oh bollocks to that, it was a great idea and I suspect Bowie would have enjoyed the joke.

The Timaru Herald is a spoof news source, like the Onion or Waterford Whispers, right?

….. Old Coulsdon man delivered David Bowie’s milk in summer of ’69

Chris, who went to Quernmore School, said Bowie - a former Croydon College pupil - ordered three bottles of silver top milk to be delivered every couple of days.

  • Russell Brown,

Ah! There’s an instance of Alan Yentob’s 1975 film Cracked Actor on YouTube that has somehow survived the copyright cops since 2013. I gather Bowie’s misgivings about the film’s very raw depiction of him may have been a factor in its rarity over the years.

It’s Yentob’s first production for the BBC and might actually be the best music documentary the Beeb has ever made. A must-watch:

Steve Braunias this morning in the Herald looks at the stories behind five songs from Bowie's back catalogue http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=11574554

  • Steve Barnes,

After reading the Steve Braunias article I made the mistake of reading other pieces in the rag we laughingly refer to as or “National Newspaper”
NZ’s youngest offender only 3 years old the article was called “3 year old accused of stealing teddy” but for some reason the Herald likes to change its headlines from time to time, perhaps to make us think its a different story and they get more page hits or something. Anyhoo, a sample from said article…

Details released under the Official Information Act show under-5s questioned by police had committed offences of theft and property damage.

One case involved the 3-year-old from Counties Manukau who allegedly stole a teddy bear from a supermarket….
    ….
    Age. Offence.

10 Burgles (Other Property) Est Val $500 To $5000 By Day
10 Shoplifts (Est Val Under $500)
10 Theft Of Animals (Over $1,000)
10 Shoplifts (Est Val Under $500)
10 Burgles (Other Property) Est Val Under $500 By Day
    10 Reckless Discharge Firearm/Restricted Weapon

    First reaction…
Our kids are out of control;…
    Second thoughts…
Why are the cops even doing this, surely it is an occasion for sitting down with the parents and sorting things out…
And why has policespeak become so weird?
Burgles? not as a verb but a plural? who knows?
Shoplifts? I am grammatically insulted and let’s not go into the firearms charge, too weird for words.
    Then there’s…

    10 Unlawful Takes Bicycle
    10 Unlawfully Carry/Possess Firearm/Res Weapon/Explosives/Ammunition

ISIS, eat yer heart out, Kiwi Kids are coming…
    Must be the Weetbix.

Jesus. I'm scared to look now. I might start shouting things to the rest of the family.

George Kay's interview with Bowie for Rip It Up in Christchurch in 1978, before the show. Pics by Laurence Aberhart.

I'm pleased to say the aberhart pic on the right survived, it sits on my bedroom wall. I hope the left hand one is living somewhere equally loved.

  • Lee Jensen,

Two cents worth - as far as neglected treats go, I've always liked Jump They Say, from Black Tie White Noise, and as is often my circumstance, I saw (rather than heard) it first. Directed by Mark Romanek (who also directed the video for the Bjork penned Madonna song Bedtime Story, and interestingly, the more recent Swifty Shake it Off) apart from the fascinating intertextuality, David looks positively carnivorous, especially in the blue-room-w-mikes vignettes (1:04, 2:24). And the hands, always the dancing hands...

Might I also remind you of The Associates and their fine cover of Boys Keep Swinging (no link, sorry).

Danny John-Jules. He's made a video of him and others working with Bowie on the Labyrinth soundtrack, set to the original, unheard, version of 'Chilly Down', when the song was called 'Wild Things' (it had to be changed for copyright reasons).

Fair few musical connections around Red Dwarf. Actresses for the series included Clare Grogan (lead singer for Altered Images) as Kristine Kochanski in series 1-6, and singer Suzanne Rhatigan (whose album To Hell With Love featured several songs co-written by Craig Charles) as one of the aspects of the GELF ("Camille", series 4).

An MTV interview from '95, interesting in it's own right, but the bits about Giorgio Moroder will particularly amuse Russell:
