Sorry to pile it on, but you'd have loved Major Lazer too.

  • bob daktari,

After a very enjoyable BDO I'm really looking forward to Laneway(s)... bit gutted (selfishly so) the Friends and Family has moved - was so the mint spot before the late comers arrived last year for a beer enjoying Street Chant et al on the big stage - for them going there's a raised bit of grass that allows good sight and hearing of the stage... get closer if you want the real deal though

Yeah, me too, but for the average punter it's a very good change.

totally good for the punters and the change won't hurt us spoilt ones either. Them that sit all day in such areas waste space being put near the music

  • Mark Thomas,

(There was also a queue to withdraw cash via Eft-Pos, but I feel nothing for those people, because they are frankly stupid. Festival 101, people.)

In 2014? Surely eftpos or even tap'n'go is the standard these days. Is it a bandwidth issue?

Was that only Chow Town? Didn't seem to work very well from what I've heard.

Also, I forgot to note in the post that a Member of Parliament is on the Thunderdome bill. 6.30pm, DJ Jacinda Ardern.

Yep just Chow Town. Great food, great value too. Why would you get a dirty battered sausage when you could have amazing pork buns, ribs, tacos, cheesecake etc for the same price? I hope Chow Town becomes a permanent BDO fixture. Some local NZ craft beer would be nice too, though I imagine that is a sponsorship money type of issue.

RE: Tokens - I just didn't get why individual vendors couldn't use eftpos or that paywave magical thing. I love paywave

  • Alan Perrott,

just like to share my good charity shop vinyl fortunes this week - was down in Hamilton and managed a quick trawl.

all these 45s were punts, but at only $1 why wouldn't you?

The Atlantics, Goldfinger - Oz instrumental surf band goes Bond

The Seashells, (The Best Part Of) Breaking Up - was dubious about this one - quaint name and well, the Ronettes - but bloody nora

Sid Ramin, Stiletto - title track to spy film of the same name with big drums, hooky keyboards and horns

Jeff Beck with Rod Stewart, Morning Dew - widely covered but this stands up nicely. plus: wah wah

  • Rageaholic,

Teething problems were inevitable and I am sure the BDO will grow into the new venue. Mobility between areas and queues were a nightmare at the first few BDOs I went to at Mt Smart, but by the last few it was a well oiled machine (not even including the last one that no one, including me, went to). I hope they persevere with Western Springs, it sounds like it was a delightful venue. But I really really don't want to queue 2 hours for the loo!

(Full disclosure: I did not attend the BDO this year due to illness, and I'm a little bit glad that Blur cancelled because it meant I could get a refund on my ticket and also I didn't miss Blur. Next year though!)

  • BlairMacca,

I realise this might be going against the grain here, but I was there for Pearl Jam and they were amazing. Great set. I mainly stayed in the main arena as the queues getting in there early on put me off venturing far. The Hives were fantastic fun. Arcade fire were great. Beady Eye was there for a pay cheque.
All in all a good day and a pretty good setup, except for the queues. WOuld have been interesting to see how Blur would ahve fitted in on the bill, if I think they were meant to play the lakeside stage, that would have been more than interesting to see the crush entering and exiting.

No, they were definitely down for the Aroha/Tamaki stages. If they'd played immediately before or after Snoop Dogg it would have made for quite an evening lineup on those stages.

I had heard they were scheduled before Arcade Fire?

  • Wendy Stewart,

We really enjoyed the new venue but were disappointed to come home with all our cash because the queues just weren't worth it. Did go to Chow Town at 8 o'clock, no queues, tokens easy as and food was divine. Also had a bit of a panic attack on the sardine filled bridge especially when some drunken fool tried to push ahead, thanks to the big fella next to me he was soon stepped down. Arcade Fire, SJD and Major Lazer highlights of the day.

Really? The good, fun, non-concrete-bunker stages? (If you'll all just excuse me for a moment: WAAAAAAHHHHHH DAMON ALBARN YOU ARE A DOUCHE AND CLEARLY CALLED THIS OFF SO YOU COULD PROMOTE YOUR SOLO ALBUM AND I HAVE A GIANT SAD.)

OTOH, that slow-roasted pork muffaletta in Chow Town was the *business*.

  • Andrew C,

had a blast with Major Lazer.

I stuck around and tried, I really really did try, but I guess I just don't get this type of music delivery. A song/clip starts, you get started grooving, and then it stops and they talk for a bit, then it repeats. I don't know for certain, but it felt like you never got more than 30secs actual music at a time. Excuse my musical ignorance, but is this a common style of delivery or peculiar to Major Lazer?

    Great food, great value too.

Eventually it was. We got screwed by going there way early and paid $15 for the pork ribs - which became $6 later in the day when they figured out there were only so many suckers out there. I'm pretty easy with getting ripped of at events, its just part of it, but I did look twice when my $15 ribs turned up to make sure they hadn't forgotten to give me part of it.

And I'll repeat an earlier comment because I think they deserve the props - the meatball grinders ruled.

And in Lyttelton tomorrow, Friday 24th, there's a (off to US) farewell to Flora (Knight, of the Eastern and varied fiddle accompaniment to various others); featuring Flora herself of course plus others like Delaney Davidson, The Eastern, Marlon Williams and Hannah Harding,

Not quite the Big Day Out or Laneways down south but lots of little days out this week: caught Flora last night at the Porthole in Lyttelton last night, chipping in with Hannah giving new life to the Carter Family! Flora has also at times played with Nadia Reid, who currently is in Chch this week providing musical interludes to the buskers, Nadia's set includes a stunning version of M Jackson's Billie Jean (quite unrecognisable from the original). Well worth catching (in Start-Up Mall). She's on until Sunday, adding string bass to her acoustic guitar from tomorrow (Friday).
