  • Robyn Gallagher,

    But where's the cute puppy

You'd never see a cute puppy story in the first few minutes of a news story today. They're usually stuck at the end along with the weather.

What stuck out the most for me was that Tom Bradley was obviously not reading from an autocue - his eyes kept flicking between the camera and his script on the desk. It was oddly distracting, but I'm sure back then it seemed normal.

  • Gareth Jenkins,

    But where's the cute puppy

It's also lacking a drum and bass intro. And the stories were so LONG!

On a similar note, here's the news in the future...

1985 news - so relaxed, in both pace and tone. Nice felt-tip graphic for the union meeting story.

  • Jeremy Andrew,

I was watching Not The Nine O'Clock News on DVD the other day, and I noticed how long the sketches seemed to be. No screaming rush to get to the punchline.
Attention spans were obviously longer in those days.

Doing a 90-min info dump for students at the School of Broadcasting. I come down every year, because it's a good course and it feels worthwhile.

  • Richie McGrath,

RIP Lee Hazlewood...One of the legends...I would listen to Nancy and Lee in tribute but Simon Smyth stole Fairytales and Fantasies...along with all 3 copies of the 'Fire of Love'...very sad...

But one thing was more formal then than it is now: all people mentioned in stories, whether verbally or in a name graphic, were given a title. So it's "Mr Ron Knox", whereas today it would just be "Ron Knox".

Thanks for the Green Wing vid, Andrew. I can't think of many telly programs that got me laughing out loud so much in recent years.

Only cost $13.33 too for some reason...

Anyway, I look forward to this on my way to work Monday morning. :)

  • Stephen Amplifier,

Sorry, Amplifier has been down for a few hours. It didn't recover properly from a restart yesterday but is now, thanks to some early morning intervention from Cactuslab, back up and running.

$13.33 is the price exc. GST. Anyone shopping from overseas and getting the goods delivered to overseas doesn't have to pay 12.5% GST. That goes for digital downloads and physical stuff like t-shirts, CDs and DVDs.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

This clip from 24 Hour Party People, where Tony Wilson meets God, has taken on a new meaning.

(Also note the deluge of comments made in the last 48 hours, including (of course, because it's YouTube) the obligatory "this sucks" remarks.)

Great clip. I have The way They Were, a compilation of Granada material from the punk and new wave years, which includes the full version of 'The Passenger', which you see a little of there. It's extraordinary and Iggy is sheer charisma.
