  • Steve Parks,

    "Homophobia is Gay"

Jimbo: "You kissed a girl? That's so gay!"

  • Sacha,

it derived from "Special Needs" which, to a point, is a good way of describing someone who needs a bit of help, more so than "Others" (excuse the deliberate logical twist).

You're not twisting far enough. Imagine you and a blind person entering a darkened room. Whose relationship with the light switch is "special"?

  • Sacha,

Please let's not get diverted by the suppression of someone's identity which is not the same thing at all as Russell patiently pointed out upthread.

  • Steve Parks,

While I understand and agree Neil, there are myriad combination of words that are banned in certain contexts, due to the suppression order. Because regardless of my intended meaning, you and I both know there are certain combinations of words ( or a single word if you want to be tricky) that I'm legally prevented from writing, regardless of whether any information is conveyed to anyone or not.

What Steve Barnes said. Plus, you originally implied an organisation was banning specific words, not just certain combinations of words in certain contexts.

I agree with you that this particular imposition on our freedom of expression by the courts is wrong, though. (But, as Sacha reminds us, that is a separate issue.)

  • Hilary Stace,

'In-valid' Benefit has long been a concern for the sector. Some had graduated from the Handicapped Child's Allowance. That is now called the Child Disability Allowance and the In-valid's Benefit could easily be renamed the Disability Benefit.

Whatever the name, young people whose parents get the Child Disability Allowance (and those with any sort of impairment label should have been getting this since diagnosis as hopefully someone told them about it) should receive a letter from Work and Income when they are 16, telling them they are eligible to go on the IB in their own right (and then the parents no longer get the allowance). It requires some evidence of impairment, such as an IEP or doctor's certificate, but it no longer (since about 2 years ago) needs annual renewal. And it is not means tested. At 18 it should go up to the adult rate, regardless of whether the young adult is still at school. It is not of course enough to live independently and also have any disposable income, but it is still an important right. It also means a Community Services card to get discounts at pools etc and gets the young person on the books of supported employment agencies like Workbridge, or access to other programmes.

But it seems some Work and Income regions are better than others at making sure those who are eligible know about it.

(Some of my details might not be up to date but someone out there will know the correct info.)

  • mark taslov,

Sorry Sacha if I may just one last time.

And there is the difference "combination of words" as opposed to just words.

That would depend what language you're using, and the formal rules for distinguishing words, if words and morphemes are in fact distinct. Does this ruling apply only in English? Alphabetized languages contain an unlimited freedom to create new words.

  • Craig Ranapia,

On the other hand, "nigger" didn't use to be such a bad word ...

Damn, do I have to get out my offence taking pants with the special panty waist...

And we're not even getting to white kids from the North Shore who greet each other with "Yo, mah nigga!"

Oh, had that conversation -- and showed said kid a photo of my father -- with the heavily implied threat that something most definitely not OK is going to happen to his arse courtesy of my best boots if he drops the N-bomb in my hearing again. That's my context, be-atch. Deal.

  • Rich of Observationz,

It's different again -- these kids are identifying with niggaz, because they are taking cultural cues from hip hop music.

Is that similar to the use of swastikas by members of largely Polynesian gangs?

  • Deborah,

OTOH, I have gay friends who might refer to themselves as "faggots". It's all about context.

By analogy, perhaps a person with learning difficulties referring to herself as 'retarded' is one thing, but another person using the word 'retarded' in reference to her is another.

Depends on what parallel you're trying to draw. All kinds of gangs, not just Polynesian ones, have used Nazi symbols because they communicate being anti-social. You don't shout sieg fucken heil because you're a Nazi, but because it's really offensive to mainstream society's values. Which I think is pretty different from admiring black performers so much that you take on their language.

so polys arent allowed to be anti semitic ?...thats racialist:)

    LOL.

  • Rich Lock,

NatRad was still going on about the Adagio fiasco on Midday Report. There were gasps, apparently, from members of the audience, when the offending words were spoken and the offending orgasm faked.

In other news, pantomime audiences were heard to say "ooh" in response to innuendo spoken by men dressed as women and women dressed as boys.

Yes. What they should really do is put is all BEHIIIIIND THEEEMMMM!!!!!

    Coat, getting, etc.

    "Brutus is an honourable man."

Oh Steve, bless you. That was one of my Honours essays: "All Honourable Men: Values and Truth in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar", and you're dead right. Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to nerd right up there.

Slightly relatedly, I'm kind of tired of being told that referring to my daughter as 'hearing impaired' is politically correct bullshit, and it should be 'deaf'. No it bloody shouldn't, but thanks for proving you know jack fucking shit.

  • Julie Fairey,

Gotta love a badass who carries around a picture of his father.

Ah, do other people not carry around pics of their parents? Isn't that what that bit in the wallet is for?

Although somehow I doubt me flashing a cute pic of my dad cuddling my son is going to have the same impact as Craig getting up in someone's grill...

I think Deborah has a really good point - what you call yourself, how you identify yourself, should largely be respected, but when you are affixing a label to another you need to be more cautious with the language you use.

Having said that I did once get very short with someone who proclaimed themselves firmly pro-choice and then went to on to explain that the choice was choosing whether or not to have sex...

  • Islander,

Tautoko Deborah's point -we have a habit in my (quite large) whanau of saying "She's a bit different" (me) or "He's a bit different' (one of my grandnephews who is Aspergers.) It covers a very wide range of differences, and isnt taken as perjorative.

Yeah, I kind of regret saying anything now. At the time I was struck by this image of Craig as the law, laying it down clear as day for the kids, Samuel L Jackson like.

And watch various women of my acquaintance sharpening their second best stilettos in anticipation of some Single White Female-style re-education if I open my trap any wider. :)

Perhaps Caliban spoke a greater truth than we like to admit when he wailed:

You taught me language; and my profit on't
Is, I know how to curse. The red plague rid you
    For learning me your language!

Luke's a sweetie -- but if I can't exercise my uncle powers for good, what's the use of them? I'm working on the whole that's sooo gay thing by ostentatious throat clearing and a little light glaring. If intimidation doesn't do the trick, making the little bastard blush just has to do.
