  • Lx,

__Actually, a fuck of a lot taken. Obvs.__

That's your choice. I'm going to leave this topic alone.

Was that a sorry I heard there? Seriously, we're waaaay more sick of saying it than you are of hearing it. But there's a reason we keep having to say it (for the past 40 years!) and there's a wealth of evidence to support our reasons for doing so.

    So how about just don't?

  • Craig Ranapia,

And this is a serious question: Has anyone come across any empirical evidence that political junk mail actually works? I know people who've been swayed by good old school 'kiss every hand, shake every baby' personal contact with a candidate, but junk mail? Not so much -- it either goes in the recycle bin unread, or just annoys people.

  • Caleb D'Anvers,

Now would be a good time to introduce laws prohibiting cross-media ownership.

To me, the failure to do this has been one of the more glaring shoot-self-in-foot aspects of Labour's time in Government. If they were at all serious, they would have bought out the Herald and the Listener long ago and set them up under Guardian-style non-profit trust arrangements. And why didn't they buy back the Radio Network? Labour's shown an extraordinary naivete about the extent to which a monopolistic, privately owned news-media can dictate the terms of public discourse.

What would Harry Holland or Peter Fraser made of Labour's touching faith in the power of markets to deliver equable political coverage?

Hey, there's always the low pleasure afforded by drunkenly annotating it and sending it back to the party concerned. This can be especially rewarding with ACT pamphlets, because there are usually lots of grammatical and spelling errors to point out.

  • BenWilson,

What Clark is trying to do now is send a signal to NZ First voters not to waste their vote and to tick Labour if they want to avoid National getting in.

NZ First Voters and Labour voters. Do the twain ever meet?

Craig, I have my recycling bin directly under my mailbox. I hate double handling. I only dip in if I need to start a fire.

  • Hadyn Green,

Oh are we talking political junk mail? (__can't be bothered going back over the last few pages__)

Because today when I got home in my "no junk mail" letterbox there were three political pamphlets, a harcourts ad, and two religious pamphlets. Christians are as bad as the rest.

I'll come clean: when I canvas for political material, I ignore "junk mail" signs because frankly I don't think that political material is junk. I do the same when I maildrop advertising for my son's school's events. If the homeowner happens to be stationed by, I'll ask them first and in ten years and dozens such conversations I've yet to encounter anybody telling me that they thought it was, in fact, junk I was trying to peddle.

The "No circulars" sign, now that's a bastard. Or the "addressed mail only". Although my favourite is "No bad news".

Giovanni, how about: addressed mail, which contains information specifically for the addressee that I need to retain and/or act on

Basically, I want to choose what paper I pay to dispose of. If you want to communicate, use a billboard, hand out leaflets politely in the street or something

  • BenWilson,

While I don't approve of junk mail, it's gotta be one of life's smallest concerns. It's a hundred times less hassle than people coming to the door or calling on the phone, so I'd really rather get the junk. And leaflets cause sooo much litter.

No circulars and addressed mail only I don't ping at all, I probably didn't make it sufficiently clear earlier.

As Hell Pizza will probably be re-animating them sometime soon we just might get the answer to that, except they'll likely be too busy pimping fast food.

  • Grant McDougall,

Winston will be missed for his antics, and he's definitely achieved far more for seniors than anyone else would ever even have tried

I'm loath to admit this, but he's not only done that, but has been, in all fairness, a very, good, solid, competent Minister of Foreign Affairs. But of course he's shot himself in the foot with the whole Owen Glen fiasco.

Anyway watch the Clark v Key debate on TV3 tonight ? Clark was on autopilot with snatches of sparkiness, Key fairly staid.

I thought the best comment came from Linda Clark while they were wrapping up: the swing to Nataional will be bigger than predicted and what the Maori Party does won't be relevant.

i'm not one to ever criticise peters...

but aren't the people praising his efforts as minister of foreign affairs (and racing of course, let's not forget that) forgetting the stirling work goff has done as minister of trade?

i'd be curious to hear which portfolio people think has contributed more to nzl over the last three years.

I'd say it's actually a very tough call. Goff's done a stellar job on the FTA with China (which is actually very, very favourable to NZ, especially when considering what it could've looked like), but Winston's done wonders for our relationship with the US. It was thawing before, but he's turned a hair dryer onto things.

In terms of the future, it's hard to say. My views on us trying to get an FTA with the US are no secret, and that's going to be the next big step for us. There are few things that are foreseeable internationally that would have the same impact.

C'mon Che; Winston's performances at various All Black victories (although strangely absent in Cardiff) over the last 3 years has been simply superb.

My personal favourite was early on in his tenure when he was there on Tana's shoulder after we won the Grand Slam in 2005.

    How early in his tenure?

Less than a week after he turned his back on the "No Baubles" line and took up his new noble posting.

    Bless.

Oh, God.. I could have written the spin from the Kiwibuggers and Sub-Standardistas for them, but let's get real. They both clung to their talking points for girm death, and I'll give John Campbell one cheer for embarking on a Quixotic quest to try and knock them off balance enough to say something, anything, meaningful.

As for the expert panel: Whatever Jenni MacManus is on, I want a hundred tabs -- anything that makes you simultaneously existentially angst-ridden yet highly agitated must be good shit. Jon Johansson gets fashion snaps for going ghetto fabulous in pinstripes and vulgar tie, and trying to find a pointy-headed way of saying "this is bullshit, give me a cheque made out to cash and there better be some serious booze in the green room." Linda Clark? I'm seeing the next big Halloween drag look now that Sarah Palin is soooo over.

And was I the only person who thought that IPredict thing achieved the impossible -- finally a lamer gimmick to try and sex-up the asexual than "THE WORM"!

Andrew E. You can embed a YouTube video in PA system by putting the link to it in the comment - make sure it includes the "www" bit and doesn't just start http://youtube.com ... You can check that you've got it right by clicking on "preview": if there's no writing at all where you'd think the link should appear, it's probably working.

    For example:

Try it. Go to youtube, find a video you like, copy the url and paste and post it here.

Recommendation: Next time we got with the electrified podiums, and the sudden death round with the leaders wrestling in a pool of blood wearing nothing but man-kinis.
