  • Rosemary McDonald, in reply to John Farrell,

    Please?

What the hell is "social capital"?

    Signed,

  • John Farrell,

    I think this explains it : http://www.changetheflag.nz/take_action

Note how they adopt the trappings of a genuine movement - but the thing smells like a PR stunt.

    Is this astroturfing?

    Well, in the context of the leader board - the website administrator is IMO doing a disservice to the concept of social capital. This is the first big statement/study on it in the US;

    http://bowlingalone.com/

There are two types of social capital (in theory) - bonding and bridging capital. The Student Army being an example of bonding capital that arose out of the EQ disaster - and subsequently bridging capital was observed when the Farmy Army and other social/voluntary organisations joined together under one administrative/action collective.

it is as 'independent' as the anti-MMP campaign and the Taxpayers Onion, both featuring the charming Jordan 'throw rocks at them' Williams of Dirty Politics fame.

  • simon g,

Both the Herald and Stuff have now picked up the PM Twitter story - and in the process nicely illustrate how the spin war is won.

In both stories they are at pains to state - repeatedly - that "Key as PM" is a different creature from "Key as National".

Nobody with an ounce of sense believes this, but it's now officially a Thing, simply because last year Key insisted, on numerous occasions when he got into trouble, that it was a Thing.

First the journalists laughed, and now ... they give up and join in.

  • Rosemary McDonald,

Yep, they certainly went to great pains to explain the key/juggling hats thing.

In case we got it wrong....

This has gone from funny, to not funny at all, back to funny again.

From the ridiculous to the sublime.

Their editors are the ones to hold accountable for swallowing spin and asking for another helping. Gutless creatures.

    Who is Gwynn Compton ?
According to Claire Trevett of the NZ Herald :

Gwynn Compton works for Mr Key in his capacity as National Party leader…

She goes on to say :

Mr Compton has since locked his Twitter account and removed any reference to Mr Key’s office from his LinkedIn profile.

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister said Mr Compton’s role in the National Leader’s Office involved helping the National Party and its MPs, including the leader, with their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

I wonder if he may be Jason Ede’s replacement ?

    Garrick Tremain again

It's probably close to 20 years since Tremain drew Jim Bolger leading a hospital patient by a ring through his nose towards a "debate" on NZ becoming a republic, with the caption "I think you'll find this interesting". Plus ca change.

This piece from Sciblogs about an article in North and South about Carrick Graham and attacks on public health scientists may have been already posted but worth reading again. Dirty Politics alive and well.

  • Alfie,

It just gets sillier. The Auditor-General's office has decided that they won't investigate Katherine Rich's conflict of interest in her dual roles as chief executive of the Food and Grocery Council and board member of the Health Promotion Agency. Or for that matter, her role in the Dirty Politics scandal.

Nothing to see here folks. Moving right along.

If the OAG won't investigate, who will? We can't just sit on the sidelines about this.

  • Paul Campbell,

having watched the OAG trip around the various pokie scandals (like the TTCF), and other financial, umm, irregularities here in Dunedin and mostly just do nothing I can't decide whether they're being nobbled, have way too few resources or just plain don't care. Maybe it's a case of "don't rock the boat someone might notice us"

It's almost like we need a 4th branch of government - a "keeps government honest" branch that would be independant, and would include things like the ombudman's office, oia requests, the investigative branch (and maybe more) of the OAG, - and someone who does a general ongoing review to see if government departments are fufilling their legal requirements etc etc - at the moment there are a whole bunch of things that mere citizens have no standing in - you have to persuade the OAG to investigate and then prosecute

    Dirty politics issues are more appropriately investigated by the Ombudsman's office - as many of the dirty tricks related to abuses of the Official Information Act. Dame Beverley said this last year when it all broke;

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11327328

She has begun that review. Perhaps the OAG has an understanding of what she has in mind. The three Offices of Parliament (these two + the PCE) are all pretty fed up with this government's disrespect for the constitution role their offices hold.

Apparently he is beyond unrepentant in the article - reckons his conduct will get worse. This is what happens if we let them get away with it.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Now this takes the cake. National will get your vote

The colour blue is used to illustrate desirable behaviour such as achievement and self-actualisation, whereas red and green represent negative behaviours like dependence,

    Subliminal or what?

Half a million dollars worth of subliminal indoctrination. Yet more wasted government money. Honestly... what planet are these people on?

    Wait... I know the answer!
