  • Matthew Poole, in reply to 3410,

the word on the street is that the SkyCity convention centre deal is dead in the water.

    Good.
The Herald has today announced SkyCity has identified 291% more problem gamblers last year than in 2008 but only increased exclusions by 27%, leading Problem Gambling Foundation's spokesman to the conclusion that "it's my belief that actually the business model is dependent upon people with problems."
I wonder what that tobacco will taste like in Shon Key's pipe.

  • Steve Barnes,

3410 you are a moron and a coward hiding behind a synonym.. To think Key is telling the truth is telling people to deny any knowledge of anything is an acceptable statement

    Woah, steady on there…
    What Threefer said was…

I hope for their sake that they’ve got some evidence for the thinly-veiled implication that the PM was… less than truthful in his claim that he’d not even heard of Kim Dotcom until the day before the raid.

I hope for all our sakes someone calls johnkey to task over the ineptitude of his statement that he knows nothing and nobody ever tells him anything, it is utter bollocks.
If johnkey didn’t know then he should not be PM.
    Simple as that.

Tell me Steve who in this country would stand up to JK? He flannels his way out of any tight spot like a sycophantic liar. Bankers of his caliber are good at that.

3410 and Steve , sorry to have missed your subtle sarcasm. Just so enraged after watching J K on TV last night. Might need to have a wee nap or medicinal brandy or both. Peace.

The Beeb's Stephen Sackur did, but he's not in NZ. Guyon Espiner held his own quite nicely when probing Prostetnic Vogon Joyce and SkyCity yes-man Paul Treacy over the pokies wheeler-deal on 60 Minutes. Nekminnit…

I kind'a hoped John Campbell would pile into him the way he did to Clark. I couldn't tell whether johnkey was rather good at being a complete Banker or Campbell was going soft, I suspect the latter. John Key is not that bright when it comes to things like ethics and morals, plausible denial is his friend and it appears truth is the enemy of finance and those that practice that dark art.

PM gets grilling but emerges unscathed
    The big questions.
    From a bunch of kids.

Royal wedding or Rugby World Cup final?

    The footy.

    TV1 or TV3?

TV1, "because TV3 were mean to me last night".

Ideal job if not prime minister?

    Airline pilot or butcher.

What do you always carry in your pocket?

Money, "Cause you never know when you'll need to buy something ... and my wife takes the money from my wallet".

Airline Pilot, Butcher? please, be our guest.

    someone else probably will.

Didn't they donate to John Banks?

I'd really like to see all MP's forced to open up their trust funds, or at least make all trusts forced open. If Banks goes, Key must go too /my bias showing/ logic demands it /insert money trail here/.
    Wooosh, there they go.
Anyone else noticed the newspaper writers getting very nervous today?

  • DexterX, in reply to Steve Barnes,

I kind'a hoped John Campbell would pile into him the way he did to Clark.

I watched on Friday Campbell Live and the pre recorded interview with Key that aired – although holding some promise – it died when they eventually rubbed each other’s bellies.

    http://www.3news.co.nz/John-Key-discusses-Dotcom-saga/tabid/367/articleID/253053/Default.aspx

The answer to most questions is – “I can’t tell you either way because I just don’t know”. Yeah Right.

The closing of the interview – The cast iron guarantee from Banks that he has complied with the Electoral Act - The million of things going on - we don’t talk about things we don’t need to be involved in.

We don't need to be involved in things that might blow up in our face - so yes keep your distance - He who sups with the devil should draw a long spoon.

Key has asked Banks a salient question – Did the returns filed comply with the Act – Banks has given an answer that they do – This suits Key for the time being, however, when the truth comes out Banks may no longer be a cabinet minister although he may hang onto the seat of Epsom until any prosecution runs it course.

I believe Kim Dot Com on the matter of the donations and considered Banks suffers from involving himself in the fundraising and a National Party Support Team that was perhaps sloppy – the default setting seeming to be all large donations were to be treated as anonymous regardless.

If Banks and Act purge themselves from the political landscape – well good riddance to bad rubbish – Act in Epsom is a cunning plan that is tanking marvelously.

If you can’t get the small stuff right then just don’t sweat the big stuff like managing the economy, 160,000 unemployed, and the Christchurch rebuild - but by all means concentrate on the Sky City Con Deal and Assets Sales - you know do that stuff well - the stuff that shafts the electorate.

  • Gudrun Gisela,

Can you imagine how we feel in Christchurch? Parker announcing a new Conference Center, three times the size of the one just destroyed while he aims to increase our rates by more than 7%. People in the eastern suburbs still held to ransom by insurance, by EQC and CERA still using port -a- loos and living in garages as they grapple with the oncoming winter.

Whoever did the tiniest bit of forecasting will have to realize that people are not too happy to have a conference in a city that potentially can have another 6.plus quake .
There is Sydney and Hawaii just a hop and a skip away. As it had been pointed out there is no money in Conference Centers.I would not be surprised if the idea did not come from Key Dot Com.

    Jeeze this is ludicrous.
Has noone considered that the grand junkets, where hundreds of boffins jet off to the furthest corners of the earth to talk shop, drink, smooze, and indulge in bored adultery, are bound to disappear under cost-cutting, rising fuel prices, global warming, and the ubiquity of instant telecommunications?
Parker et al appear completely unimaginative. Wot we had, only bigger. Bet we get to call it 'The Parker Centre' so out-of-towners can roll up looking for a space to plonk their camper-van.

Given Parker's happy complicity in being nobbled by central government, it's largely pie in the sky - as long as he's seen to be doing something, and the Council's cronies can justify their $80,000 for the CEO getting "out & about in the community". But those certainly are their avowed priorities.

I meant a link about the new conference centre being proposed by Parker to be 3x the size. Can't see anything on the Press website and haven't heard it anywhere else yet.

This is probably what you're after - the most extravagant option is more than 3x the size of the recently demolished facility.

Thanks. Must be those new options 3 and 4 I heard could be sited somewhere near the old central Police Station on the Hagley side of the Avon.

Fields of dreams - build it & they will come.

When I was working at a Sydney film studio in the 70s they gave a group of New Guineans a guided tour of the place. Afterwards we were told that they were part of a cargo cult who'd been brought to see where the cargo really came from, courtesy of their then Australian colonial overlords.

Contemporary cargo cults don't appear to work that way. Parker's likely to return from his current overseas jaunt with even grander fantasies. Dare to dream & all.

Aah, hadn't heard the site. Adds up in an awful way. I don't think we need a convention centre at all; if so it should be a multi-purpose event "facility" -- that of course is not on the options list .

Worth remembering that the asset sell-off isTownsend and the Chamber of Commerce pushing the same old barrow. If the council adopted that plan, not one of them or National MPs in the city would return to power -- it's an electoral line in the sand in Christchurch.
