• Danielle,

just feel we've been matronized too long

Teh wimmins! They are crushing the poor men beneath their mighty Amazonian jackboot with their insistence on rights to personhood and bodily autonomy and whatnot! Whatever shall we dooooo?

    In other words, Mark: meh.

what's to prevent such a scenario?

  • Lucy Stewart,

which part of the logic is problematic for you lucy?

...the part where a woman is forced to go through with a pregnancy she does not wish to carry to term, thereby rendering her no more than an incubator for the foetus/embryo she carries. Not to mention endangering her health and life involuntarily. What part of "violation of bodily autonomy" don't you understand? And don't fluff around with the marriage bit; marriage does not equal ownership. We called that the nineteenth century, dude.

Any thoughts on the prospect of adoption as part of an alternative to abortion?

I think it's _an_ option. I think it also carries many of the same problems, re: turning women into incubators for other people to get babies from. If someone wants to, they should go for it, but especially for young women pregnancy is a huge disruption to their life, and it's not an easy alternative. Furthermore, the evidence for long-term psychological damage is much greater than that for damage from abortion. I think it should be offered; I don't think it should be pushed as a way to lower the number of abortions.

because after abortion, the wife will simply answer her husbands incredulous complaints with "meh"

It occurs that if two people are that diametrically separated on issues relevant to marriage like, say, reproductive rights, they perhaps should not be married. Just a thought there.

  • B Jones,

They come in patent leather, too.

Honestly, on what basis can someone who writes this sort of nonsense:

two weeks later his wife watches a moving episode of oprah, rushes out for another abortion

expect the compliment of rational opposition?

  • Russell Brown,

If Russell wants to stir up a bit of abortion fanaticism I'm more than happy to oblige in giving opinion holders a target to vent at.

Mark, the problem with trolling is that it implies a lack of respect for the others involved in the discussion. It can be funny in short bursts, but it quite quickly becomes dull and corrosive. And a bit embarrassing to watch.

    C'mon.

"Furthermore, the evidence for long-term psychological damage is much greater than that for damage from abortion."

Not sure the adopted children would agree with that, but it would be fascinating to read.

    Cheers

  • mark taslov,

again lucy, you got alot of fight in you, if you don't want to start a fire, why light the match, they sell condoms, the pill, the day after pill, those weird cut in half tennis balls, if she doesn't want to carry it, it's a hard task arguing there aren't options out there, that don't endanger her health, i understand fully what you're saying about violating bodily anatomy, abortion is an invasion of bodily anatomy

it is the invasion of bodily anatomy,

i will stress that i am pro choice

but your arguing against violation of bodily anatomy by effing for the violation of bodily anatomy, i get the feeling from what you're saying that you've been fuly brainwashed into believing pregnancy is unnatural.

    we all have bodies
we all know what they do how they function
    hopefully

i mean, how does that work lucy?

  • davidamstalden,

This is fascinating. mark has single-handedly confirmed my suspicions that on any given topic, 90% of people should only do 10% of the talking.

    Kudos to you, mark.

Not sure the adopted children would agree with that, but it would be fascinating to read.

Not psychologically damaging for the kids; for the mothers. Not in every case, naturally, but it's not the easy answer to abortion.

  • Kyle Matthews,

I actually do think there's some slim argument for men being able to veto a pregnancy going ahead.

I think there's an argument, I just don't see how to make it practically apply. I do understand how there are some males out there who feel a little bitter about the path of life however, particularly when it comes to child support payments.

men who couldn't afford the paternity test to prove the kid wasn't theirs, and had to shell out.

I half caught a news story that there were some changes in this matter either happening or in the pipeline. I believe it was along the lines that where the court had reason to believe that a person might not be the father, they could order a parentage test to take place, previously the mother could refuse. I might be telling accidental porkies though.

they have an argument over what to have for tea, harsh words aired, wife goes out and gets an abortion, and what can be done to prevent that?

tommy husband driving home from work, runs over the cat, wife goes out and gets another abortion....

I'm not sure of everything that goes through a woman's mind before having an abortion, but I'm not sure "steak dammit!" or "oh no, not Tiddles the cat!" are top of the list. If they are, it's probably just desserts for choosing a person who has an abortion as a form of revenge, as your sexual partner.

  • mark taslov,

russell no offence, but i don't feel embarrassed. I wasn't even trolling until stephen and lucy tried to invalidate my argument by relegating it to trolling, i have serious questions about why someone on this thread is arguing that pregnancy is a violation of human anatomy and and abortion is not.

    alarm bells should be ringing

  • Lucy Stewart,

you got alot of fight in you

Like I said: study break, bored, plus these jackboots need to be taken out and given an airing every so often. I think you get feminist bingo points for the patronising tone there, though.

but your arguing against violation of bodily anatomy by effing for the violation of bodily anatomy, i get the feeling from what you're saying that you've been fuly brainwashed into believing pregnancy is unnatural.

My right to choose whether or not I do something to my body is violating my bodily autonomy? Bzzt. Failure of logic. And, oops, weren't you a strong supporter of abortion a few pages back?

But you're right, I have been brainwashed! I am a mere weak woman, who has been cruelly seized by the Feminazis and forced to do their bidding! My opinion is not my own! Help me, someone, help!

Hey guys...if you stop responding to the trolling, maybe the troll will go away...

It doesn't happen very often here on P.A, but it makes me glad that I don't read Whaleoil et al on a regular basis, that's for sure! What do you call it when all the comments on a thread are trollish?

  • mark taslov,

    thank you kyle,

My right to choose whether or not I do something to my body is violating my bodily autonomy? Bzzt. Failure of logic. And, oops, weren't you a strong supporter of abortion a few pages back?

yes, your right to chose to do something to your body might or might not violate your bodies anatomy, if i chose to donate a kidney, i am violating my bodies anatomy. that's what i mean by logic, perhaps you ill chose your words, but if we're talking about anatomy and we're talking about violating, then yes abortion is a violation of your natural anotomical processes.

    violating your human right?

    No

I believe it's your human right not to have that child, but you will have to violate your bodies anatomy to exercise that human right.

i am a supporter of abortion. over every single page,

this is not about gender, don't make it about that. men have babies too you know

Newsflash: plays on words do not make you clever. And any surgery violates bodily anatomy, hah hah. It doesn't make it wrong. I violate my bodily anatomy by having my ears pierced, for god's sake. Don't be specious.

this is not about gender, don't make it about that. men have babies too you know

Nice try. But until a cisgendered man manages to get pregnant, I'm gonna go with women's rights issue here.
