  • Kumara Republic,

That they did might say something about their own pop careers. Does Moon really not have a reputation worth more than the few tens of thousands of dollars he’ll earn from contracting to a reality TV show? I suppose it’s all good fun until an outraged viewer assaults them in public. But however it got to air, it seems risky for Mediaworks to be presenting its two star judges as a pair of gibbering crackheads.

The high water mark would be the advertisers pulling their sponsorship, should the age-old formula of ‘no such thing as bad publicity’ miss the mark. It happened with Paul Holmes' Cheeky Darkie episode, and with a bit of prodding from the 'Tiso Option', Willie & JT during the Roastbusters controversy.

"First singer ever to wear a suit"? Some people have unbelievably short memories and narrow minds. Maybe that's what meth does to you.

It's a mischievous edit riffing on last night's controversy.

So, he's a one hit wonder? I wonder, will he get one hit from a member of public or will more than one do a whole Jesse Ryder on his ass. And as for the first to wear a suit...
the guy's a dick and so is she.

  • Rich of Observationz,

I saw the article and thought "who the fuck is Willy Moon" or indeed "Natilia Kills".

I'm kind of glad to be sufficiently disengaged from the dumbgeist not to know.

Anyway, will he? And does she?

Heh. This is pretty amazing. The original is 'Prisencolinensinainciusol' by Adriano Celentano and Claudia Mori:

  • Daphne Lawless,

I've never heard of any of the people involved until half an hour ago, but three points: (1) the "Norman Bates" line was the kind of thing that I would consider clever "snark" if I read it in an online review or blog comment rather than on live TV; (2) "crackheads"? "meth"? In my experience that IS how people who're not on addictive psychoactives actually behave... when they assume that the object of their wrath can't hear them. Which is why I wonder what the fuss is about; (3) The whole "how can you worry about this while people are being pushed out of towers in Iraq" thing is attention policing which only gives it more attention, like telling someone not to think of pink elephants.

Pleased to see from the reaction of others that I am not the only non-resident kiwi frantically checking through various sources to find out whether I am utterly out of touch not to know who these judges are...

  • Alex Coleman,

The cycle, or whatever, of 'engagement' rolls on now with Kills and Moon (but notably Kills esp) catching a stepped up level of, even more horrid, abuse on their social media accts, which is followed by the tutt tutting, and the 'what is wrong with people'.

I blame the parents. Or something.

  • Sacha,

Guess that's why they choose relative unknowns from another country, so the backlash doesn't matter to them. #nasty

  • BenWilson, in reply to Russell Brown,

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to mashup Willy's influences.

It was pretty strange, out of context. In the context of the silly show, some silly barely knowns aping Simon Cowell badly is to be expected, which is, I think, why Joe actually cracked up to it. He was running with it being a silly gag. When he didn't get upset they doubled down. I wonder if he was maybe primed somewhat for it - his Cleopatra comeback was barely audible, but right on the money. That look has been around for, like, two thousand years.

It wasn't the only unnecessarily mean comment they made - the one directed to the 40 year old woman who covered Wrecking Ball seemed unduly personal, calling her a cougar, desperate, over-rehearsed (?you're not meant to rehearse now?) etc. She was actually pretty good. As was Joe - it's a pity his actual performance is left out of the clips showing the controversy.

Tweet shows even their fellow judge Stan Walker was more than a bit unimpressed.

Is that for real? I got the impression from his face during it that he was pretty surprised and unimpressed. But is that his real twitter account?

  • Russell Brown,

The shit's hitting the fan a bit now:

McDonald's said this morning the comments made by Kills and Moon were unacceptable. "We have spoken to MediaWorks [the owners of TV3] regarding the incident involving Natalia Kills and Willy Moon, to make it clear that we believe the comments made were wholly unacceptable."

2 Degrees said it viewed the incident "very seriously".

  • william blake,

'Creative integrity'? Aren't all of these shows based on the people copying other singers? Do they ever have singer songwriters performing their own music? I don't think so and from what I have watched on the tube, the winners are quite average singers, not tone deaf and can carry a tune but have little charisma. They go on to have unspectacular careers and end up as judges on talent shows.

The next step is them racially abusing and then bashing their producer for not providing a hot meal after they've been to the pub for a few hours.

HAHAHAHAHA, I actually like some of Willy Moon's stuff, but his entire career is appropriation. This whole thing is so embarrassing. What a wanker.

I'm with Mr Moon here. Tony Wilson once asked Sid Vicious if he wrote for the man in the street. He replied "I've met the man in the street and he's a cunt."

  • Rich of Observationz,

This is a sort of parallel music business to the real one (where people make music, play gigs, create records and don't really expect to give up the day job), right?

Instead, you have a kind of lottery where the winner gets to become a celebrated generator of prolefeed and to elevate other winners in a recursive cycle.
