  • Ian Dalziel,

    The wags of sin?
I've been trying to find out how much John Key has donated to National over the years - so far I can only find $30,000 back in 2008
Surely when he first arrived on the scene early 2001/2002 he had his chequebook out?
Otherwise why was he rushed to the front of the queue, with no real political experience behind him?

I also found this interesting treatise in the NZ Journal of Media Studies on 'Brand Key'

‘What then is the meaning of John Key?’
He means both nothing and everything, like so many shopping malls around the globe that belong everywhere and nowhere. He means the hegemony of brutal capitalism.

Certainly more straightforward than fellow PR flack Patrick Smellie's faux fessing up, complete with a weaseling passive-aggressive swipe at Hager.

  • Alfie,

Judith Collins has put her foot in her mouth again. Last night she told a Radio NZ journalist

I have been cleared by the Privacy Commissioner...

But that wasn't the truth and this morning she's been forced to flip once again.

Under-pressure Justice Minister Judith Collins has had to backtrack this morning, after mistakenly saying the Privacy Commissioner had cleared her of wrong-doing in giving the details of a public servant to Whale Oil blogger Cameron Slater.

But Privacy Commissioner John Edwards did no such thing, and suggested that he would investigate if the public servant in question, Internal Affairs official Simon Pleasants, laid a complaint.

RNZ has spoken with Simon Pleasants who is keeping his head down and will not lay a complaint. You can hardly blame him, given the abuse he has already suffered at the hands of the Nats' blacks ops brigade.

    Statement from the Privacy Commissioner

Espiner w. Bill English on RNZ this morning on this was... interesting...

Hmmm, Espiner seems to have remembered what a journalist's job is. I wonder if English will refuse to talk to him again. I note Key only seems to be talking to
    Ferguson these days.

  • nzlemming,

Akshully, English missed a great opportunity to say "Well, personally, I'm really sorry that any public servant might receive a death threat. They're not elected and don't choose to be in the spotlight. I hope Mr Pleasants is not permanently scarred by his experience. I want to say further that I deplore Mr Slater's website and the uses he's put it to over the years. There's no place for that in New Zealand politics."

I mean, where's Espiner going to go from there? A huge amount of the furore would die away. But that would require leadership, rather than "media management". Wankers.

Yeah, it's strange. I may be partisan -- though I'm trying to not be -- the day before w David Cunliffe he was just obnoxious and silly.

But that would require leadership, rather than “media management”.

I'm gasping, dying to detect some leadership from our "leaders".

  • Alfie,

Slater is attempting to take the heat off the Nats' black ops with a temporary diversion.

Whaleoil blogger Cameron Slater has complained to police over Nicky Hager's Dirty Politics.

The details of the allegations were not known but police confirmed that Slater had laid a complaint.

Counties Manukau Police Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said a complaint had been received "which will be investigated in accordance with standard procedure".

"As it's an active investigation, police won't be making further comment," he said.

My instinct tells me the complaint will be withdrawn soon after the election. If not, then Slater, Lusk, Farrar, Williams et al might be called to give evidence which could provide yet further proof of their dastardly conduct.

Just like Mark Mitchell, whose non-action was featured prominently on Stuff. Taken at face value, for no good reason.

How stubbornly impervious to understanding does a journalist (editor?) have to be, not to grasp when they are being played, when the playing manual has just been published for them to read in bite-sized chunks? Mitchell will "consider" legal action ... which means nothing. At all. He is running down the clock, an old and predictable tactic.

I despair, I really do. They might as well be wearing T-shirts saying "See what I did there?".

  • Alfie,

It's another bad day for Judith Collins.

The Privacy Commissioner is "assessing" a complaint from Bronwyn Pullar against his boss, Judith Collins. The complaint alleges that Collins supplied confidential information to Slater which led to him accusing Pullar and Boag of blackmail on his blog.

Bronwyn Pullar filed her complaint after reading in Nicky Hager's Dirty Politics claims of Slater giving a friend - a former sex worker - false details about Pullar that the blogger said he got after speaking to Collins.

If Slater's statements to the former prostitute as detailed in the book are correct, Collins could face serious trouble for leaking Pullar's name and false allegations of extortion against her before the minister had received any final written reports from her ministry

Remind me again... what comes after 'Final, final, FINAL warning'?

    Judith's bad day gets worse?

How does she intend to pay that one back double? I guess we'll find out soon if there was any truth to the rumours that she "has something over Key".

  • Alfie,

The Herald is reporting a new revelation about our minister of Injustice.

Collins' resignation comes after evidence emerged in the past 24 hours of her role in moves to discredit former SFO boss Adam Feeley.

  • Angela Hart, in reply to Alfie,

    What's that evidence, I wonder?
There has been marked reluctance to act on Judith Collins.
The lack of prompt and appropriate action has done a lot of damage to brand Key.
If she is going to resign now that could mean less media attention to the "Dirty Politics" evidence but much will depend on Collin's, Slater's and Farrar's reactions. Revenge is a dish best served cold, or so they say.
