  • Lucy Stewart,

I saw the Geonet email and started crying. Just - god, it never stops.

  • Pete Sime,

Hugs to the Cantabs. I'm worried - there'll be a lot of people at the shops.

  • Isaac Freeman,

All fine here in Ilam. Power still on. Family reporting in and all fine so far.

  • Lilith __,

As my hands stop shaking and I’m better able to assimilate this: it’s not that big, the epicentre’s out of the city. The earth’s been pretty quiet for the last few months, so this is a rude shock. Quite a swarm of aftershocks, though.

Clever Emma for going on holiday.

  • Hebe,

Fuck and bugger. At least we were all at home and together. Good few aftershocks still going. Sirens heard in the distance here (St Martins).

Power, phones out in Brighton area. Strong in St Martins but not tragic; PiL in sumner say it was one of the strongest they have experienced but services still on there on the flat.

  • Raymond A Francis,

Felt the roll and just felt so sick because if we feel them this far away it is a fair sign it was a big one

  • Morgan Nichol,

I don't know how the people who stay do it. Goes to show how much they love their city. I haven't been able to visit since the first quake, most of what I loved about the city was in the middle, so practically all of it is now gone. Good thing the central art gallery was built so well, that's something at least.

  • Pete Sime,

It looks like the epicentre is off-shore, which is a little different to the previous big two. I wonder if it’s a different fault line.

P.S. A friend on Facebook reported feeling it on the fifth floor of a building in Dunedin. I'm in a bungalow in Dunedin, didn't feel it myself.

  • Lara,

Fine. Yet to hear back from some family, but will hopefully be fine. Was really hoping it was out this way but back on the east again :S

Yes, I suspect it is. I know Geonet mapped some out in the Bay that they thought could potentially move.

  • Rob Stowell,

Cellphones not working that well. Town will be crowded, and probably gridlocked as people head home, and shops close....
Getting txts from out of town, but not from family shopping in Chch.
    Bloody hell.

  • Stephen Judd,

Bloody hell. We're supposed to be flying to Chch this evening to visit the beloved's family (who have all checked in ok). Dunno what'll happen now.

Heard the news as one of my colleagues ran in to tell me that server load was spiking (we look after Stuff's servers).

Big hugs to shaken people. We hope to be among you soon.

  • Russell Brown,

CHECKING IN: David Haywood, Jen Hay and family are fine.

They were out driving by Dunsandel and, amazingly, didn't feel a thing. Frankly, if anyone deserved a break ...

  • Russell Brown,

Just stopped after an hour of retweeting reports, getting this thread up, etc. Feeling teary now.

Especially re-reading these successive tweets from Cheryl Bernstein:

We know, after a big one, that there are weeks & months of aftershocks ahead, & that’s what makes it so hard to bear. #eqnz

    And:

But we will bear it. We can. There’s strength in knowledge, and experience, and community. #eqnz

  • Morgan Nichol,

All our family down there is now accounted for, all well apart from one of the kids being inconsolable. We had her and the rest of her family up after the first big one, no word yet on whether they want to get out again or not.
