  • Islander,

    O? There's another?

  • Matthew Poole,

Her and Garner both reckon Lee's political career is over,

Couldn't happen to a nicer suburb-ist, says I. Good riddance to bad rubbish, really, though she was certainly, err, assisted by the motorway issue (where it's going, not who it's going to keep away :P ). If that's one of National's "high flyers", we're doomed!

As for Shearer, well done that man. Not that there was any significant doubt, but it's still impressive to increase on Helen's lead, in percentage terms if not real ones, and to do it in a by-election. It was National's to lose, and they surely did lose it.

Completely OT but I just read that Chris Knox has had a stroke. Hope he recovers soon.

You really believe that? Sorry, but while Lee's campaign was (to be polite) seriously deficient in all kinds of ways let's not start believing the pre-match hype (hey, why should Garner and Clark have all the strained sports analogies?) The margin should have tighter, but anyone who seriously expects me to believe National could have won it is going to be asked to take a piss test.

though they disagree about Shearer's future.

Well, let's see how he handles having to face some tough questions when he takes an actual policy position that isn't universally popular.

Like most political commentators at the beginning of the campaign a couple of months ago, then. Or like Goff and Shearer tonight acknowledging their own internal polling at the outset showed a tight race. Still, let's not let the facts get in the way of a good defense.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Still, let's not let the facts get in the way of a good defense.

Sacha: For some strange reason, I'm not actually privy to Labour's internal polling or anything else to do with the campaign and I have to see interviews before I have any fraking idea what they're about. That's my working definition of "fact", mate.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Oh, and here's a whacky idea: Politicians aren't entirely candid about their internal polling, and have even been known to encourage perceptions of being the 'underdog' and therefore motivate activists.

And there are plenty of occasions when I wouldn't bet the house on "most political commentators" being within spitting distance of reality.

So, to tiresomely repeat what I actually said: Not a good campaign on National's part, but I never believed Labour was in any danger of losing Mount Albert.

  • Sacha,

Craig, I don't have any privileged access behind the scenes and I apologise if it wasn't clear that I was relaying statements and interviews from the TV3 coverage.

Politicians aren't entirely candid about their internal polling

Those statements about internal polling were made on camera tonight after victory was sealed. Isn't that a bit too late to "motivate activists"? - though it was hardly a novel reported position at the outset that things were close. You didn't need to be in the inner sanctum or catch any of tonight's interviews to know that; it was all over the media and blogosphere a couple of months ago.

Of course if you have some info that most of us didn't get then by all means share. Otherwise is the resisting consensus really worth the effort?

No, but since Goff isn't a Cylon I wouldn't blame him for maximising the yield of nose-moisturing gloat. :)

  • Graeme Edgeler,

Our show was, as you might expect, a quieter affair, but I think we brought out some very interesting stuff on the Bain case...

Caught it last night, Russell - but wondering how you got from a not guilty verdict to the sweeping observation that the jury had decided that Robin was the killer?

Indeed, the jury may well have decided that David probably did it, and was far more likely to have done it that Robin, but that they weren't certain he did, so acquitted. You didn't seem to think so, and nor did most of your panel.

Re the by-election result, the Standard has a humorous camparison of Bill Ralston's political commentary in April and now.

    From The standard,

the media in this country are predominantly left wing in their political sympathies and that is the real reason Melissa Lee lost so badly.

Mr Baiter at his insightful best.

  • Sacha,

Yes, Master Baiter's comments drew an early morning chortle before the caffeine finally wore off. Never cease to be amazed by the sheer hypocrisy about taking responsiblity from these immature Actoids. When good things happen it's all because of their personal "hard work" but when things don't work out it's always someone else to blame. Children, the lot of them, and not to be trusted with real power.

Sure is, because it seems rather obvious to me that while the likes of Duncan Garner are thick as pig shit as nowhere near as useful, he's a thoroughly non-partisan boob. And after finally forcing myself to sit through a whole Q&A, I think I'll stick to pouring hot tea in my crotch the next time I really need Sunday morning pain. Could they rename the show BDS&M in the interests of truth in advertising?

  • Steve Barnes,

It must be really painful going through life full of bitterness and resentment, why do they do it?.
    Actoids that is.
I got verbally abused by one such creature on Thursday night after making my, oh so deep and meaningful, comment about ACT taking all the parking spaces on Back Benches. She was so upset I thought she was going to vomit.

Craig, are you saying Baiter is "non-partisan" or Garner is?

And that's not a bad piece of renaming for a show that often resembles consensual torture.

  • Sacha,

And in related news, a Herald editorial correctly assesses the legitimate influence of a minor player:

The Act Party is in Parliament with the support of fewer than three in 100 New Zealanders. The unfettered enthusiasm with which Hide is pursuing his radical agenda is out of all proportion to his mandate. The Prime Minister should give a sharp tug on his leash and remind him that he is there to find out and give legislative shape to what the public wants.

Garner's an equal opportunity offender when it comes to over-sexed up 'gotcha' stories.

So, could you remind me exactly what electoral mandate the editorial writers of the Herald on Sunday nowadays secured last year? Oh, that's right -- none at all. Therefore, the HoS's editorial chunterings can be safely ignored. Thanks for clearing that up, folks.
