  • Sacha,

Completely off topic but fantastic work by Pundit on the energy efficiency part of the Greens' agreement with the Nats quietly imploding over the last few months. Key is no doubt relaxed in his slacks.

    Overview and Fitzsimons hereself.

  • Joe Wylie,

Wonder what Hone H brought back for his wider whanau?

    His Stories?

As it turns out, a million Hawaiian T-shirts.

Every time Goff takes a jab at Harawira, he shrinks. If he keeps it up, by the end of this week he'll have vanished.

Absolutely. A genuine scoop while everyone else was focused on the behaviour of attention-seekers.

  • Tom Semmens,

This morning on Morning Report Titewhai Harawira claimed that it was ironic that the whole email scandal occured on November 5th, the anniversary of the destruction of Te Whiti's Parihaka settlement. She claimed - on National Radio - that Colonial troops raped the women, cut of their breasts and turned them into tobacco pouches, and murdered their children and men.

Now, on the Maori News the historian Dick Scott (who wrote the 1975 book "Ask That Mountain: The Story of Parihaka" that made Te Whiti's story popular) said that there may have been some rapes, but her wild atrocity stories have no basis in fact.

So there you have it. What happened to Maori at Parihaka was a shameful incident in our countries history. A sane person would acknowledge that without need for embellishment.

Hone Harawira has been raised by a women who believes in wild "babies on bayonets" type fairy stories of atrocities, and leaves no opportunity untaken to brazenly spread her lies. No wonder he hate white people.

God knows how many minds she has poisoned over the years with her fanciful version of history.

    Tom:

Oy... looks like I timed my morning crap well to miss that, or I'd have had a fatal head-desk moment with the kitchen wall.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Titewhai also said on TV somewhere the other day that the big deal about the email was strange when they were english words made up by the white man. I was just amazed she knew what they were, being non white an'al'

  • Sacha,

Te Ao Harawira is indeed a different one. Not that I don't see the bigger argument or acknowledge the evidence of what my ancestors did to theirs.

  • Tom Semmens,

The report is availiable on the RNZ site - this morning's Waatea news (12 November 2009) at 8:48am is where I heard it, and the rebuttal from the now 84 year old Dick Scott.

We are fortunate that Mr. Scott was able to interview surviving participants and was able to present first hand accounts. The Wikipedia entry on Parihaka is also actually very good. None of the primary sources support Mrs Hawawira's version of events, which as I say were bad enough without having to invent atrocity stories.

Most of the walls are solid concrete block. It's my head and the furniture that's a bloody mess. :)

Titewhai also said on TV somewhere the other day that the big deal about the email was strange when they were english words made up by the white man.

Oh... so it's OK if I call Hone and Titewhai a pair of motherfuckers, as long as I do it in te reo? Don't think so, honey -- because last time I polled the extended whanau, the incest taboo is as strong among Maori as it with our colonialist oppressors.

  • BenWilson,

Place idiots in boat push away from shore, retreat rapidly, duck as required.......

Even better, put them in a canoe, and ask them whether it's a waka or a whaka.

  • Gareth Ward,

Titewhai also said on TV somewhere the other day that the big deal about the email was strange when they were english words made up by the white man.

Well if they'd been in Euskadi it probably wouldn't have made much of an impact.

Damn you people only taking offense at offensive statements because you can understand them

  • BenWilson,

Would this canoe better be called "Waka Aotearoa" or "Whaka Australia"? Tangaroa's decision is final.

  • Joe Wylie,

Maui's raising of the great fish, Te Ika-a-Maui, was said to have been achieved with a hook of phenomenal breaking strain, fashioned from the jawbone of his grandmother. For some reason I'm reminded of that story every time Titewhai mouths off.

  • BenWilson,

Maui's act of punching his own nose to provide the bait reminds me of Harawira. He is likely to land the entirety of NZ with it.

  • BenWilson,

If the Mikare Rauta/John Halliwell canoe (they decided to name each other in their own languages) had a sail, then it would lend new meaning to the old phrase "Buffeted by contrary winds".

  • Islander,

dubmugga - briefly, how your 'true story of Ngai Tahu' differs from the historical story. Which is well-known, and has been recorded in Maori and English by many people over the past 170 years.

Hint: Brailsford's version is in no way 'the true story of Ngai Tahu.' It's not 'the true story of the Waitaha tribes' either. It's rather badly written fiction.

  • Matthew Poole,

I'm quite disgusted at how little coverage the issue between the Greens and National is getting from the MSM. So far I see one, fairly light-weight article at Granny, and absolutely nothing at Stuff or either of the major TV news sites.

National currently has issues with 3/4 of its partners, and it's been a year since they got elected. H1 and H2 managed to keep things seemly until well into the second term, despite the media waiting beneath the tightrope with bared, dripping fangs. National can't make it 13 months but all we're being treated to is lots of coverage on issues of personalities and expenses and zero on issues of policy.

  • Yvonne Learmonth,

The trouble with these wildly exaggerated claims is that people believe them.

  • BenWilson,

Matthew, I thought it was a little bizarre too, when I read Granny this morning. But I'm not especially bugged - the truth will out. It may come as a surprise to the public, but that will just add to the fun. Amazing how fast an unassailable fortress of popularity can collapse.
