I feel I should in good conscience mention that it is currently sleeting. But sure.

  • Danielle,

Is sleet snow mixed with rain, or ice mixed with rain? Either way: sexy!

It's not 'people', it's just Grant.

  • Grant Dexter,

Grant-you know nothing of the outlay of the street and area where this is going on.

I don't? I know it's a house in a residential area which leads me to believe that officers should be able to use other buildings to get next door on either side. From there it would take a matter of seconds to launch a completely successful incapacitation and rescue.

The tv cameras can not see it from their vantage points. It's a house on a hill side with pretty good views of the street and surroundings. Any movement towards the dead policeman would have left the the police completely exposed

Rubbish. They guy's in a townhouse. Not even from an airport control tower could a sniper do much about men moving toward his position through neighbouring houses.

This has affected a lot of people here and funnily the people most affected are quite understanding about the need to take things carefully. Rumours are flying around Napier though and depending on who you talk to around town he's an ok guy or a dangerous man. The truth's probably somewhere in the middle.

Wouldn't it be so much easier to have this over and done with in the first hour instead of making a long weekend out of it?

  • Craig Ranapia,

When is someone going to shoot the criminal so Napier and New Zealand can get back to life?

Well, as I've pretty much ignored the media today my life didn't go anywhere.

Now, to jack the thread back -- 'Star Trek' enormous fun, although someone should tell folks that a crash cut and whip pan every 1/12 of a second is a hacky way of faking energy in a scene. And who the frak did Wynona Ryder piss off -- three lines, extreme hag makeover, and without wanting to spoil anything it makes no sense why she's in one scene at all, except as a set up for a rather nasty punchline.

Well, Grant, perhaps it would be a little easier being a Police officer in an incredibly shitty situation if you didn't have every dumb prick on the end of a pointless live cross second guessing every breath you take.

Mouthing off on the Net keeps some people from making far more tangible damage out there in the street, yes.

Well, I take your point but its still fucking obscene: Very easy to be brave and/or careless with others lives, especially when you won't ever have to wear the consequences.

  • ScottY,

Grant, you've missed your chance to be a hero, because it sounds like the siege is over. You should have flown straight to Napier, marched up to the police cordon and explained to them that due to your expertise in police operations, weapons, explosives and psychology (no doubt learned through numerous viewings of Die Hard), you were the man for the job. There would have been a Hollywood movie in it for sure, and an appearance on Oprah.

Now we'll never believe how much of a trained assasin you are. To us you'll always be a dick.

I was sickened by Judith Collins and the funny looking one, using the situation to fly on in for a photo op.WTF!

I think all the photo ops stink. I would rather they stuck to Parliament TV or just got on with doing their friggin job. As an aside, I am glad the dog is fine. They have no choice as to the position they have been entered into.

  • Kumara Republic,

This comment on Stuff summed it up quite nicely:

    Chris #397 05:50 pm May 08 2009

There will be a lot of should haves and could haves people. Armchair critics are sooooo lame. The people out there are doing the best they can. It is absolutely as bad as it gets and to critique whilst the situation is in progress is insensitive. Leave it to the professionals and trust they will make the right decision and hopefully no more lives will be lost.

I heard a good comment today stating the way they are handling the situation is what seperates us from animals. To the people calling for him to be killed understand that to try as hard as possible to talk him out instead of "blowing the house up" exhibits a characteristic that should be applauded, not criticised. 14 or so shots have just been fired, nobody knows what is happening in there. Focus should be on the families of the boys in there risking their lives. My thoughts are with you guys and hopefully you enjoy that next beer with them, one could hardly comprehend what your living right now. To the idiots saying how it should be done show some respect and shut the hell up. The reality and your fantasy are two very seperate things.
