  • NBH, in reply to Sacha,

I'm not sure Sacha - I'll check with my contacts and get back to you.

  • Steve Barnes, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Well, of course there’s bloody frustration –

Can't get a bloody Latte anywhere, it's tough being a journalist...

    getting coat now...

  • Sacha, in reply to Steve Barnes,

Eh? We were discussing the concentration of jobs.

  • Sacha, in reply to NBH,

Nothing urgent, just curious. Keen to help analyse the data but matching funding to enthusiasm is a persistent challenge.

  • David Hood, in reply to Matthew Poole,

The Herald article on rental demand from a month ago does seem to contradict the Feb figures that have come in for the period, which are described as "Flat"- Up 3% from a year ago, but down compared to January.

  • Sacha,

Some light relief. Cameron Slater described by the Herald as a National "party insider". This is the chump who wasn't even allowed inside the hall during their Botany candidate selection meeting. Still, I suppose he's a useful conduit for others to channel their shit through (see, managed a tenuous link).

  • NBH, in reply to Sacha,

Unfortunately it looks like they won't be Sacha, as they'd been operating on the basis that the more comprehensive post-Census Disability Survey would be available.

  • Sacha, in reply to NBH,

Ta for the update. That's a disappointing and probably ill-informed decision. It's a complementary data set, not a substitute. The Quality of Life survey is more frequently conducted and gathers more useful information about the whole of a person's life activities rather than a focus shaped by stereotypes about limitation and defect.

Statistics NZ have refused release of post-Census disability survey data at local authority sub-samples. Local bodies including DHBs lack even the most basic demographic data to act on despite their legislated responsiblities to all of their local populations. You'd think decision-makers might be concerned, but no.

*sigh* He's no more an insider than I am -- and given his rather squalid jihad against the party president I rather doubt anyone who is would touch him with the proverbial barge pole. To quote Mrs Mia Wallace, when boys get together they're worse than a sewing circle.

  • Matthew Poole, in reply to Emma Hart,

Auckland, which will be the prime destination for many of the IDPs from Christchurch

Wellington. At least for tech businesses anyway, 'prime' is Wellington. It's many Chch people's 'second city'.

Ahem. Wellington is probably not as attractive to refugees from the Christchurch earthquake as it once was.

  • Sacha,

Novel suggestion for funding rebuilding (h/t Lyndon Hood).

ALCP candidate in the Botany By-Election, Leo Biggs, is calling on the government to legalise cannabis to help fund the re-building of Christchurch, rather than cut Working for Families and interest-free student loans.

Enforcement of the cannabis laws currently costs the taxpayer half a billion dollars a year, with expenses spread between Police, Courts, Probation, Prisons and the Air Force.

    ...

“Cannabis commerce also offers a further $500 million annually in expected in revenue, making cannabis reform a billion dollar a year package,” he concluded.

That's kinda cool. Not really sure what it would be like to live in and needs more trees.

But that's suburbia which we are hoping doesn't need to be completely rebuilt. How about one of these in the CBD? It's a museum not a small sculpture!

  • Ross Mason,

Mathew Poole. Re suburb distribution of income. Could have a first stab using the decile level of the schools around the city (local rather than private).

    Useful, with caveat:

    Riccarton School, decile 2
    Riccarton High School, decile 7

They're on opposite sides of Main South Road.
