Hard News: UNGASS 2016: No one believes in your consensus any more

  • Ross Bell,

My sense is that Peter Dunne is well aware of the need to put "boldness" into action. But like any reform efforts they're likely to be evolutionary (although, as I said on the telly last night, never say never). Russell, I think you're one of the few commentators who has figured out that Minister Dunne is on a reform pathway... hopefully more people see the direction he's heading.

Another good speech. I like the fact that neither speaker stopped for the applause that was trying to get started. Some good points, but I look at Helen Kelly and wonder how much of it was just words.

Some of it is just at the moment. We'll see.

But there are things going on at MoH. I hear they're finally doing what should have been done before Helen made her application, and compiling a list of products they are actually in a position to approve under the non-pharmaceutical criteria.

I suspect the difficulty is and has always been that Peter Dunne is only one. He may truly want bold but it may only come if he can influence 60 other people in the House. I really hope he can because he does give us cause for hope. Maybe we could start a campaign to encourage him to be ( as he said at UNGASS,) bold.

This new UN Human Rights flier is a pretty strong rejection of the UNGASS outcome.
