  • Tze Ming Mok,

29 and the Beauty and the Beast reference missed me. Shame on my name.

My brother and I called him Buylose Onebad, in a display of mad English skillz.

Nice work on the forum Russell, and good on Asia:NZ as usual for putting it together, despite the ol' 'missing in action' syndrome from certain journalists... Now that sure brings back memories: I'm sure this isn't the first time Mark Jennings has been expected at an 'ethnicky' type thing and didn't show. Well, no-one likes to feel provincial.

    Peppermint Gomez, signing off.

  • Neil Morrison,

The impression persists that what alarmed the authorities was less any failure of taste than the prospect of people getting too used to the idea of voting and getting what they vote for.

And people trash reality TV. Maybe the UN could send Julie Christie to Burma.

  • Amy Gale,

    > BTW, does anyone under 35 understand the

It's probably a litmus test for under-35s who pulled sickies.

  • Ben Austin,

Wasn't Selwyn's attraction partly that he actually made an effort and went outside of the big cities? Sorta like Top Town and the like

  • Craig Ranapia,

SKY had the chance to get Al Jaz last year and plumped for Fox (the propaganda channel of the Republican Party) instead.

Oh Lord, when does Karl Rove sleep... To be quite blunt, every time I see one of those sickeningly creep billbaords/bus shelter ads for the new -ish
http://citv.co.nz/__Crime and Investigation Network__ channel (!!!)
I don't think being on Sky's roster is really much to aspire to. There must be some elegant equation to express the direct inverse relationship between the number of Sky channels, and the overall quality of the content.

A little hint to Sky's advertising department, whoever came up with the good idea of putting a jolly little factoid about mass murderers preferring public places around the Britomart Transport hub deserves to be taken out the back for a good kicking.

  • Fran O'Sullivan,

It was great to meet Veronica Pedrosa and Sagarika Ghose at the Asia NZ dinner with Helen Clark - it's a pity they were not exposed to a broader group perhaps a roundtable with opinion leaders not just working journalists maybe in future?
I found both journalists extremely impressive when I touched base at the Asia NZ dinner. But I was not personally in the position to fund a couple of days to get up to Auckland for the seminar - so unfortunately it was a miss this time.
One of the problems these days is that newsrooms are so denuded that journalists find it difficult to take time out to go to seminars. Even if they are interested - their bosses often have other priorities.
It probably doesn't help that Asia NZ seems to have a bias against MSM - in favour of local ethnic media and diversity - they need to get over that and work to build a bigger stage for visiting Asian journalists so that they may at least touch base with power brokers/pollies and get some feel for the country to inform their own future reporting or commentary.
    This visit probably helped that.

    Hi Fran,

I found both journalists extremely impressive when I touched base at the Asia NZ dinner. But I was not personally in the position to fund a couple of days to get up to Auckland for the seminar - so unfortunately it was a miss this time.

There was also a meeting with local journalists on Thursday in Wellington. Still, good thing you got to meet them at dinner.

One of the problems these days is that newsrooms are so denuded that journalists find it difficult to take time out to go to seminars. Even if they are interested - their bosses often have other priorities.

Yeah, I'm sure that's a big factor. Ironically, one thing that came out of the seminar for me was how useful not having a conventional media proprietor is for Jazeera and the Australia Network. Is David Geffen still looking at buying the LA Times back from the Tribune Group? He should.

I'd honestly debate that Asia: NZ has "a bias against MSM". I think they try really hard to engage with the mainstream media; it's just that the ethnic media offers a more willing ear. But anyway, glad you got to meet the visitors: I dined with them two nights running, and enjoyed their company a lot.

  • Keri Welham,

    Hi Russell,

Great to be able to catch up on what we missed.
The lunch here in Wgtn for those of us who couldn't make it north was cancelled after Air New Zealand dumped the scheduled flight at short notice. Some of us had swapped shifts in an attempt to ensure we could commit to being there - thereby hoping to avoid the classic MSM no-show that you speak of. I blame the erupting, sorry "burping", mountain.
Anyway, Charles sent us poor cousins down south various links to stories/blogs on the event. I'm now more intrigued than ever. Next time...
