  • Islander,

"Dancing With Beelzebub" is not even a 'good read' in the danbrownish sense....

What is written - lasts much longer than what is oral, and, just sometimes- records what the oral was, from the writer's hear-point (I refer interested people to the journals of John Boultbee for an ear-insight to what spoken southern Maori probably sounded like.)

  • conseismal,

parenthetically, why should anyone be automatically interested in what Maori 'sounded like'? Is it not at least as astonishing trying to imagine what the first 'kiwi' sounded 'like'? or, much more to the point, why he sounded the way he did, even more to the point, why anybody iterated the mad new sounds that he made? These are events, it seems to me, way more worthy of consideration than some kind of shot at .."ear-insight" HELLO? (usa)

  • Joe Wylie,

I reckon it's only a matter of time until Laws has a Jimmy Swaggart / Jimmy Baker day of reckoning. Someone should go through his rubbish. I bet it's a goldmine of credibility destroying tidbits.

Um - isn't that what this thread is largely about? It's not as if he provides the world with anything much else to feed its morbid fascination with the grotesque.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

On the other hand, speaking of PA social type things, it's the holidays coming up and I have a hankering to see my PA buddies at a certain neighbourhood bar. With rum. Email me if you too have this hankering.

Oh Jackie, wish I could :( Wont be back until October. London is a bit far to get to the pub from. Tell you what, Cutty Sark Pub in Greenwich is mighty perdy and oh so comfortable if you wanna meet me there one night next week. We could sit outside and look across the water at the 02 Dome.:)

Thanks to 1080 there's not the same abundance of roadkill. And now that hubcaps are made of plastic there's a lack of handy roasting dishes.

  • Cecelia,

A more restrained article from Laws - just the normal beneficiary bashing and no mention of himself. BUT I can't help thinking there's a sub-text - it was the parents wot did it - they made the "kiddies" challenge my authoritai.

Also: Herald - the email exchange.

    Giovanni, you were right!

Just read the Herald on Sunday account and Laws has turned the whole exchange into a positive. It will play even better in Wanganui. Own goal, Russell.

Where does he turn it to his advantage? By saying he was sick of non-residents expressing their opinion?

And for what it's worth I emailed Laws a week ago because of his SST article - I tried to be rational but I'm not the best of writers - anyway I got back the rudest response I've ever received - might not sound bad to you but ... It was "Bye bye crazy lady"

  • Sacha,

Pretty sure his council must have standards for communication from their email addreses. I'd be complaining there.

  • Jason Lea,

breaking news! The original document from the founding of W*anganui has been found. After examination by electron microscope it can be revealed that there was no 'H'.

The original spelling was WI-IANGANUI but over the years the ink smudged into the shape of an 'H'.

Soon after the town was run by a team of mathematicians that felt compelled to subtract the second 'I' from the first, leading to the spelling W0ANGANUI (I-I = 0) for a short time. The zero was eventually dropped altogether because it looked stupid.

  • Emily Zorn,

I apologise, Cecelia. But to answer your question, it is as Giovanni oroginally said: in Wanganui telling some outsider that they are a dickhead because they've called hs entire city a bunch of ignorant hillbilly hicks - do you really think that would have the locals rooting for anyone other than Laws?
