  • Craig Ranapia,

So Craig, rather than talking about Jennifer Hudson and p0rn spammers here, can I just ask for your honest opinion about NZNat banning this guy based on the comments he made?

I wouldn't do it, just as I'd have advised Francis Till not to give The Standard publicity or any grounds to fatuously play free speech martyr.

And I'd also have said that any video posted to YouTube should have the comments disabled and a e-mail address for feedback provided.

BTW, Damien, thought the post was entirely cogent and reasonable - and it's fair comment to say the Nats (or at least one individual) needs to get a little smarter about the nature of the medium. But there is a reason I don't visit YouTube to read the comments - because the crap/quality ratio is near 100:0.

  • Craig Ranapia,

And just to be trivial for a moment:

coming back via the Dowse to view the Philip Treacy hats (I was bored, but, then, I am a boy …).

Aaargh... if you said you were going, I'd have given you some money to pick me up a copy of the catalogue. Hats may be boring, but Isabella Blow - who was a mentor/muse to some rather intriguing people in the British fashion scene like Treacy and Alexander McQueen - was anything but. The Brits may have lost the Empire, but they can still produce world-beating eccentrics.

  • kmont,

Just because there is a lot of bullshit in the comments section of youtube doesn't really take away from Damion's point.

And I understand anyone who uploads video to YouTube has to the option of disabling comments entirely - would that also be 'crushing speech'?

But they didn't turn them off so that is not really the point either, I don't think that many people here would disagree that on your own site you can moderate how you see fit and no-one has an inalienable human right to post comments. The point seems to be if you try to use social media for political purposes and fling the door of the comments section wide open (which on youtube is a bit nuts for the reasons you have stated) you will look like a jackarse if you "moderate" those who disagree with you in this manner.
If just looks naff. You would think with the number of people who seem to be enrolled in "Digital Media" type courses these days that someone would be able to give some good advise.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

YouTube have recently brought in some new features to the comments. If you're logged in, you can give a comment the thumbs up or thumbs down - enough thumbs down and the comment isn't displayed in full. And if there's a spam comment, you can also mark it as spam.

  • kmont,

Robyn that is interesting. Kind of like a "hey dick, shut up" comment moderation system.

    But, but, that's The Brand.

Heh... I'm sure YouTube would say they're enhancing the interactivity of the YouTube experience in response to feedback from the user community.

I think that's a sign of a good community, when it doesn't always need a moderator to shut out someone who's not adding anything of value. I mean here on PA, there are always some lively debates, and I'd like to think that different opinions are often encouraged, but if anyone's being a straight-out douche, they do get told where to go.

  • kmont,

Contraire dick is just a given, but of course. See that shows that you know the medium (if that is the right term?) unlike whoever had the bright idea of utilising youtube for political broadcasts. Moderating people who are not even up to the standards of arse hattery that a 13 year old can muster up........
That makes you look like an very naff dick.

My favourite YouTube contraire dick comments are the ones that start with "sorry", trying to disguise it as constructive criticism.

"Sorry, but I'm just not sure what you were trying to show us. All I saw was a kitten chasing a toy mouse."

I have been picking up Craig Ranapia's lovely turn of phrase but unfortunately not his impressive spelling under pressure ; )

Spelling is a fascist hegemonic construct imposed on the oppressed by bourgeois enablers! So there! :)

Thanks Craig, perhaps I am better cut out to be an activist than hang around in a place which has more than its fair share of journalists and pedants.

Straight White Man, everything is your fault. Now I have to go construct an elegantly paranoid three minute rave about how the Booker Prize judges are incompetent to judge graffiti on a toilet wall. A black day for New Zealand literature, I'm depressed and gutted wah wah...

You didn't expect anything else, did you?

They gave a Booker to The Bone People.

Ouch. I'm going to steal that, and don't expect attribution or actual money. :) Still, you've got to love a country where when it comes to dealing with disappointment: Arty-Farties 1; Rugby-Heads nil.
