  • Craig Ranapia,

It's not as great a crime as the bow tie on anyone who is not a surgeon or consultant. Which are you Mr Ranapia with your big photo in Metro?

Someone who is not going to draw attention to his problem area (i.e. a tum that would make Budai Luohan look man-orexic) with a vertical stripe of brightly hued silk.

  • Gareth Ward,

Cheers for the I'm on Fire link Russell - that is the perfect song for a late Friday afternoon tidy up of loose ends at work before the beer in the sun. Eerily accurate matching to mood.

  • Andrew Paul Wood,

Then Craig, I recommend the cravat - but actually (channeling Trinny and Suz) verticals are slimming. Anyway, the reason that Hopi the God of Luck is always smiling is because people rub his belly. Frankly, if you've got someone to rub your belly on a regular basis, I wouldn't worry about increasingly sacerdotal girth.

  • Russell Brown,

    Just back from lunch.

I love the way that Public Address readers can not only turn Tha Hoodie into an intellectual debate, but somehow bring in Foucault ...

You're welcome. I'm not even a Bruce fan (although I have been semi-converted to the pop charms of his last album), but that mix is real pretty ...

  • Emma Hart,

In principle, I would like to dress in the stylish and mature fashion of the dapper Mr Beard.

In practise, this requires more labour, thought and expense than I am prepared to put into the enterprise of dressing, except on special occasions. My sartorial-foo manifests only in my extensive collection of novelty t-shirts.

    Some suggestions on male dress.

    Nomnomnom.

  • Che Tibby,

Anyone over the age of 30 wearing a hoodie looks like a sad douchebag - ... - we can drink in bars and own property, yay!

bah. i grew up at the beach. we were wearing hoodies in the 80s and i'm wearing one right now.

mind you... i've all but given up drinking and own no property.

  • Tom Beard,

Then Craig, I recommend the cravat

Ah, a very underrated and highly versatile accessory. Easily the best thing to come out of Croatia.

I've just realised that I do own a hoodie of sorts: a Stitch Ministry black merino zip-up cardigan. Of course, I never wear it outdoors, though come to think of it, it might go nicely with a black velvet jacket and a pair of patent leather boots. Hoodies are terribly impractical though: they tend to get in the way of one's fedora.

Ménage à Trois with Mr Darcy and Heathcliffe?

No, still made perfect sense to me.

Oh dear, that makes me feel the need to go shopping right now, or at least before the free Champagne tasting starts at Wineseeker. Though the first one does look uncannily like my FB profile pic.

  • Paul Dowden,

Is this the hoodie Foucault might wear?

I am a fan of the Boss, that is a lovely mix, made my day (which is a sickie and needed making).

Also I have a hoodie (only one - though my better half buys them like they are going out of fashion which I spose they aren't). Strangely I only bought it recently having always felt it was a bit fraudulent to wear one if your'e not planning to nick something.

  • Pauline Dawson,

I guess I am one of those sad old people at 39 and wearing a hoodie (hey - its warm!). There is some local initiative for hoodie day with the slogan "its what's under the hood that matters" which makes absolute sense to me.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

Fedoras, are just too big, I've got my derby with me today.
The brim is just right to cut out this blinding bright sun today.
There is the hat shop in Victoria St and a one in High St Christchurch - but they are all Grandad hats.

How is Wellington set for guys hats or do I need to go to Melbourne?

  • Russell Brown,

bugger, that didn't quite go as I imagined

Aw, sorry, real HTML doesn't work here. I'd get the guys onto image embedding, but they're a bit busy whoring themselves to global capitalism at the moment ...

Unfortunately, Wellington Hatters has just closed, since Hank is off to NZ Ballet. However, much of his stock was from Hill's Hats of Petone, one of NZ's oldest hatmakers, and places like Kirkcaldie & Stains still stock them. Luckily, I managed to pick up a rather fetching fez during the closing sale.

  • Rob Hosking,

When I was at school, a lot of the English kids (we had a lot of pommie immigrants working at the Steel Mill) used to wear what I suppose would be called hoodies now.

They were a bit like this.

I used to think they were quite cool.

Can I completely and utterly change the subject and ask if anyone knows: what happened to Poneke? Was enjoying that blog. Not as much as this one, of course, but it had that air of civilisation missing from about 99.98% of the "blogosphere" ...

Screw pants -- flat fronts are all very well if you're well hung and haven't had an ounce of fat between belly button and knee since the Carter Administration. Some of us need some well-tailored hiding places. :)

  • Samuel Scott,

the film Superbad madew me want to wear more hoodies. Although I have eyeballing the lams wool ones from Mandatory which don't reall count in the tough kid scheme of things.
