Those gorgeous little sea dragons! I've just looked at that sequence - thought I was out of broadband, but that seems to have miraculously righted itself - and was reminded of sea horses.

    RB,
Is there a post on Libya coming sometime soon? Be interested to know you take on it.

  • Sacha, in reply to James Bremner,

You're joking - you picked the post about kittens to ask that?

  • James Bremner, in reply to Sacha,

Sacha, RB made a reference to Libya in the original post to this string. It was the only place I found a reference to Libya in my review of recent posts and comments.

As what is happening in Libya is a significant event I was expecting a post and thread on the subject.

Life is confusing. Now Obama sounds like a neocon by saying the goal in Libya is installing a democratic system. Did he read one of Bush's speeches by mistake?

You mean the bit at the beginning where Russell said news had been bleak so the post would be about kittens and puppies instead? I'd jump into any other thread with a plea to discuss war if I were so inclined.

No. The statement refers to helping provide the Libyan people with "an opportunity to transform their country, by installing a democratic system that respects the people’s will."

It's the Libyans who are expected to establish -- ie "install" -- a democracy, not the US and Turkey. There's no way that the US wants to be "installing" democracy in Libya with the cost and risk that implies, still less the Turks. The story is founded on a single ambiguous line in one statement -- although I'm sure it's being vigorously washed around the noise machine.

Meanwhile, I can recommend Juan Cole's Top Ten Ways that Libya 2011 is Not Iraq 2003.

I was actually planning to raise a discussion, but a brief bout of flu has screwed up my workflow. I'll see what I can do today.

    Back to kittens.

  • Neil Morrison,

Libya is of course not exactly the same as Iraq but there are some similarities. US military intervention against a dictator being one.

Thank you Lara - I am currently showing some of the kids - including a new, whiney one, and it's stopped him whining - all those websites plus some more. There have been whoops of joy and ooohs of cute. And some useful animal identification, to boot.

  • Islander,

Oh - and in the completely OT but very happy news department the looney USA psychic who urged the evacuation of "the city of Greymouth and all coast towns further south" because, you know, there was going to be this gigantic earthquake & accompanying tsunami? Today? Between noon and 1pm?

    got it wrong.

  • Jackie Clark,

We're in this twilit zone that is the end of a beloved animal friend's life, and though I'm sad, I'm also incredibly grateful to my Cleo. Because of her, we found the Big King. We gained a dog pack, and a people pack. I learned about what makes dogs tick, a bit. And most of all, she has loved us, and trusted us. And in return, we have loved her as best as we have known how. So if you don't mind, I'd like to share her with you when she was in her heyday.
