My one tip is that cyclepaths aren't always the best route. When I'm commuting, I go up the Ngauranga Gorge to Johnsonville (that's Wellington if you don't know). The pavement up the gorge is a de facto cyclepath – it isn't signed as such, but everyone uses it and I?

Then it's a dash up Albert St, Vincent St then Houpetown St to the office.?

On another subject, I have to say that I've been heartened by the rise of 'hybrid' bikes, the ones that have larger tyres but are still orientated to road/commuter use. With the proliferation of the personal car in the 1960s-1980s the bicycle industry started making bicycles to suit a form?

Lisa, considered hiring them casually? About $4 an hour (you return them to various spots when finished), gotta be a lot less hassle and potential cost than carting a bike on a plane. If you're staying in city or central suburbs there would probably be a spot within walking distance.?

I checked it out myself yesterday, and fully concur with Russell that the ride back up to Hillsborough is pretty hard, if you're getting there via the Isthmus Cycleway. Also note, you can get onto the cycleway?

George – how did you find the handling with a basket? I have panniers which are great because the centre of gravity stays low but are a pain to remove. I've been wondering if a basket would be a worthwhile substitute – but it's hard to know what a higher?

I can tell you that baskets definitely affect the handling when heavily loaded. But you get used to it, and ride accordingly. It's hard to describe the feeling, other than that you get 'steering delay', and need to use a lighter hand. Don't take sharp turns at speed. Also, note?

Lisa: my Ortlieb panniers have a very nice quick-release mechanism. As I lift them up from the rack they unlatch themselves. I think many other manufacturers have similar systems. So if you don't like your current panniers, it may pay to check out other ones rather than get a basket.
