Power, phones out in Brighton area. Strong in St Martins but not tragic; PiL in sumner say it was one of the strongest they have?

I don't know how the people who stay do it. Goes to show how much they love their city. I haven't been able to visit since the first quake, most of what I loved about the city was in the middle, so practically all of it is now gone. Good?

It looks like the epicentre is off-shore, which is a little different to the previous big two. I wonder if it?s a different fault line.

P.S. A friend on Facebook reported feeling it on the fifth floor of a building in Dunedin. I'm in a bungalow in Dunedin, didn't feel?

I was in Farmers at the Palms mall when it happened. It's a lot more frightening that being at home or work. People were crying and panicking, which always seems to make it worse.

The quake at 15:18 is being reported now as a magnitude 6.0, but MM8. That?s getting way rough down there.
And the drums are showing some big activity around 16:00, which fits with what I?m seeing on Facebook.

Belatedly to report, a GeoNet person on National Radio yesterday said that one thing they can authoritatively say is that yesterday's quakes would not have generated a tsunami, that would require a magnitude 7 or bigger.

I think they are okay but I would caution that the pipeline off South Brighton seems to be right in line with some of the epicentres. So use your nose and treat it on a hour by hour basis. The harbour or more northern becahes might be better.

I've seen talk of detailed seismic forecasts being released only to the insurance and financial sector. There was publicity earlier in the year about Brownlee refusing to release geotech data to homeowners and their representatives, but being more than happy to hand it to re/insurers. I'm sure there are arguments?

The reports should all say the same thing. Aftershocks follow a logarithmic decay curve on the standard scales, it's just a matter of fitting that curve to what's happened in Christchurch.

Basically though, -15% in the last 15 months means -15% in the next 15 months, so down to about?

Using an energy scale of (number of M4-equivalent quakes), and smoothing each day's total over the surrounding week, a plot of (log energy release) vs time for Japan is roughly linear, but with clear outliers on 22 June and 11 July, and then a sustained higher-than-expected release from?

I have 2 friends who are geologists: their speciality is palaeo-tsunamis, but they have huge field experience of studying earthquakes.

It is *their* opinion that a rupture of the Alpine fault – to the degree it has moved in the past- is likely to be 9+.

Aint outside their 'niche' and they have published a rather large amount on everything, including that...there WAS a major tsunami event on the West Coast in the late 18th century( slump tsunami* generated by a Fjordland earthquake),which they have documented and published, & they estimated, from previous events, that the next?

Not yet . It seems they appear after liquefaction has drained away. Truthfully it does look like the entire area there is kind of hollow even under the tar sealing. What is interesting, is the speed by which sinkholes get fixed . As soon as somebody spots one, City Care?

I read sometime in the last year or so, somewhere, an expert of some some sort saying that even after the earthquakes stop it will take a couple of years for the ground to settle and the sinkholes and cracks to stop appearing and widening.
