game as God intended.

As for the jersey thing, it is all about greed, the same greed that killed the game as far as I am concerned.

  • Paul Williams,

Thanks for this posting this Sacha. It's a very balanced story and I was grateful for the inclusion of the Oxfam commentary. Well done Campbell and producers/team. It would have been easy to simply interview outraged fans.

I love rugby, think the All Blacks are a fantastic team and also applaud the improved and more inclusive rugby culture that's been developed over the last few decades. I'm not naive about the costs of professionalism and as Campbell points out, we've got a great team because we pay for them to stay rather than flood to wealthier nations. I still though, think Adidas have got this wrong and I'm in the target market. I've got a older strip, and I might've got a new one, but I'm not going to legitimise this, it's obscene price gouging.

  • Steve Barnes,

Are we really surprised that Adidas want their pound of flesh? The NZRU were the ones to dump CCC, who, just by chance, seem to have a sale on, 60% off

  • Rich of Observationz,

Just get a black shirt with “New Zealand” on it for $30 – they haven’t been able to ban those. If you want to help sport, give the $190 or so you save to a kids rugby team.

  • BenWilson,

I've got an old Canterbury All Blacks shirt that will serve. I got an official beanie for $20, but that was mainly because it is actually a good beanie, and my head has been getting cold. $90 for a shirt with All Blacks written on it? Get real. I'll be wearing a Polar fleece over it anyway, most likely.

As a recent purchaser of such a t-shirt, is there anything to stop you going down the local printing shop and getting what ever the hell you like on a nice black polo with a white collar? As long as you’re not selling it.

‘It’s for personal use, ociffer, honest.’

I am pretty sure there probably is, but the levels of protectionism on a few compound nouns is starting to seem a little absurd.

Ps. Go the All Blacks! Can I say that?

seem to have a sale on, 60% off

They even have a Rugby World Cup Polo for $80. Guess they got permission.

Only if you mean it with all your heart. If I find out you're a sneaky 'Boks supporter, there will be hell to pay.

Does the devil take credit? I mean he wears Prada, so it seems logical. But no, I am most definitely a fully fledged All Blacks supporter. It was only hours ago I was chastising a group for being cynical about our WC prospects.

    Visa or Mastercard, apparently.

Today the t-shirt would say “Quade who? Pfft!”

Indeed, the wonder halves from the super 15 looked directionless. Watching in a Sydney pub last night I was amused that many Aussie fans had resorted to playing games on their smart phones by half time!

Remind me again why God gave us hands, so we can keep them in our pockets while we kick a ball, these seem to be designed for grappling etc rather than that!

Very. I'm nervous that the All Blacks are peaking too early in the season again. When Oz got going, they were very hard to stop, and read the intercepts well. It's going to be a good season.

I'm choosing not to be. Where as last time we had 'rotation' (yeah, rotate on that), this time we would call it 'depth'. Put Zach Guilford and Cory Jane in the mix last night (sorry Mr Gear, you're not on my bus), and I suspect that second half would look different. On that note, what was the great 'Colin Slade experiment' all about? It must be that shortage of in form wingers we have.

I'm no Nostradamus (no, really), but my prediction is our biggest threat will come from the North. As it often has. Do we have any bench mark for how France, Ireland and England are playing?

By one point. After losing the first half by 17. They got trounced.

Yup, but it was just a different game to watch in the second half. A much better performance by the Wallabies, many lessons for both teams there.

It was a different game because it was over. If the Wallabies take any heart from having 'won the second half', they're toast.
