  • Martin Lindberg, in reply to BenWilson,

Seems like long odds whether the incident actually happened at all

and it's pretty unlikely that it will happen again on RWC opening night. at least in AKL. in 2011. in fact, it really is so unlikely to happen again that it probably did not happen at all.

Depends what you think the incident was. The Aussie reports, read closely, don’t go further than quoting an un-named person as saying that another person was a cabinet minister. I imagine if I were a harried hospo worker, telling an Aussie reporter that some random drunk in a suit was a cabinet minister and couldn’t be controlled would be both a great way of getting them off your back and playing a hilarious jape. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the incident of the staff member tweaking the journo really happened.

Great story, thanks Sofie. Great to hear kiwis are still so hospitable, to South Africans even.

  • Steve Barnes,

    So, who's to blame.
    First the problem.
200,000 ish people were at the waterfront. Why?
When the powers that be i.e. the NZRFU, decided that Eden Park would be the Venue for most of the Auckland games the Waterfront proposal should have been dropped.
    But...

"Party central - it'll be a place to congregate. There'll be large TV screens and bars and places for people to come along and celebrate and you can imagine it won't just be the six weeks of the campaign," says Prime Minister John Key.

Fact is it was the decision to keep Eden Park as the Main venue that was the fumble. With the Rugby season stretching out into the Spring and starting sometime shortly after after it finishes, it needs a stadium of its own, not Eden Park "The Home of Auckland Cricket"

The Park became the home of Auckland Cricket in 1910. The Auckland Rugby Union leased the Park in 1914, officially making Eden Park its home in 1925.

    Note, leased not owned.
Trevor Mallards idea for the Waterfront Stadium should have gained more traction but

Sports Minister Trevor Mallard refused to comment today on the Auckland Regional Council's decision to support a revamped Eden Park rather than a planned new stadium on the city's waterfront.

So, we could have blamed the ARC and they do these things so well but they are no longer, and who's decision was that, eh?. Needless to say

Mr Key has not given any hint as to whether he endorses the report.

    Relaxed I suspect.
I have to admit I didn't like the idea of the Waterfront Stadium but in retrospect, it would have been great. We could of had total chaos.
    ;-)

I guess that as the NZRU is no longer called the NZRFU I stand corrected.

the national union was known as the New Zealand Rugby Football Union or NZRFU. The name was officially shortened in 2006 with the removal of the world “Football”.

But who is this RFU of whom you speak? An easy mistake I accept as

The decisions announced today were unchanged from those recommended by the Board of RNZ 2011 Ltd and ratified by the Board of Rugby World Cup Limited (RWCL) which met in Dublin, Ireland, on Wednesday.

Or did you mean the IRB?

ETA. IMHO, AFAIK, IANAL, WTF YMMV, Annat, innit?
ETAA. Acronyminity not intended to offend. ;-)

  • Glenn Pearce,

RFU generally refers to the English Rugby Footbal Union I believe.

Regarding the witchhunt for a scapegoat for friday, where does the entity known as "Auckland Regional Steering group for the Rugby World Cup 2011" fit into this kerfuffle. The name alone suggests at least they should have had visibility of the issues ?

I found This quite informative as a bit of history...

    Scragged, beaten and bitter

    By Paul Panckhurst
    Saturday 1st June 2002

This year will go down in history as the year the NZRFU, through a mixture of apathy, incompetence and childish behaviour, lost New Zealand the Rugby World Cup. Paul Panckhurst reveals, among other things, just why we couldn't get those stadiums clean.

Don't call us, we won't call you

Once upon a time, there was a company with a couple of corporate boxes. The company was Fletcher Building; the boxes were at Eden Park. It was early March 2002.

  • Rich of Observationz,

Can someone explain how they can do this?

s.48 of the RWC Empowering Act allows the Minister to declare something a permitted activity. That seems to me to be rather different from taking someone's land under arbitrary central government control.

Because the concept of kicking the ball brought back too many bad memories?

    Administering shock treatment...

Government seizes control of Auckland waterfront

    Too much, too late ...
so who will run the day-to-day?
Will Dame Margaret Bazley and the Commissioners
be flown in with help from the army?
Perhaps Gerry Brownlee can be sent in
to give an insensitive shake up as well...
Paula Bennett can press gang the unemployed
into cleaning and the like while Little Stevie Joyce
can direct traffic, with a cone on his head...

It could be the '51 lock out all over again,
I wouldn't rate their ability to organise
a piss up for a foreign brewery highly

Jeez, talk about loose cannons, and McCully is
    Foreign Affairs Minister too...
Gawd help us all - hopefully this will
    help them lose the election.

No. The fact that somebody indulges in apathy, incompetence and childish behaviour does not exclude them from having power, unfortunately.

I can only conclude that you may need to study up on the various organisations involved in the decisions. Hopefully Russell may post a new thread about this soon.

Then you conclude incorrectly. That is the last thing I NEED to do, do I look Bothered?
Perhaps if you want to pin the blame for anything anywhere then may I suggest you do some studying instead of just dropping great gobs of other peoples work into your posts and criticising everything others have to offer.

  • Russell Brown,

Radio NZ news says Len Brown is only just now being briefed about the waterfront takeover.

Which appears to mean that McCully announced it to journalists without telling the Mayor of Auckland.

    Far out.

  • DexterX,

Yes - the only way that "we" can save ourselves is to behave like a one party communist state - that one party being National and NZ becoming the National New Zealand People's Democratic Republic.

I am surprised that citizen Key and Co didn't pass a GFC Empowering Act .

The following - adapted from a Bob Beresford post on Radiolive website.

    Message to fellow Citizens,

Len Brown very bad, he idiot, he the problem we make this clear, This never happen again in Party Central District, when we properly host next Rugby World Cup celebration real good time everybody have.

First we have spontaneous demonstration of affection for our Beloved Leader – John Key the First - with the only working NZ army LAV driving around square in circles, round and round, as happy workers army of mens and womens march around - perfect step - all their feet going up down, up down, up down, then they salute as they pass by Supreme Leader John key. He is sitting on balcony with benevolent smiling look, smiling at happy people who love him, all marching around Party Central with feet going up down, up down, all afternoon.

Happy revolutionary guards of Young National Party all around, smiling, everybody smiling and very happy. Happy, happy smiling peoples everywhere wearing John Key Badges.

Tourists can enjoy this display and then take trains to Rugby games and closing ceremony which is more better than Len Brown party but not as good as military display for birthday of beloved father of country First Citizen John key the First.

Who needs rugby then? Okay, we can do it anyway First Citizen so generous to people of world. No problems with trains, no problem with Len Brown. Too many people getting on train? - We take them off and take them away for questioning and cultural re-integration. Okay, if they stay on train torture worse no problem we have them disappear, no problem for them, no problem for me, no problem for you.

People on railway tracks?! No good. We make them push broken LAV around and around in circles then we show them love. They not understand how to love and respect Supreme Leader and they stop train from being on time, they most ungrateful. They make mistake of leftist ideology. Big mistake not to love first citizen..

Everyone else very happy to see games in National New Zealand People’s Democratic Republic, and also show much love to our beloved leader First Citizen John Key the First.

Rugby World Cup very easy. In National New Zealand People's Democratic Republic everyone very happy, very organised and very much love a lot of supreme leader John Key the First.

    Much love and big ups,

Murray McCully - Special Envoy for Beloved First Citizen of the National New Zealand People’s Democratic Republic.
