  • Islander,

Jackie, I ratrher suspect I would...but no snakes? Pity. I rather like snakes (o, & not just to eat, rotten whanau!)

Palms: my mother has one of her last few remaining first cousins living in Auckland: she's grown a dear wee thing called a ponytail palm
for many years at her home. About 15cm high? Near her cousin's home, she spotted a *driveway* lined with the fukkas - they were about 10foot tall-

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Ok, it's so fucking small it's embarrassing. They have not evolved. So slow, but too cute to kill. Now what do I do? We asked nicely for her (remember it's a cunt) to fuck off, but, higher form of life so, did I grow that Puka for that possum? I will do foreign. With all the natives around our house and my perseverence to save my next door oak that is now replaced with the floor for a bedroom ensuite, I want to respect that, the possum has won. Apoplectic? I think not, just trying to join in on the conversation. :)

    It's not their fault Sofie-

    a Timms trap
    or you know, 1080 carrots...
will do the - rather beautiful treecats who should never have been introduced into Aotearoa-into death.

  • Jackie Clark,

    No apoplectic landlord?

Well, there is a gentleman who hangs around sometimes, but he's more endearingly grumpy than apoplectic, really.

  • Rex Widerstrom,

    Sacha

Looking forward to meeting Sally Wenley who sounds like good value.

Sally is an incredible sort and could just as easily hold her own on the obscenity / swearing segment. One of many incidents I recall was wandering down Ghuznee St (I think it was) and having to interpose ourselves between her and the door of a curio shop, the window of which was displaying an intricately carved and painted wooden rooster.

Sally was desperate to wheel in and express her earnest desire for "that beautiful hard cock".

Then there was the confusion amongst the Police, who were quite happy to arrest myself and the other drunk and disorderly member of our triumverate, but weren't too sure how to deal with the young lady wheeling from one bin on Princes Wharf to the next, yakking in each one after a long night at Lenins...

But you didn't hear any of that from me ;-)

She also happens to be an astoundingly good journo, but that's entirely eclipsed by her entertainment value.

Incidentally, I've lost her contacts so if Russell or Sacha could contact me offline, or pass mine to her... much obliged.

  • Sacha,

Rex, I'll hand that one to Russell. I didn't get Sally's details but she was bloody good value on our panel. Probably offended her afterwards by casting aspersions on Hawkes Bay or the parts of it that produced Ann Tolley to be precise. Will keep the Lenin story between us two, eh.

  • Sacha,

Really enjoyed the filming yesterday, and if the opportunity presents on any other topics I'd be keen again. My first time on telly since about 11 so I found the behind the scenes stuff fascinating.

The folks that make Media7 are uniformly friendly, down to earth and interesting people. Had great conversations afterwards with both Exec Producers, and told them their support for the show as a platform for discussion means the world to people like me. Russell held in high regard all round, and I liked seeing him up close in that presenter role. Very professional and a great jacket to boot (on other threads I'd be demanding pictures). Random sighting afterwards in the bar of Nicky Watson for the first time as a reminder that we were in Auckland after all.

I hope our segment comes across OK - seemed to work well from what others told me afterwards. Complex topic to pack into a short time, but a good start I'd say. Russell used some of my words for his first lines - proud. Enjoyed an amiable chat with Curtis beforehand and I believe we established that there was more he could do as Associate Producer of Attitude. Offered my help with that. He did get ambushed a bit at the start of our segment but I reckon he handled it well. Watch for Sally showing why putting lively journos on a panel is a risk for any presenter.

As an audience member I found the swearing panel hilarious. Pam Corkery was a gem (and another example of the panel-journo maxim). Bill Hastings reminded me of Sam the Eagle at times - in a nice way - and delivered a great punchline. Not sure how many reaction shots you'll get in the final product. I have much faith in the editors after meeting one of them.

As someone without Freeview or Sky, I'll be awaiting the show's appearance online. I will also be taking up the Exec Producer's offer of a dvd copy so I can show my computer-free mum. Didn't get to talk with my brother much but great to have him in the audience where he is often to be found. I'll certainly be going along to some future filmings. Only a couple more at the Classic comedy club before things move to the TVNZ compound I'm told.

Thanks for report Sacha. I hear that Mike Gourley is also exploring disability and the media on his OneInFive programme on RadioNZ Sunday 7 pm.

Great show last night... I was looking forward to the swearing bit of the show (and it didnt disappoint). but your middle section was really interesting and good food for thought.

By which I meant to say... not just an amenable way to pass time, but actually better value than the the last section.

  • uroskin,

Watching Media 7 Friday morning trying to catch the swearing discussion (I didn't want to miss that unforgettable swear fest of Shameless on UKTV by watching Media 7 on the Thursday night) I was disappointed the item had been dropped from the repeat due to a fear of BSA reprisals.
It would have been delicious irony if the BSA took the chief censor to task over swearing on TV. If I were on the BSA I would laugh any complaint out of court.

Only from the daytime repeat. It just made things easier.

There's a link in today's post to the online version of the show, which has the cussin'.

Bill didn't utter the words. He explained later that if he did, the SPCS would be firing out press releases and it wouldn't be worth the bother.

How tedious to have those loons on your ass all the time.

Yeah, it really wasn't meant as an ambush, but it came off a bit that way. I thought he'd be more familiar with the kind of criticism raised by Philip Patston, and that it would be an interesting way in, but he wasn't. As you say, he handled it pretty well.

And you sir, might I say, were damn good.

I don't think so -- if Lars von Trier's Antichrist getting booked at the Film Fest (gender equity in explicit genital mutilation!) didn't bring out the SPCS, -- to my disappointment --, I don't think Bill having an attack of potty-mouth would do much. Where are they?

Aw, to be fair "reprisals" is a bit strong. While I've got my issues with the BSA (and the Censor's Office, come to that), they have to apply legislation and don't really have much room to make it up as they go along. On the whole, they do as good a job as they can.

And while I can't speak for Media 7, I've often "self-censored" the initial draft of my radio pieces (not just for broadcasting standard but potential defamation) and more often than not they've been better for it. You've got to pick your battles, in the end, if you want to be more than a crass shock jock.

  • Hilary Stace,

Great to have that section with Philip Patston on Media 7 last night. He's one of the most charismatic and astute thinkers in NZ disability. But hard to have a proper discussion on media and something as diverse as disability which affects 1 in 5 of the population, in 15 minutes. The panellists weren't even speaking the same language as each other. (Great to see Sacha though.)

Last I heard, they were all hands on deck stoking the S59 fire. Surely they wouldn't get worked up by Brüno either?

I'd probably get more "worked up" by Bruno, but even then I think I'll register my displeasure by pointing my eyeballs elsewhere. Just as, as I said in my PAR piece a few weeks back, Antichrist isn't on my Film Festival list either. I admire von Trier's technical skills, but shock jock misogyny doesn't become more interesting because its subtitled.

Well, a friend came by and we now have possum bait in the tree. Apparently they love this stuff and it's not attractive to birds so fingers crossed. He thinks the tree might survive so it's now a waiting game and I must say I don't mind considering he is a fisherman and we get fish so his visit was much appreciated. I've invited him back next week, sounds like we're getting squid.:)
