  • James Green,

I like the Springstein, but I'm still a fan of the HLAH cover...

  • Jane Treadwell,

I like that Juha linked to the Homepage Hall of Shame from his blog on ... Stuff.

Just wish our NZ news home pages would think about PDA/Blackberry users and follow the model of the BBC. I can, and do, read the BBC website on my Blackberry having selected the PDA version. FREE OF CHARGE (ie the BBC doesn't make me pay unlike Granny H)!!

Stuff and NZ Herald just have loads and loads of links and advertising at the beginning and an annoying slow download speed - anyone discovered a better way of reading them on the small screen?

  • Islander,

Now listen little mate of the 'over-30 sad douchebag comment': I wear hoodies throughout winter. They are Glowing Skies merino hoodies- they are warming, from your arse to the top of your head. They are necessary (especially if you live in my kind of weatherzone.) They are *not* the sole province of disaffected yoof, real or wannabee. And I have been wearing hoodies for nearly 20 years-

OT but somehow relevant- I put a comment on Poneke's website early last night when he announced he was closing down for a while. When I next checked in, there were 26 mainly supportive grieving & positive comments. This morning, I couldnt access the site at all (despite trying to get a username at Wordpress...) I stink with his comment, and my final comment 'Ka kite ano."

    I do hope so.

  • Islander,

O shite - put 2 errors down to hoodie-overheated head-

-comment should be excluded from the single quote marks on the first line,
and I really *stick* with Poneke's comment in the penultimate line-

(throws off hood of hoodie: succumbs to hypothermia.)

My sentiments, exactly. I'm wearing a hoodie. I like hoodies. (I'm assuming by hoodie, one means a sweatshirt with a hood?) I work with little people, and this necessitates me spending a good deal of my week outside. Therefore, at this particular time of year, a warm sweatshirt with a hood is a must, I find. But then I've never been one to be told what people my age should wear. I still wear leggings from time to time too - I rather fancy my legs, even if no-one else does.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

I've drunken with a few anoraks (while under age 20) and if you want the engine & car schedules, toll will give them to you - you don't have to wait in the rain and count as they go through. I do believe you, that Toll gets it wrong and some of the cars are different from time to time.

  • samuel walker,

Rob, after my review, I can say they are back to being cool. Snorkel jacket's

Snorkel jackets are very popular within Hip Hop culture being worn by both men and women.

i consider snorkel jackets to be one of the few items that some how manage to transcend the confines of fashionability. they are timeless like the blue spinny box.

    heed my words though:

    never

    ever

ever wear one fully zipped up in the same city as Harold from the Picassos. therapy aint cheap my friends. it aint cheap.

  • robbery,

95bFM's Jose Barbosa interviewed me recently for a retrospective on New Zealand's first dedicated music channel, Max TV.

Cry TV, New Zealand's first 24-hour music channel, went to air in Christchurch in 1993, closely followed by Max TV in Auckland.

never let the facts get in the way of a good story. what was wrong with auckland's first?

  • David Hamilton,

Hoodies are like great big hugs that last all day. People who see them as intimidating markers of youth delinquency should be stood out on the beach in a wellington winter for five minutes then given a big thick one. Then they will understand.

  • Gerrit Bearda,

Seen recently at Sylvia Park Shoppping Centre.

Man with hoodie up being accosted by a security guard into lowering it from the top of his head.

Just as a burka wearing muslim lady walked past.

Is the burka the ultimate hoodie?

  • Ben Austin,

I purchased a hoody specially when I moved to London, after all, I want to show the natives that I embrace their culture wholeheartedly. Plus it looks kind of neat with my mustache.

I've yet to be harassed by the police or mall security guards despite my frequent loitering and lollygagging.

  • paulalambert,

At the Hep C Awareness event in Christchurch today there were several likely-looking Public Address readers. It was a fairly calm and sunny good day, finished off very nicely by 45 minutes of The Chills. Noone there was wearing a snorkel though, pity LOL it would have added to the occasion, every other style was represented. People suffering with Hep C seem to be a wide cross-section of the community.

I am nowhere near my teens but wear a hoodie quite often, its great; keeps the top of my back extra warm in marginal weather, so no need to continually drag a scarf around.

Never worn a hoodie myself, but I noticed quite jarringly as a symptom of a usually quite dapper friend's peaking mental illness, a tendency to wear hoodies and dark glasses. Now, not to suggest that hoodies per se are symptomatic of depression and anxiety disorder (been there myself, no T-shirt, but I do have the little red pills still), they may be ameliorative - cutting out the increasing ambient blare and chatter of the world with a day-long hug... which may say something about the corners youth are finding themselves painted into. True, they are (allegedly, as a class) addicted to cellphones, multitasking, tagging and suchlike, but that's controlled semiology.

A former colleague commented unsympathetically once on the "numbing" behaviours characteristic of her students and I wonder if the hoodie is one such.

That sullenness attributed to hooded youth might be something much sadder.

  • Islander,

-senstive post Kracklite, and agreed, all kinds of thibngs (clothes et al)
can be subdued cries of distress/indicaors of alienation BUT
-like a lot of Swandri garments-there are entirely practical reasons for
    their adoption also.

I am not a fashion follower (this is right up there with stating I am not religious!) but my clothing - reguardless of ANY fashion context- is *always* practical, comfortable, easy-to-wear...

    hence. my hoodie collection-

personally? i've always considered fashion an opportunity to make the vacuous relevant. </intellectual snobbery>

  • Don Christie,

    Parkers...

They were the thing. I had a fake one as a kid. The real ones had rabbit fur round the hood.

In a fight they were a debilitating accessory. Your opponent simply had to drag the long hood over your head and administer a good kicking shortly afterwards.

Put me off getting into fights though. Well, that and a hight challenged physique.

I managed to pick up a rather fetching fez during the closing sale.

Somehow Tom, this is the funniest sentence I've read all morning.

Not sure what this was apropos of, but isn't it the end of trainspotting when that happens? A sad loss for youth - I guess it's WoW all the way from now.

  • Che Tibby,

you should see the fez! it got some rather strange looks from the hoodies in manners mall, let me tell you.

    tom. smart man. but fashionable.

if you refer to my last comment this makes him something of a conundrum.

  • Andrew Paul Wood,

I haven't got a problem with people who wear hoodies in the privacy of their own home or because its cold - but wearing them because you identify with the pop culture or people ten years or more your junior, smacks of Peter Pan and midlife crisis.

Any chance you can post a link to a picture of yourself Andrew? I'd love to see what you look like, so I can pass judgement on the cut of your __ Fashion Police Uniform__.

But you're right. My Peter Pan complex prevents me from aging gracefully/fashionably. Here's where I get my midlife fashion cues from:
