That Homebrew video just scares me. Even if it's being sarcastic/cynical, there's too much truth in there. I feel slightly depressed.

  • John Armstrong,

Two melted lindt choccies that a nice woman gave to my two year old at the Hamilton Garden Festival symphony in the park event last week. (He had already been to a birthday party that morning and enough sugar was enough..)

Attached to the choccies is a very lovely memory of said two-year old's much anticipated (at least by me) response to his first sighting of proper fireworks. Which was to sleep through them.

  • Martin Lindberg,

It's rayon and it came from Strangely Normal

Were you aware of the fact that rayon is a manufactured regenerated cellulose fiber and is neither a truly synthetic fiber nor a natural fiber.

Well, I wasn't. So it's like paper? Will it disintegrate in rain?

It disintegrates in the washing machine if you aren't careful, so... sort of.

Took my (then) 3 yr old to the Oakland 4th July fireworks - the result was abject terror - but as I was carrying him away from the waterfront clamped to my shoulder he kept peeking in wonder at the lights in the sky

  • LIISA,

Homebrew finally get NZoA funding… and this is what they spend it on. Their layers upon layers of subversion crack me up. That video lives in a special subgenre with this one: the one by The Sneaks.

Which also reminds of Peter Jefferies tale of his mum financing some early recording after a good day at the races. I doubt it was this (can’t recall right now) which is one of my faves.

That tune was later recycled for this better known (but not as great – to me) song:

The legit video of which is still being blocked by Warner Music Group – even though they do not own it. hopefully the links work here… happy day.

Nah, you totally bollocksed them up ;-) But I fixed them, For YouTube vids, just post in the URL (i.e.: not the short one) and they automatically embed and for making links, study the instructions again … RB

I'm fairly sure 'The Sleepwalker' actually goes all the way back to Children's Hour, but I don't think they managed to play it live.

    abject terror

Yes, that was a risk, particularly as our wee boy isn't at all keen on loud noises. As a result we had a carefully-worked out plan which involved sitting near a strategically selected exit, estimating the combined temporal duration of 'Land of Hope and Glory' and the 1812 Overture, mapping the most efficient route through packed carparks and the neighbouring cemetary (factoring in the need to not walk across any actual graves at night), all with a view to arriving at a pre-selected hilltop that was simultaneously far enough away to minimise the terrorising effects of sound yet sufficiently elevated to provide an optimal and unobstructed visual field. And do you think we could wake him up?

Curiously apt moment to ask this.
Shorts pockets: Keys and smartphone. Secateurs and a handsaw.
Shirt pocket, about 35 unidentified pieces of garden debris which must have fallen in there. Various seeds, leaves, and a small spider.

    In my pocket...

a sort of note in a bottle, set adrift on the seas of commerce.

    That's one sanguine penguin...*
and Ed has got his back!

...which is as good a reason as any to reconnect with
Trillion's (Jody Lloyd) 'Humble Mountain Man' tribute
Nice to see it is edging up towards 100,000 views
(I strike another small blow for immortality at 2.24!)

*Is there a law that says all penguins should be orange on paper?

    What's really in my pocket?
    - 2 plastic bags
    - a list of things to do
    - house & car keys
    - camera
    - phone
    - biro
    - sharpie
    - a licorice allsort
    - wallet
    - handkerchief
    - at last the keys for my lock up
    - a lot of Dr Haywood's last remaining chimney
    - and a hole, too...

  • Marcus Turner,

This is sort of relevant, if you squint your eyes up, and there's a following wind. It's Australian, but much of it seems to apply to NZ too. It's sort of about equality and money. And written by the Treasurer.

I didn't even mention the polar coat thrown over the chair:
4 lighters, a solar powered windup torch, a carabiner, a 3 inch nail, a set of headphones, a beanie, an old wooden pipe, a cigar in a tube, a spare battery for my cellphone, and a ball of garden twine. It's like a survivalist's jacket, I could probably last indefinitely in the bush like that. But actually, those are all there quite by chance, all except the pipe and the cigar have been used recently.

    <wrong head or wrong thread?>

I almost went and saw Dave when he played in a large cupboard in Chchch last week (or the week before, maybe), but it rained… last time I saw him may have been in Wellington in the ’80s, when passed through with The Chills (I think) – one of those tours done by relocating a campervan from Dunedin to Auckland, it already had a rubber duck super-glued to the bonnet by the time I was picked up for a floating poker game round the town…
