  • Paul Litterick,

There was a story on Morning Report this morning that annoyed me (podcast) - some Southern mayors rejected Statistics NZ's forecast of population decline in Southland. One mayor said it was the work of someone in Wellington who can't get his sums right; better than that, the forecast was condemned for relying on population trends.

I am more than a bit irritated that the report did not ask for the views of Statistics NZ. I expect more of NatRad than this sort of anti-scientific reporting.

I am more inclined to believe Statistics NZ, with their statistics, than the mayors, with their anecdotes. I feel much the same about Geoff and Robbie's argument.

  • Kyle Matthews,

I'm struck by the assumption that some high art can justly be funded and some can't.

Paintings are, apparently, all good. Our national collection is housed at Te Papa, which cost $300 million (or 60 years' operating budget for Concert FM) to build, and $36 million annual to run. And that's just one public gallery/museum.

But Te Papa charges entrance fees for some of its exhibitions.

And it's got sponsorship all over it. So that's an argument for Concert selling advertising/sponsorship.

Concert FM receives $1 (or 2%) of the roughly $50 per capita in total that goes into public broadcasting schemes in New Zealand.

It also attracts about 5% of the radio audience in any given week.

I think that might be a maths fail Russell.

I presume you've taken 2% of the total broadcasting budget (including TV), and then compared it to the % of radio listeners.

A fairer comparison would be concert gets X% of the government funding that goes towards radio, and gets Y% of listeners.

  • andin,

My six year old wouldn't know what a radio was or how to turn it on and tune it but he can hook up the playstation by himself at 6.30 in the morning

There could be many reasons for that, that's right, the simplest things sometimes take the longest explanation. And then the quality of the observational discourse will definitely be variable.
But I'm sure you don wanna subject your kid to that.

404 on your Media Studies link, Geoff. You need to take the public address part of the URL out.

Apologies for being such a klutz. I just did the old double square brackets thing. If I can't fix it, I guess people can do a cut-and-paste if they want to access the website. But they should look at the offerings of other unis too.

  • Robbie Siataga,

I added a turntable to my stereo system, just so my children could hear what vinyl sounded like.

I had to sell my technics 1210 for parts as the littlies thought it was a merry go round.

Does radio still do sunday morning kid stories ? Bad jelly the witch and Flick the little fire engine...those were the days *sigh* now we do cartoons. Weird, but i just realised we dont have a radio as such in the house and where we live, I'm not even sure we get reception.

The thing that kills me about introducing the kids to radio is the ads. The music and whatever else is just the filler between the ads that actually pays the bills. We always mute the ads on TV.

Thanx for the TKI hookup. I just downloaded the pdf from here
    http://seniorsecondary.tki.org.nz/Social-sciences/Media-studies
and found out a lot of it i've already done/do in practical form :)

  • Alien Lizard (anag),

    the joys of radio...

try short wave - hours of fun - other countries, satellites, the big bang background noise!
plus it is a great for showing the effects of personal and other electromagnetic fields...
...and if you can get old valve radio with a tuning valve - they're fun too...

Hell even as an off channel pink noise generator radio is pretty relaxing...

Hmmm...I wonder why no ones expanded the market for blipverts aimed at children and adults with limited attention span ?

I believe NatRad still does Weekend Storytime, and last time I checked bFM also had a kids' show on Sundays.

Weird, but i just realised we dont have a radio as such in the house and where we live, I'm not even sure we get reception.

You probably do for NatRad (AM if nothing else) but you could always stream or podcast if you've go decent broadband and speakers?

Duplication of services kind of defeats the purpose really ?

  • Ross Mason,

Having had a quick look at the legislation “Radio New Zealand Act 1995” and the Bill before the house ” Radio New Zealand Amendment Bill 30-1 (2009), Government Bill” it seems the recent govt announcements are a bit of posturing for some upcoming discussion of the RNZ amendment.

The amendment section 8A (2) and (3) make interesting reading. “Shall” has been replaced by “must”. It spells out “Commercial Free” in 8 (1).

Does “must” mean unavoidable? So if they unavoidably fail to meet the charter, reading 8A (3) suggests that if RNZ cannot fulfil the charter then it does not have to act in a “financially responsible manner”.

Was the amendment sorted by the previous Government and are the shinannigans a parry at the Commercial Free clause??

    Duplication of services...

Que? So just hardbacks, no paperbacks or e-readers then?
surely it is a singularity of content and diversity of delivery to accommodate various retrieval systems...

...kind of defeats the purpose really?

and what do you perceive as the purpose?
delivery of content to the most people is the purpose I'd have thought...

The Arrrgh Complex • Since Jan 2010 • 158 posts Report Reply

  • Robbie Siataga,

The purpose is to widen the demographic and catchment area to make the service seem more relevent and attractive for continuing sponsorship without updating the content, at the risk of losing your primary delivery mechanism.

ie..if more people are going to hear the content on a clickback from the net from a wider coverage area then why bother broadcasting it on radio in the first place ?

but yeah good point on hardbacks. Why bother ? Just get the shit out on paperback and save the cost of prettying it up for poxy first edition collectors. Or just do e books off subscription and save the environmental cost of printing on paper :)

  • Tom Ackroyd,

Sorry Robbie, after reading everything you've written and then your comment about ads on the radio, my mind is still boggling. If you don't like ads, then who pays? I know you think taxpayer money shouldn't pay for Concert because you think it's an irrelevant and elitist niche station, but who will pay for what you want to listen to?

There's a "bygone" setting on those to listen to the cricket on Radio 3 in 1976.

  • Sam F,

Duplication of services kind of defeats the purpose really ?

I don't suppose you were saying this at the video store when they offered (for a time) both VHS and DVDs of the same films? :)

I listen both via radio and podcasts, at very different times and places, so although the content might be the same I certainly don't perceive the service as identical.

If you were talking about a commercial broadcaster trying to reach the most ears for the less dollars, then it might perhaps 'defeat the purpose' to have multiple means of distribution. For a public service broadcaster aiming to deliver quality local content to as many people as possible, full stop? Not so much.

There are music channels on Sky & Freeview in digital stereo thru a good DAC Mmmmm
Tuning on a dial was an artform in WW2.

I dont listen to radio at all and if it takes the loss of advertisers to kill off radio then i imagine we'll be looking at subscription based net broadcasts much like where newspapers are heading with their on line content in answer to decreasing readerships.

In paying my isp provider i'm sort of paying for what i want to listen to and maybe thats where the whole copyright thing is heading. A modest hike to kickback to apra in answer to loss of artist income from piracy and decreased royalites due to less advertisers.

As for what i listen to.I tend to download DJ mixsets mostly and don't mind suffering the odd clickthru or banner ad as i just set it to download and walk away to come back and listen at leisure.

But then again I'm not a slave to any rigid work timetable whereby its convenient to tune in while negotitating the morning and afternoon traffic jam as part of some daily ritual.

I find radio jocks to be like preachers, having to be all that all the time in saying the same shit to keep the faithful tuned in. The whole fakeness of being controversial or jovial all the time is just tiresome.
