Hard News: Crowdsourcing journalism, with a party

  • Rich of Observationz,

    That's an awesome idea.

Maybe we could have a "don't buy a paper day" where people donated the money saved to real journalists?

  • Brent Jackson,

Heh, I've be doing "Don't buy a paper all year" for years now.

Unfortunately, I've already got 3 other things on on 13-12-11, so I won't be able to make it. I will throw some dollars in the pot though. I've harped on about how piss poor journalism is in New Zealand, so I'd better put some money where my mouth is (or somesuch).

    Thank you Jon.

Ditto. And I browse the usual news sites while running NoScript. Pity I won't be able to be up north for the party.

In the long run, a tip jar model could work out for institutions like RadioNZ if done right. It seems to work somewhat for NPR in the States.

Only if you want to listen to lists of their sponsors on a very frequent basis and regular pledge drives, where they ask you to contribute every. three. minutes. for a week. More than once a year. PBS suffers from the same problems.

Trust me, the comparative pittance our government spends on Radio NZ is *well* worth the service we get. You can run a public radio service by donation, but it's just not as good. We have something special. Let's not preemptively abandon it.

  • Jose Barbosa,

Just a note to say thanks to everyone who's donated so far.

I'm slowly posting auction items on the blog as we receive them. We can take email bids if you can't be there in person, just check gonebyxmas.tumblr.com

    Sweet.

Was listening to this about a group of independent investigative journalists in Britain and wondering if there was any openings for this in NZ...
