  • Russell Brown,

Also, anyone who admired that lovely man DJ Big Matt may care to pop along to a little show marking five years since his passing. Sunday from 5.30, Ponsonby Social Club.

Huzzah! The legendary video of the White Stripes playing at Freeman's Bay Primary School in 2003 is going to be screened in Auckland next week.

  • Jan Farr,

Numbers at Nambassa, Russell: - I was there and topless (you drew more attention if you weren't) - and there were certainly thousands of people there. I seem to remember hearing that there were 70,000. In an enormous and tightly packed space, we were so far away from the stage at the Split Enz concert that we could barely see the band - the lighting was wonderful though and so was the sound.

Devo, a winery act... my 13-year-old self just turned in his velcro-and-domes geometric shirt. Speaking of younger selves: I might just have to pop in to PSC on Sunday for a wee dram to say, I dunno, "thanks" to Big Matt for Being There, back in the day.

Nambassa. 1929 Austin 16/6. Tent. Togs. Tan. Swimming and rescuing two people in jeans outside the breakers. Nutters. There was a drowning just after we left the beach.
Even the girlfriend (now wife) went topless. Surprised!

You missed one. Little River Band.

  • Robin,

Interesting Nambassa video and love the Scratch 22 remix.

... the banality of the Hare Krishna acting-out. I’m quite partial to some spiritual music, but Hare Krisha only ever had one song. And it’s rubbish.

And this comment isn't banal? I enjoy the Hare Krishna mantra, and they actually have many other songs. I think the Hare Krishnas are cool: invariably friendly and calm.

Anyway, here's a more positive contribution which the Nambassa vid reminded me of:

Fair enough. My brief experience back in the day with a couple of male members is that they were overbearing dicks.

That Suren Unka sure is some nice business. But WTF with this The Audience bullshit that you can only log in to download/vote etc with Fbook etc? That is a bunch of arse... restrictive and counter-productive.

And it's a fcken app. So it broadcasts whatever it is you're doing with it too.

    Muppets.

I guess the theory was that letting people log in with an existing profile was a lower barrier to entry. I just registered with my Twitter deets. You could suggest they build a separate registration system.

Ugh. Didn't know that. Doesn't happen with Twitter. You could just register a Twitter account and never use it, I guess.

Only thing I recall about Nambassa was the outraged first-hand account from a righteous punkette of Living Force's set: "20,000 guys all dancing with their dicks flopping. It was like the fucking Nuremberg rally!"

  • Roger Lacey,

I went to Nambassa the year before when Skyhooks headlined. I went along after seeing a poster at the Island of Real Cafe in Airedale St.
The venue was perfect with the natural arena, surf beach and waterfall to wash off after. I also remember Living Force were there too, a Hare Krishna influenced band with an amazing lead guitarist. They put out an LP which I no longer have.

  • Peter Darlington,

My Friday recommendations are the album Hierlooms by Dave Aju. Funk, house and electronic niceness, He constructed it from his jazz player dad's basement tapes of unreleased music. It's a joy to behold and my current favourite tune off it is "Until Then"

Also, everyone needs to check out the John Lydon Capital Radio show from 1977 where Johnny plays favourites. It's available on Simon Grigg's Extended Play site and it is awesome.

Sometimes we really need a “like” button here on PAS!

Re: hare krishnas: I’ve certainly been wildly irritated by some of their proselytisers on the street, especially when I’ve had places to be and they’ve been all determinedly serene at me.

But they have my eternal gratitude for the amazingly wonderful food they dish up, either free or for a nominal charge. For years when I was a poor student I ate their $3 all-you-can-eat lunches, of a tasty vegetable curry and rice, plus halva for pudding. This and all their Food for Life initiatives I think are fantastic. I wish all religious groups had such a practical attitude to helping people.

  • TracyMac, in reply to Lilith __,

They certainly charge like wounded bulls in their restaurants now (for the quality and range of food), although I did like the $2 all you can eat jobbies at uni 20 years ago.

However, they really aren't so calm if you tell them "no", you are not going to give them a donation for those books they try to push off on you. And what makes it worse is the trend they have for going in mufti to do their proselytising (not the Friday evening danceabout). I still don't think much of the Sallies, but at least they're honest.

And, oh yeah, yet another gay-hating religion. Meh.
