  • Chris Bowden,

Slightly off topic (fast food rather than food shopping) but the Glenfield Night Market on a Sunday is worth a look. I never thought a market in the carpark of a North Shore mall would be worth going to, but the number of ethnic food stalls is amazing, and there is a buzz about the place that reminds me of thai street food markets. Most things are around $5 too so you can pick and choose, and try a few things that you have never seen before.

  • Bart Janssen, in reply to Simon Pound,

Mt Eden Fisheries on Dominion Rd opposite the Glengarry's, just around the corner is a stealth good fish store.

And this is the problem I have had with fish shops. We've been there twice for fish and chips and both times been sold old fish in batter. Just because you are battering it and frying it doesn't mean you can use the fish that didn't sell for the last two days.

For fish shops what you need is consistency. I'll have to check on Sophie's recommendation in Mt Roskill since it is walking distance and the last time I went in there was several years ago.

Down at the waterfront is consistent though, just a bit of a pain to get to and from.

  • Gareth,

    Oamaru as food destination +1

The only farmer's market with steampunk on the side (http://campl.us/jAFv) and Fleur's cafe built-in. Plus: 12k out of town, the very excellent Riverstone Kitchen where we dined most royally (and affordably!) on Saturday night. And did I mention the Waitaki Valley wines?

  • Gareth,

ChCh butchers: Traiteur of Merivale. Great sausages.
Rachel Scott bread (best in NZ), available in Merivale Fresh Choice.
Canterbury Cheesemongers runs Rachel close, and has the best pork pies in the southern hemisphere. And cheese.

    Great

In Oamaru, we also have "One Smart Takeaway" - while specialising in blue cod & sole and other locally-caught species when available, they also make mean pizzas...we just go for the blue cod & chips . All fish is dipped in their special batter and fried while you wait.
They have already won best South Island takeaway-

  • Richard A,

I’m loving this foodie thread. Have been in South Australia for ten years after living in ChCh it's great that many familiar food outlets still exist in ChCh plus many more new ones. My in-laws swear by the St Martins/Opawa market (only 5 minutes from our old house – sigh!) and the Dunedin Farmers market has always been great when I’m down there visiting my folks.
Anyone coming to Adelaide must spend time in the Central Market – the best food market in Oz (don’t listen to Melburnians!) and the Willunga Farmers market is worth a visit on sat morning between tasting McLaren Vale wines.

    Sadly not walking distance.

If we are going to diverge into takeaways, I'll vote for Gorgeous pizzas on Dom Rd, expensive though. I'm still an al Volo fan but I actually think the pizzas benefit from reheating in a covered frying pan which suggests I prefer the bases a bit more done.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Not such a great food experience. We stayed in a Mt Albert motel on Saturday night and there was a heady smell of rancid fat hanging over the suburb--maybe even drifting towards Port Chev. Is this usual?

  • Hilary Stace,

Beautiful day at the Wellington City Market yesterday. Got some delicious hazelnut pesto from the indoor market at Chaffers next door. My friend Margot from Fantail Grove makes it, and she comes to Wellington once a month to sell it.

I don't really like Al Volo that much. Gorgeous Pizzas are....gorgeous.

I was disappointed the last time we got pizzas at Al Volo. They were underdone, very expensive and not that great. Won't be going back in a hurry.

The Chinese establishments in the Mt Albert shops don't tend to be a great advertisement for Chinese food. Could've been one of them.

Mainz market: Eggs from the organic chicken people, pancetta, pecorino , buffalo mozzarella and fresh ravioli from Semira, onions from the stand next to the tulip guy from the Netherlands, veges from the people across the Rhine, tomatoes and roses from the Thai girl-boy, radishes and carrots from the Pfalz people, bread (and a walnut mille feuille from the organic baker
Supermarket just over the border in France: poussins, lamb, fish, cheese and pate, baguettes, wine from the Loire....

I think that's our feeling as well. But the next day if you reheat them in a frying pan with a lid they come out pretty much spot on, but at that price that isn't what you want. I like some of their combos but on balance Gorgeous is better.

  • Sj, in reply to Mark Graham,

Reply to Mark Graham of four days ago and enviable neighbourhood food outlets, is there any chance you are the Mark Graham old friend of Southerly's back in University of Auckland library days? If so, I made a very fancy meal for you once; something involving almonds, if memory serves.
    Hope it is you.
Much less importantly, I am Sally, married to - the other Mark - also friend of Southerly's back in the day.

Meanwhile... hello JC. Good to read about your comings and goings. I see that you like yoghurt. It is the food of life, they say.
We're having a break from yoghurt just now. I think we spoilt ourselves on a serious Greek style yoghurt for months when it was on special, then it went up to the price it deserved, beyond our budget, and we found the cheaper comparisons hopelessly inadequate.
    The yoghurt conundrum.

We are lucky/unlucky enough to have a Mad Butcher at our corner shops. New World and MB. MB does good cheap mince as a leader product but the other meats can often be more expensive.

Fish night tonight then off to see our daughter perform in Westside Story at the Bruce Mason Centre. She had to peroxide her hair, apparently the hair never fully recovers.

  • Ian Dalziel,

    Pizza de resistance...
I had pretty much given up on pizzas (caught a snippet on Hell Pizzas on TV last night which reinforced all the reasons I'd never even tried going there - meathead lovers pizzas!) - but I digress...
The finest (thin base) pizzas in Chchch are to be found at The Mediterranean Food Company in Tuam St, opposite The Star (between Barbadoes and Fitzgerald) also purveyors of all fine packaged and Deli foods and wines from that region,. Give yourself a treat....
