  • Hilary Stace,

Congratulations to all of us. Even more deserved as the judges for this award were Deborah Hill Cone and Bill Ralston - not known as fans of the lefty stuff which sometimes appears on this site.

A very positive evening, for old media and new … great to see that The Wireless has its moment in the sun. Paul Cavanagh, the former Radio New Zealand CEO who founded it, can take a bow.

I thought there were already awards for pundits? :)

  • Adrian Humm,

Congratulations Russell and all the Public Address team. I was on a Big OE from the UK in 1992 when I first heard Russell's understated rant on air. That was all it took for me to make NZ my home in 1993. That and the passionate way in which New Zealanders fought for social justice. Here we are 23 years later and I still come to Public Address for refuge from Godwin's Law. I'm glad you can still summon the energy Russell.

Well it was in many ways an adulter rant

  • Alfie,

From a reader who first enjoyed Hard News in email newsletter form back in the early 90s (?) it's been a pleasure to see your work mature into the nicely moderated blog PAS has become... many thanks Russell. The award is well deserved.

  • nzlemming,

Well done indeed, and even the fact that Bernard Orsman got one too doesn't diminish your (our? you're very kind) achievement. Long may it continue!

As one of those who've tried your patience, I think I've learned something too ;-)

  • Marion Ogier,

Congratulations. It is fantastic to have places like Public Address, The Spinoff and The Wireless to go to for quality work in this clickbaity media world. Also Matt Nippert is fantastic - like a gold nugget in the pile of shite that is the Herald these days. And finally Wallace Chapman - I happened on the John Kirwan interview and it was great.

"And yes, we won too. Public Address was named Best Blog Site. That’s the whole site, not just me: and that means all our bloggers, our developers CactusLab and you, the readers and commenters. Lord knows some of you try my patience at times, but I learn something from you every day."

I do not follow awards events and hence have just taken note of this. Congratulations to Russell and all others involved with this site.

On and off I have come here to read, and at times comment, trying to regain some sanity in the overly commercialised, often rather depressing present day mainstream media and some of the not always friendly blog-sphere.

This is encouraging and good news to hear.

  • Russell Brown,

I've just received the comments from Canons Best Blog Site judges Deborah Hill Cone and Bill Ralston:

With Public Address Russell Brown inspires hope the internet can be deep as well as fast. He should feel proud he has created a unique and meaningful community with a compelling voice that demands to be heard, not by shrieking loudly but by talking thoughtfully.

For an online entity, Public Address retains a surprisingly quirky and organic personality. Readers are left in no doubt this is an enterprise which is authentic and wholehearted, not dreamt up in a corporate focus group. The writing is classy but fierce, bringing clarity to topics as varied as racism, footpaths and eczema.

Public Address is a place to read something that means something.

    Awwww ...
